Jackson's Paths-And-A-Creek Park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ All tees are flat, wide and long made of concrete.
+ The tee signs are sturdy, accurate, colorful and detailed.
+ The whole course takes place in a popular peaceful park.
+ Several devious water features in play.
+ The welcome area has a map and a lost disc box, but...

Cons:

- ...No practice basket that I could see. Did I walk right past it and not notice?
- Much of the course is pretty open to the point that it often feels like playing on a bolf course.
- The fairways themselves are repetitive with very few stand-out challenges to manage. Plus, the course doubles back on itself, so you are literally playing a good chunk of this course in reverse.

Other Thoughts:

Jackson Park really is popular with the surrounding community. During your round, you are guaranteed to see dog-walkers, cyclists, joggers and maybe even some kids enjoying the creek on a hot summer's day. There are walking paths all over the place, so you can expect to wait for a bit before throwing. This is one of my complaints with Jackson Park. The fairways regularly involve the park's paths.

I would have loved hole5 if it weren't for the walking path. I was so nervous before teeing off because my view of the path was blocked by a wall of trees and shrubs on the right. A poorly-timed jogger or bicyclist is all it takes. If the path weren't there, hole5 would be a fun challenge dealing with a branch of the creek on both sides and increasing tree cover. But the paths were obviously here first and the course installed afterwards.

And my least favorite hole was right after it. Hole6 starts in the woods. It has you take a functionally blind tee-off over a creek. There is a small window to poke through that leads directly over a walking path. The rest of the fairway is wide open and finishes near that same path and a residential road just a few yards beyond it.

A few holes get uncomfortably close to private property, too. Holes8 and 10 are close enough to homes that a nasty gust of wind could spell trouble. And basket7 gets so close to someone's backyard that I felt like I was trespassing.

But how does the course at Jackson Park actually play?
If I'm honest, it's kind of plain. Most of these fairways play flat and wide open with a peppering of trees. Thankfully, there is an OB creek nearby on a good number of these holes to add a dimension of tension to your throws. Seriously, if the creek weren't there, this course would be unremarkable. The course planners clearly understood this. Hole1 introduces players to that right away with an angled throw over the water. Hole18 is my favorite hole here because it incorporates that creek but also has a noticeable amount of elevation, which sets it apart from the rest of the course. In the interest of fairness, I should mention that there was construction going on during my round in early June 2023. Holes11 and 12 were shortened and modified to maintain the circuit. I get the feeling I was missing out by not playing them fully.

I would recommend this course to distance players who prefer to let their throws glide. There aren't many trees in the way, but the creek kind of makes up for that. It really is a formidable feature always lurking just off to the side and daring you to get close. If you do play here, do yourself a favor and play the four longer baskets on holes1, 5, 17 and 18. That feels like the authentic full experience to my mind. Bring your disc retriever for the water and maybe a doggie treat for any loose Fidos running around.

P.S. Keep an eye out for the many boysenberry trees all over the course. Remember: only pick the black ones. Delicious!

Pros:

Excellent teepads - long-n-wide, raised, pad on crush/gravel.

New baskets in a pretty park near food/petrol options.

Cons:

While the teesign abutting the back of the teepad may bother those with longer run-ups (not me), it was actually the small post at each front corner of the teepad that disturbed me, i.e. will I catch it with my foot on my follow-through?

The single crossing point causes one to retrace one's steps after teeing off on #1.

Other Thoughts:

If you're an aquaphobe or an arborist, avoid this course, as what it lacks in trees it makes up for in water (a creek thickly-lined by grasses and weeds, or a murky canal). Water may come into play on ~2/3rds of the holes, while trees are intentionally involved on holes 6/17, as you must throw through narrow windows early.

So, the course is primarily open, and fairly flat, with some elevation in the far corners. The water simply parallels the fairways on ~1/3rd of the holes, so avoiding too much turn/fade is the challenge, while on another 1/3rd, the water needs to be crossed, typically early, but late a couple of time. Number-5 probably has the most challenging basket location, with the creek along the length of the right-side, and the canal behind and left of the basket.

There are a few open holes, more so on the back nine, which will let you air-out yoru favourite distance driver, but with half the holes sub-300', there are birdy opportunities.

Oh, and to show the Universe requires balance, my playing partner aced #5 :) - after which I threw my disc into the water/weeds behind the hole, not to be found. :-(

A fun, pretty, open course, with an omnipresent water-hazard - play as your course-preferences motivates you.

Pros:

Well maintained course. Fly pads were some of the better ones I have played on. Easy to follow the course as you can see the whole park.

Cons:

Course is for begginers or for someone trying to work on the up shots. Pins are easily reachable on the drives. Could use a couple of foot bridges to cross the creek more easly.
