Lose Discs Much???? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course offers up diverse challenges with creeks trees ponds and thick vegetation makes for interesting rounds

Cons:

If you hit the thick brush just say goodbye to that disc unless you have waiters and a machete.

Other Thoughts:

I am new to this sport and learned about the shoes on the electric wires if you ace or just wear your designated DG shoes out they are retired by hanging for all to see!!!!!

Great variety, no tee pads 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 5, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great variety of shots incorporating elevation, trees, and water
- No two holes alike, each one has unique challenges
- Nice layout and flow

Cons:

- No tee pads, and even worse, some used to be crushed gravel, but are so bad that they're worse than just flat dirt because of all the pot holes
- Not much signage, holes can be difficult to locate for first timers

Other Thoughts:

With decent concrete tee pads, this would easily be a 4.5, but the inconsistent footing really detracts from what would otherwise be a great course.

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Okay course. A lot of OB and Water to watch out for. Not recommended for the beginner player. Friendly locals. Had a gentalman walk half the course with my group that was very helpful and knowledgable. Can't remember his name but a red headed college student that once went to Levelland, Tx. SPC for school. I wanted to thank him for helping out and walking us through the course.

Cons:

Railroad, Apartments, Roadway, and public walking access. The peds must not see much playing time from golfers and don't realize the way the course plays (Watch out for them). Dirt tees and without the help we received wouldn't have found the next holes on some.

Other Thoughts:

Would play again if the course was updated to concrete tees and marked better. Lost a disc in the pond (Discraft Surge with Hancock on it) If willing please contact for return. Thanks

Going "Jimmy"!!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 16, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has seen two renovations, a major change to the layout of the entire course in 2009, and now TEE PADS in 2013! Jimmy Porter is an addictive course that demands improvement to keep getting a good score. I play this course regularly and love it! The new layout makes every shot more important because every hole has water or sidewalk OB. When this course is in the ideal conditions, it's a solid 4.0. That is probably why it has hosted the Carrollton Open numerous times, along with the Greenbelt course up the street. "The Jimmy" is nearly always in use because it is a fun time for all.

Pins are placed so that a good shot is rewarded, and a bad one is OB. Most of the baskets have nearby trees. Holes 2 and 6 are elevated straight shots. All holes except 1, 4, 11, 13, 14, have water hazards, but the water is not deep enough to lose a disc, and no problem if you can throw past 75ft on Hole 9. Hole 14 is a 455ft opportunity to bomb your disc!

Porter is an attractive, clean course that is extremely fun for any skill level. It requires different types of drives to get a birdie. There is a practice basket near the parking lot and none of the course overlaps like it did in the past, plenty of room to play. There are ways to cross the creek if you happen to throw to the other side, which happens a lot. Completely new layout to a classic course makes you want to play again and again!

*There is a teepad for HOLE 19 that throws to the practice basket. After hole 18 walk directly toward the parking lot driveway and you will see a slab of concrete, it is a teepad to throw at the practice basket. Just make sure to yell before throwing, to not hit someone practicing. It is used in minis at this course as hole 19.

Cons:

There is a Railway track that runs very close to the park entrance and along side Hole 1. The train horn is very loud and can be heard throughout the park, which can very easily throw off putts. Hole number 1 also has power lines right in front of the tee, slightly out of the way of drives but it is just not very appealing.

(There is now tee pads and a course map at hole 1 updated 2013, THANK YOU Boys Scouts of America).

Pedestrians walk through the trail all the time, which runs in between a majority of the course, but is not too intrusive. Creek at hole 6 is grotesque, very muddy and covered with tall stalk like plants, but when maintained is okay. When people say this course is a "disc eater," their discs are probably in the creek along holes 6 and 7, throw with caution. There is a fence that is a pain if you go over on 10, it is very often a swamp on the other side of the fence. Enough complaints to not be rated a bad ass course, just a very good one.

The baskets are very old and make putting difficult. They are old, Mach 2's I believe. Putts can cut through, and you can hit the center of the chains and spit out as well. The wind is definitely a factor on this course and again makes putting that much more of a challenge to your game. The baskets are POS, but an advanced player will play well at this course!

I am biased but I love this course!!! I stand by my rating of the course because of the additions. But the truth is, this course needs new baskets to be a true 4 out of 5. It is really closer to a 3.75 and I'm being generous because I play there often.

Other Thoughts:

There are loyal, very cool people that go to this course, as well as some very talented players. The city is constantly working on this place, to maintain the creek and the water levels on this course. They are improving the look and condition of the course, which is always good for the player.

There is only one parking lot that is on the east side of Josey south of Keller Springs near the train tracks, don't miss it. You can't get in on the other side of the course.

Josey road runs near hole 14, the bomb hole, but as long as you don't suck you can avoid it. When I first started playing and did suck, I only ended up in the street once or twice. Also there are apartments near 3 and 4 that are the same.

Still one of my favorites 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Excellent use of the terrain available.
- Water obstacles come into play on multiple holes to provide challenge.
- Good mix of hole variety and length.
- Great local disc golf community and one of the best courses to meet new players.
- Plenty of parking available.
- Very little interference with non disc golfers except a few walkers.
- The city recently cleaned up the brush from the waterways, which made finding discs easier and seemed to push the snakes out some.

Cons:

- Teepads are simply terrible.
- No signs anywhere and a few teepads can be difficult to find if you don't know the course.
- Flooding can be an issue after heavy rain.
- Maintenance is a little sketchy at times and if they miss a mowing rotation, they simply wait until the next scheduled day.
- Baskets are of random quality and make. Some are decent, others are pretty bad.

Other Thoughts:

This remains one of my favorite courses to play. It is not the best maintained or even designed course, but it's just fun. I have met so many friendly disc golf players here. I highly recommend finding a local and giving Porter a try. Do note however that water can be a serious issue here, especially if you don't have your drives under control. The weeds on hole 6 can be very unforgiving on a high or underpowered release.

Decent If Maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Requires a good variety of shots to finish course under par. (Based on all holes being Par 3s)

2. Not that hard to figure out where the next holes are located. It basically follows a general path around the whole park.

3. Makes good use of creek that runs through it. The creek comes into play on the majority of the holes.

Cons:

1. Is not maintained very well (or should I say often enough). Grass can be very high and almost unplayable in some areas.

2. Signs and launch pads show some age.

3. Some of the baskets are very old and are not even close to regulation height. (Almost feel like you need be on your knees to put).

Other Thoughts:

I have made it almost a quest to play all the 18+ basket courses in the DFW area. Since I just played this one today, I thought I would review this one first. Note: Recently they have replaced the missing basket on the course and the park is mowed, so today it was very playable.

Awesome Pin Locations 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

JP is a nice open fairway course for the most part. But the pin locations on many holes make it more challenging than an other open fairway course I have ever player. Most of the time long drives on an open course can have you playing under par, but you better have an accurate long game as well as a decent short game if you wanna play under par out here.

Cons:

One basket has been stolen, it will be back eventually, no biggie. It is in a greenbelt/floodplain, so don't venture out here after a good rain. Just common sense.

Having a guide out there would be nice if you are going for your first time, but its not impossible. Some pins are hidden so expect to do some exploring.

Other Thoughts:

This course is not in the best condition but it's layout is very fun to play. Layout trumps condition, this course is a 4.

Close to home 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a very large and wide open course. This being one of the first courses I ever played, I found this to be great so I wouldn't have to worry about hitting anyone.

The course design is excellent Imo. You will do lots of walking from tee to tee, but never are you crossing through someone else's path. Once you get to around the 4-6th hole the course really begins to open up as you get away from the parking lot. From here on the course just follows a large curve around the entire park.

Cons:

My biggest complaint with this course is the lack of any decent tee boxes. If I remember correctly, the first 2-3 holes have cement boxes, but after that you're on your own. The dirt boxes are very uneven and if you are not careful you can easily roll your ankle. I typically tee off slightly to the side of the box to avoid this.

Another concern, at least for relatively new players like myself, is the constant threat of losing a disc. I have not lost any on this course, but have driven home soaked from head to toe and covered in mud. The large pond near the end isn't that deep. If you are still new and are not sure you can throw it over the creek/pond/15 feet grass, you may want to just play around to be on the safe side.

While the course layout is great, some signage would be greatly appreciated. My first time playing here my friend and I had to be pointed in the right direction several times as it doesn't always flow the way it looks like it should.

Other Thoughts:

This has become one of my regularly played courses, simply due to my living 5 minutes from it.

I do have my qualms with the course, but I keep coming back. It's challenging, long and worth the time to play a full 18.

P.S.
If you land your disc in the pond near the mid teens, just empty your pockets, lose your shoes, and jump in! It's not too deep(2-3 feet max) A lot of players simply don't even try to get their discs out and you can usually find a few free discs if you wade through the mud.

I genuinely don't understand the 3 star rating people have given this... I recognize there are different strokes for different folks, but come ON ya'll, this is not a good course as it is.

Fun to play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice layout. Some hidden baskets, plenty of water hazards, easy to follow and improving each time I play there.

Both right and left doglegs come into play. No "cookie cutter" holes zigzagging across a field... each one has its own character and will get better with time (as trees grow and improvements are made).

No really long holes to sap the life out of noodle arms like mine. A good "course management" experience for players that aren't able to bomb the basket from the tee. Not too hard, but tight enough to make you pay if you're throwing wild. Some good birdie opportunities for the average player.

Good balance between easy and difficult. A fun course for the intermediate player... like me.

Parking lot is nice and used for disc golfers only...

Cons:

The new tee boxes (elevated dirt surrounded by rail road ties) are better than ruts on the ground, but not by much. At least they drain enough to get dry (with the exception of #11). #14 tee is not elevated (just a rut in the ground) and is a pool of water for days after a good rain. With the drainage problems on this course, concrete tees are needed.

Drainage is a problem for all but the driest of times on holes 11 and 13. It's difficult to navigate the fairways without getting your feet wet in the fall, winter and spring. The Texas sun will take care it in the summer.

Basket areas on 3, 8 and 10 have drainage problems that are badly in need of attention... and there is often standing water too close to baskets 11 and 14.

Signs would be nice for those that haven't played the course before. Mostly on 4, 7, 8 and 9... where you can't see the basket from the tees.

No restroom.

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course. I don't want this review to look like the course wouldn't be fun, because it is fun. The city (and the wonderful people that help on their own) is really working hard to improve this park... and there are more improvements on the way. The course is fun to play as it gets better, just know it's not finished yet.

When I'm in the neighborhood, I definitely stop by for a nice round.

Cons:

Pros:

Good use of what was given. Sidewalks and across are OB which add to the challenge of the course.

Pond comes into play on #12 and maybe 11
Sidewalks and across come into play on #2,3,4,5,6,7,8,12, and maybe 14 if you over throw it.

Park boundaries come into play on #1 (railroad tracks) #4 (Apartment complex) #11 (Fence Line) #13 (Tree line behind the basket usually marked with a string) #14 (Street) #17 and maybe 18 (the Parking lot)

Basically, if you play a round without an OB, you played a good round.

Hole #12 has a short and long tee marked. The long tee is the signature hole in my opinion.

Cons:

Pros:

I liked the course quite a bit...

Recently redone and reopened after that had cleared a lot of brush out, planted new trees, lined creek w rocks and built a couple bridges.

The course was pretty well designed for the small amount of space used and occasionally different elevations added to the course as well.

Most memorable holes - 4, 6, 7, 9, 12, and 17.

Final was three over par, counting all as par threes besides hole 16.

Cons:

Baskets are pretty old and there was prob three different putts where I rocked the chains with a solid putt and my putter just popped out because of a lack of grip. Chains on a few baskets had also lost form / shape and left less of an area where you could sink a putt.

Other Thoughts:

Good course... replace the chains on a few baskets and it'd bump it to four stars. New trees once grown in will make it pretty challening.

Reborn, Refreshed, Revived 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a some good elevation, protected/hidden pins, decent hole lengths, accuracy shots, OB's, water, and some real picturesque holes. I played this course as it is still under development. But when the cement tee pads and new signs get put in place, this is sure to be a fun course to play. The shots from up high were great. I loved the few protected pins and felt this course layout was pretty good.

Cons:

There is a few extended walks between some on the holes. A map or guide is not necessary, but it sure helps. A few of the latter holes will be much more challenging as the trees grow. There is few tee signs and the tee pads are presently dirt, but give it a little time, I am sure that will be rectified soon!

Other Thoughts:

The par 3 settings are not bad for holes of these lengths. The fun factor was pretty good for this course. Some of the holes were so much fun, it made you want to throw multiple drives. As we all know that is a pretty good sign of a fun hole. I wish there was a bit more variance in hole length, but out side of that, this was a fun course.

Same Name, Different Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

**NOTE....although the baskets are in, the course still has A LONG ways to go...as of right now i feel it its rated a 3/5, but dont make this a reason you dont come out because this course has A LOT of potential, and eventually, this course should, i say should be at least a 4...

I felt like the fun factor here was great, Porter really keeps you on the tips of your toes, with SEVERAL ace runs, lots of birdie holes, and the constant battle of staying away from the creek. bring your swim trunks or an extra disc, because nearly the whole course is next to a decent size creek, with several spots where you WILL not want to go in...some holes it really keeps you honest.

Theres a lot of open holes with the creek and sidewalk lining the fairways making several risk/reward shots....i suggest playing sidewalk and beyond o.b...it really makes this course tough otherwise its fairly easy because its soo open. A lot of the front 9 have defined faiways that are mostly open with mainly shorter holes, the back 9 is open as well, with a couple longer holes. All the baskets are pretty old, some need some work , all dirt tee-pads, several need fill dirt), the flow is good for the most part, parking is adequate, and the park itself is really starting to shape up.

Cons:

Like i said, this park is still under-construction, theres several things that need some work but im sure most will be fixed in time. To start off, several of the tee-pads need some work, a couple i didnt even want to throw off of. A couple of the baskets need some work. Several holes are hidden in a thicket with no sight of the basket from the tee, pretty TOUGH TO NAVIGATE if your by yourself. No restroom, NO SIGNS(not sure if theyre putting any up)

**NAVIGATION TIP**The Biggest problem i had with this course is the walk from 8's box to the pin and 9's box to the pin...ill give everyone a tip, when after throwing on hole 8(the pin is at the back left of the brush, just throw towards the small ditch) you have to walk across the bridge, finish out the hole. After completing 8 you walk directly to your right(back towards the sidewalk) you will see a bench with two orange flags in the ground(basket is straight away) then after throwing your drive you have to walk back across the bridge you just crossed...imo this is the stupidest layout mistake i have seen in a while, i dont understand why they decided to do this.

Other Thoughts:

like i said this course still needs a lot of work, but i still suggest you play this course, its a fun course, its fairly easy, and i believe it will only get better in time.

**NO SHADE what-so-ever...be sure and bring some water with you, because its gonna get hot

Pros:

*Front 9 makes good use of elevation
* Course plays tougher than the old layout and is a bit more fun
*Course has a decent mix of holes that are ideal for righties and lefties

Cons:

*No Concrete tees. Many of the dirt tees are on un-level ground...be careful, or roll your ankle
*Many of the pin placements are tucked in a group of trees, which means there is virtually no green, either park it and take your 2 or lay-up because there is no lane for a putt.
*There are no holes that make you say "wow"
*Not much shade
*There are too many throwaway holes to make this course a premier course.

Other Thoughts:

This new layout was just put in the ground about 24 hours before we played it so there is still lots of work to be done clearing fairways and greens. This course will play several strokes tougher for the next generation of golfers because there are a couple dozen of young trees that have been planted that will eventually come into play. Course is fun to play, but is certainly not a "must-play" for out-of-towners.

This aint your mommas old Jimmy Porter 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun course that challenges old Porter for the crown. I like this layout more then the other one because of the fairways. This course doesnt really favor a certain player and I think that it is more lefty friendly then most courses. The front 9 has "fairways" on every hole except for hole 1. The fairways have the sidewalk on one side and the creek on the other making for some interesting shots when playing sidewalk and everything OB. The risk vs reward can be fun to because of the rough can get rough in places. A couple of holes, 7/9/10 are planted in spots where you have one option to get to it and if you dont it could hurt your score. I think that there are alot of birdies out here for a pro/adv player which makes it fun but you can also shoot high if you throw off line a couple of time. The back is pretty open and doesnt challenge you too much because of it. I think the birds are more plentiful on the back but they are everywhere if you look.

Cons:

Not much shade therefore it can get hot very fast! The pond is nasty, just like it used to be. There could be more trees to change a couple of shots up. The rough can get rough in spots. Easy to lose plastic in the creek and even when mowed there will be spots that your disc will vanish before your eyes. There are a couple of tees/holes that are hard to find first time out, but once you find them its not a problem. Parking can get interesting as the lot is pretty small.

Other Thoughts:

This course I compared to LL Woods in Lewisville because with sidewalk and beyond it plays alot like it. When this course gets mowed and cleaned up a bit, it will be fun and will blow Greenbelt out of the water. Bring lots of drinks cause it gets hot and its a long way back to the parking lot.

Open hyzer course, mostly water hazards 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course has a few fun holes. #2 from the hill down across the water is memorable and a great hole to bomb some drives off of. #13 is a sweet challenge shot with a tight fairway and the pond OB on the left and the stream OB to the right; it's dueceable with a great drive, but I've taken a lot more 4s than 2s on it. #5 and #17 used to be great holes, but the stream erosion and park revamping took down most of the trees that made them great... so while the park is getting cleaner and improving drainage, the holes are losing some of their challenge.

Decent mix of short and medium length holes. A few trees, but most of the hazards of water OBs, many of which are very hard to find a disc in.

Biggest pluses for Jimmy Porter in my book are the great tournament Bryan James (PizzaGod) runs every year, The Carrollton Open, which is a incredibly well-run event; and the fact that the relatively open course in good area of town make this an ideal place to play night golf. The discs are a lot easier to find in the water at night, because you can see the glowstick LEDs in the water, and so you're not likely to lose discs. The relatively open layout also provides lots of ambient light (from light pollution as well as from moon/stars) that make it pretty easy to see the baskets. So once they reopen the course, hit a night round out there and see the course at its best.

Cons:

Teepads are a very mixed bag, with some being downright awful. They have worked to improve this the last few years with concrete pads, but the effort isn't complete yet. Streams and pond OB will likely eat a disc or two (or three or four) and can be somewhat frustrating during the round. The holes don't require too much precision or shot variety -- a big RHBH hyzer is the best shot on most holes and the upshots almost never force precision. Except for the water OB, there are very few obstacles and virtually zero rough to speak of. As long as you avoid the water you can take an easy 3 on every hole except for #16, which is ~500' with some trees guarding the basket, but it's the only par four on the course.

Jimmy Porter won't hone your game much -- you'll get a little wind practice and a little placement practice because of the water -- but none of that requires great precision or strategy. You basically backhand a fairway driver and can your putt. My best score there is a 45 (-9) shot during night golf with two discs -- a Teebird and a Rhyno.

Other Thoughts:

For several years, Jimmy Porter was my home course. It is a great place to get in some throws, to try new discs, to bomb some open shots, to meet some fun local players... but overall, not well kept not enough shot variation to be worth the trip unless you are a local.

The course is currently under renovation by the parks department. I don't think this will change the layout of the course much, but will make the streams nicer and add some aesthetics to the course. This should also make it easier to find discs.

Anecdotally, be careful in the pond. A friend and I lost all our leg hair one fall round when were in there searching for his KC Banshee. The paint factory up on the hill above the corse had had a spill and didn't post any signage around the pond or stream. We got the EPA out to test the waters and they deemed that we would be okay, but it's made me wary ever since. Scary, scary, thing to look down and realize that your leg hair is all gone from just above the knees on down. I'm eternally grateful that the water was pretty shallow that time, and I didn't go teabaggin' that day. Just a word of warning before you go swimming for your discs.
