Jimmy Porter

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Land is really good for disc golf. You've got a 20-25 foot wide creek that is in play a lot – both throwing over and having baskets placed near the water -- and you've got one water carry over a pond; several holes have more than 20-30 feet in elevation changes. This isn't a heavily wooded course, but the trees are well used.
- Two practice baskets.
- Innova baskets.
- Lost disc box; discs go to the Dynamic Discs store a few blocks away, and they call/text you.
- Tee signs are old but informative. They have hole number, distance and a map. The have a next tee indicator. In some instances, the distance to an alternate pin location has been added with stick-on numbers. They also have very clear descriptions of the OB. Oddly, the signs do not list the par.
- Best holes:
2: 307 feet open and downhill with 290 feet needed to clear the creek. Your landing zone is about 25 feet, from the edge of the creek to a sidewalk that is OB and beyond. The first 15 feet after you cross the creek slopes back down to the water, so some shots that clear end up trickling backward into the creek. A big tree sits slightly back/right of the basket.
5: 235 feet through a 25-foot wide gap in trees about halfway. Trees/limbs block any real chance for a big hyzer. The direct path takes you over the edge of the creek, and the basket sits in a stand of about 10 trees.
6: 275 feet straight ahead through a very narrow window or a big RHBH hyzer blind over a walking path and a bridge. You've also got OB sidewalk and beyond.
8: 344/382 feet with a slight RHBH hyzer. Basket is perhaps 10 feet higher in elevation. You've got a 10-12 foot wide fairway in order to avoid weeds chest high or taller on the right that start 15 feet in front of the tee. Left, you've got weeds 8 feet high along the edge of the creek. The fairway opens up about 75 feet off the tee, but the direct line takes you over the creek. The basket is in a stand of trees, requiring a low approach for the final 40 feet.
12: 236/325 feet (although I've never seen the basket in the long position) over the pond with a gentle RHBH hyzer. The water carry is about 200 feet. A tree on the left edge of the pond could easily knock a shot into the water. Another tree 15 feet in front of the tee blocks the RHFH path around the water.
15: 265 feet straight over the creek. The direct line takes about 180 feet to clear the creek. You've got a handful of trees on the far bank of the creek, and the basket sits on the edge of ground that slopes down to the water behind the basket.
16: 208 feet RHFH with the creek 10 feet right of the basket. Trees block the RHBH path.
18: 226 feet RHBH big hyzer around a big tree, out over the creek and fading back to a blind basket. A RHFH path is available, but you've got trees to contend with.

Cons:

- No potable water.
- No map on site.
- No restrooms.
- The walking path comes into play a lot; some of those are blind throws, so there is some danger. At a minimum, you will likely end up waiting on walkers/runners/cyclists.
- Long walk twice related to hole 10. Unless you walk through the creek (it's possible when the water is low), you have to follow the walking path on your right, cross a bridge and cut left along the edge of the creek for about 200 feet to get to the basket. To get to 11, backtrack to the walking path, turn left and walk another 100 or so feet.

Other Thoughts:

- Two bulletin boards at Hole 1 have seen better days. Not only are they blank, they look as if they are about to fall over.
- No. 9 is probably the biggest difference I've seen for two pin positions on the same hole. They start on the same line over 6-8 foot high weeds and the creek. The short position is 255 feet, RHFH with the basket tucked into a stand of trees. The long position is 552 feet. The final 300 feet is mostly open and uphill.
- I've probably played the course more than 100 times; I've had discs in the water on 13 of the 18 holes.
- The water carry pond on No. 12 was bone dry July 31, 2023. I have seen it with no water a couple of other times, but those times you would sink ankle deep in mud trying to walk across it. Not this time.

Beware of water 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 6, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Beautiful park
-Trees around baskets provide for unique and challenging up shots
-Great for intermediate players

Cons:

-Beginners will lose a lot of plastic
-Short teeboxes
-Not much variability off of the tee

Other Thoughts:

Difficulty (3/5): This course has slightly above average difficulty, especially for beginners, because of the water. When I first played this course I was incredibly new to the game, and was stressed out on almost every shot because of the threat of losing my discs in water. This caused me to play overly safe and add a ton of strokes to my score. When I played again more recently, I was much more confident in each shot I would be taking and was willing to take my normal lines as if the water wasn't there. I still found my fair share of trees and shallow water a couple of times, but having a little more experience under my belt made the course far more manageable.

Maintenance (3/5): The baskets were in great shape. The teeboxes were in good shape but often a little shorter than I would have preferred. Grass and brush were trimmed low. Tee signs were extremely faded.

Variability (3/5): The majority of obstacles on this course are from the water. There are definitely trees, but for the most part they're on the edge of fairways and therefore don't force different lines but rather punish you if you don't throw straight. That, combined with my noodle arm (I can't throw more than 300' consistently), meant that on at least half of the holes I was driving as hard as I could straight down the middle. An additional 4 or 5 holes were straight down the middle but within my driving range, so I needed to focus more on accuracy. A couple of holes used the water very well to make you question whether you wanted to go for it or layup. All of that being said, there was usually clusters of trees around the basket that made approach shots interesting. The tee shots were less varied than most courses, but the approach shots were more varied than most courses.

Flow/Experience (4/5): Going from 9-10 and 10-11 can be a bit confusing the first time, but not much. The hole layout really makes sense even for a first time player. This was a really stressful course to play as a beginner, as I mentioned before, but much more enjoyable as an intermediate. I imagine it'll be even better with more skill. A lot of pretty views and fairly secluded disc golf.

Technical if windy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Very technical course
-A few wide open holes to see how far you can throw
-Well thought out lay-up areas for those of us not blessed with huge arms
-Water hazards that aren't too daunting to get your discs out of except the pond
-A few elevation changes to keep things interesting in the beginning of the round especially
-Well marked hole locations for each hole with approximate distances
-Benches at the tee pad for most holes

Cons:

-Make sure you have some overstable discs in your bag or you will go swimming a lot, especially if it's a windy day
-While the basket locations are marked on the signs, some of the locations of the holes change depending on the season, so it can take some scouting
-On the weekends, the park can get a little busy so be careful blind throwing
-Some of the tee pads are a little uneven, and the pad at hole 6 is almost treacherous
-If you throw your disc in the very small pond on 12, good luck getting it out thanks to zero visibility
-Don't be fooled by any rock bridges you see, they are cosmetic and the rocks will move

Other Thoughts:

-There are no bathrooms on the course at all. The closest is at the softball complex across the street

Water water everywhere 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Nice easy to navigate layout
-Teepads in good shape
-Nice variety of holes
-Water in play on almost every hole
-Very distinct holes
-Flow from hole to hole is excellent, nice rapid pace of play

Cons:

-The fairways are fairly open, with most of the "wooded" description coming in from guardian tree placement around the pins
-Some of the rough, especially on holes 5,6,8,10 is pretty dense.
-Water in play on almost every hole, most of the creek is shallow but there are definitely some deep spots that require more than just removing your shoes to retrieve your disc. And then you have the pond on 12.
-Walking path weaves through the course and there are some near blind shots on 4 and 6 where you have a chance of hitting somebody
-Hole 14 tees of right next to a busy road and I cold see a lefty grip locking a drive and causing a big problem.

Other Thoughts:

Jimmy Porter is an excellent example of a municipal multi-use park course. The design incorporates a wide variety of shots and approaches and uses a single creek to introduce OB and risk reward type shots on a number of holes.

The design of this course really maximized the terrain, landscape and water features to its full potential, resulting in a course where each hole feels distinct and memorable.

Standout holes for me were:
Hole 2 - Nice elevate tee with creek OB right in front of the pin
Hole 4 - Curve your drive around the base of the hill and then an upshot into a wooded section guarding the pin
Hole 10 - Pretty wide expand of creek and rough in front of pin which is tucked in the woods. Decent fairway before you get to the OB if you want to play it safe and layup.
Hole 12 - Hyzer line over a nice sized pond
Hole 15 - Drive over a wider, boulder strewn section of the creek with the pin on the opposite bank

All in all, the water really adds both challenge and an extra level of scenery to a nice municipal park layout. While the fairways are mostly open, the pin placements have you still needing to make a technical upshot on most holes.

Making changes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 7, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

They've removed most of the reeds and are doing work on the creek on 17. Looks like they're putting in large rocks. They're also putting in concrete tee pads on all holes. Nice combination of obstacles. Wooded, but open, too.

Cons:

It can still be a disc eater, though losing one in the water is less of an issue than before

Other Thoughts:

Love this course. It's a "home course." One day I'd like to check out a tourney there on a Sunday.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice use of available land for a couple of cool elevation change shots. Easy to navigate and some boy scout volunteer work is only adding to the playability of this course. The wind is kind of funky here but it's nice. Seems to work with you most of the time. Almost always mowed. Another course I would recommend playing tourney rules as far as ob is concerned. Really tightens it up. Most holes are birdie possibilities, but don't count on doing it.

Cons:

Could use a tee box facelift, but not horrible. Can take a while to play a round in a group. A couple of the baskets could be replaced.

Other Thoughts:

Nice place to spend a saturday. Worth a drive.

Lose Discs Much???? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course offers up diverse challenges with creeks trees ponds and thick vegetation makes for interesting rounds

Cons:

If you hit the thick brush just say goodbye to that disc unless you have waiters and a machete.

Other Thoughts:

I am new to this sport and learned about the shoes on the electric wires if you ace or just wear your designated DG shoes out they are retired by hanging for all to see!!!!!

Still one of my favorites 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Excellent use of the terrain available.
- Water obstacles come into play on multiple holes to provide challenge.
- Good mix of hole variety and length.
- Great local disc golf community and one of the best courses to meet new players.
- Plenty of parking available.
- Very little interference with non disc golfers except a few walkers.
- The city recently cleaned up the brush from the waterways, which made finding discs easier and seemed to push the snakes out some.

Cons:

- Teepads are simply terrible.
- No signs anywhere and a few teepads can be difficult to find if you don't know the course.
- Flooding can be an issue after heavy rain.
- Maintenance is a little sketchy at times and if they miss a mowing rotation, they simply wait until the next scheduled day.
- Baskets are of random quality and make. Some are decent, others are pretty bad.

Other Thoughts:

This remains one of my favorite courses to play. It is not the best maintained or even designed course, but it's just fun. I have met so many friendly disc golf players here. I highly recommend finding a local and giving Porter a try. Do note however that water can be a serious issue here, especially if you don't have your drives under control. The weeds on hole 6 can be very unforgiving on a high or underpowered release.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good use of what was given. Sidewalks and across are OB which add to the challenge of the course.

Creek comes into play on #2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10,15,16,17,18
Pond comes into play on #12 and maybe 11
Sidewalks and across come into play on #2,3,4,5,6,7,8,12, and maybe 14 if you over throw it.

Park boundaries come into play on #1 (railroad tracks) #4 (Apartment complex) #11 (Fence Line) #13 (Tree line behind the basket usually marked with a string) #14 (Street) #17 and maybe 18 (the Parking lot)

Basically, if you play a round without an OB, you played a good round.

Hole #12 has a short and long tee marked. The long tee is the signature hole in my opinion.

Cons:

Dirt tee pads
Does not have tee signs, holes are marked for the most part, but keep getting destroyed.

Other Thoughts:

It is a fun course to play. Not real hard, but with all the OB, it makes it challenging.

Fresh Redux 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I liked the course quite a bit...

Recently redone and reopened after that had cleared a lot of brush out, planted new trees, lined creek w rocks and built a couple bridges.

The course was pretty well designed for the small amount of space used and occasionally different elevations added to the course as well.

Most memorable holes - 4, 6, 7, 9, 12, and 17.

Final was three over par, counting all as par threes besides hole 16.

Cons:

Baskets are pretty old and there was prob three different putts where I rocked the chains with a solid putt and my putter just popped out because of a lack of grip. Chains on a few baskets had also lost form / shape and left less of an area where you could sink a putt.

Other Thoughts:

Good course... replace the chains on a few baskets and it'd bump it to four stars. New trees once grown in will make it pretty challening.

This aint your mommas old Jimmy Porter 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun course that challenges old Porter for the crown. I like this layout more then the other one because of the fairways. This course doesnt really favor a certain player and I think that it is more lefty friendly then most courses. The front 9 has "fairways" on every hole except for hole 1. The fairways have the sidewalk on one side and the creek on the other making for some interesting shots when playing sidewalk and everything OB. The risk vs reward can be fun to because of the rough can get rough in places. A couple of holes, 7/9/10 are planted in spots where you have one option to get to it and if you dont it could hurt your score. I think that there are alot of birdies out here for a pro/adv player which makes it fun but you can also shoot high if you throw off line a couple of time. The back is pretty open and doesnt challenge you too much because of it. I think the birds are more plentiful on the back but they are everywhere if you look.

Cons:

Not much shade therefore it can get hot very fast! The pond is nasty, just like it used to be. There could be more trees to change a couple of shots up. The rough can get rough in spots. Easy to lose plastic in the creek and even when mowed there will be spots that your disc will vanish before your eyes. There are a couple of tees/holes that are hard to find first time out, but once you find them its not a problem. Parking can get interesting as the lot is pretty small.

Other Thoughts:

This course I compared to LL Woods in Lewisville because with sidewalk and beyond it plays alot like it. When this course gets mowed and cleaned up a bit, it will be fun and will blow Greenbelt out of the water. Bring lots of drinks cause it gets hot and its a long way back to the parking lot.
