Johnson State DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

All potential. High ceilings, nice holes which require a variety of shots. It was nice to throw downhill, even if that was not part of the actual course. Can play in any order you want. A lot of variation in the holes, so it was a mix of shots required. Woods weren't too thick.

Cons:

The front 9 holes are impossible to find. Course is clearly under work because cages have multiple numbers that are all crossed out. Lacks structure.

Other Thoughts:

Strange how some holes are very well marked but others have no indication of where they are. Some of them are clear but others have to be made up as you go.

Potential to be great; not well maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 12, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Some interesting holes, doesn't take too long to play (maybe an hour), good mix of right/left doglegs.

Cons:

Poorly maintained, terrible tee-pads (uneven, rutted, and too short), overgrowth June-September, a few overly difficult holes (#3-5, for example), many tee/tee-pad placements don't seem to make much sense, signs are no help at all, front six holes are difficult to locate, hidden behind parking lot/road.

Other Thoughts:

It's frustrating to play a course like JSC because it could be so much better if it were well-maintained. It's kind of like playing an ancient course that hasn't been touched for years.

Disappointed 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

--Free: How the game's supposed to be
--Scenery: There are some really gorgeous views: take a moment to look around especially after rattling the chains on #16.
--Baskets: It's nice to see a university investing in some good baskets.
--ace-able holes! This is a generally short course with numerous ace opportunities.
--Good for beginners: Being short with only a few blind holes make this a good course for first-timers and beginners.

Cons:

--Course design: This is my #1 con. Standing on many of the teeboxes, I felt there was no fairway. When luck is the most essential part of a hole it is not a good hole and on many of the holes this was the case.
--Signage: This signs are old and, for all intents and purposes, useless. A couple times, when I was unable to see the basket, trusted the sign and threw in the wrong direction. Better to take them down then to confuse people. Additionally, there are no signs to navigate the course. It's not illogical or overly difficult but I was grateful for the footprints in the snow leading me from basket to tee box.
--Teeboxes: Even with the understanding that many places can't put in concrete boxes for one reason or another, there are a few times when I felt cramped and unable to get any sort of a run up. I stumbled across a few Am boxes but they weren't labeled.

Other Thoughts:

The lack of fairways limit some of the Pros I've listed above. For example, it may be short and thus good for beginners, but with learners already battling the frustration of learning how discs fly may be doubly frustrated by not being able to throw their discs very far without hitting a tree or two.

In the end, this course could use a fair bit of work. I played with a guy the first time through and by myself the second time through. While there were many footprints in the snow, I didn't see anybody else. I wonder if people wouldn't be more inclined to play if this course were A) better maintained and B) advertised. There were no signs to show that the course exists.
