Jore-ah-la-mun... Jor-a-le-mon 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Awesome Pin Positions. I lost count of the number of cool pin positions at Joralemon. There were numerous pins anchored into rock outcroppings which made for some extremely picturesque golf holes and putts.
- Great Golf. Joralemon had some great golf. I loved the course for what it was... an extremely good city park course. The course had a little bit of everything from huge open bombers to extremely tight precise holes that required every kind of shot off the tee-pad - hyzers, annys, straight, sidearm, s-turns, overhands, rollers, etc.
- Open, Wooded, Open, Wooded. I loved how Joralemon started in the open for a few holes, then went into the woods for a few holes, and then back into the open, and then back into the woods over and over again throughout the course.
- Perfect Setting. Joralemon was in a very pretty park with beautiful woods, huge rock outcroppings, a swampy area and a large section of manicured grass.
- Good Club Scene. A few weeks after I played the course, Hurricane Sandy felled a tree, crushing a basket (I believe Hole 6). I saw a thread in the forums discussing the damage, and that the club had the basket replaced within about a week... Way to go Joralemon crew.

Cons:

- Middle 9 is Awkwardly Unfair. Holes 10-20 are somewhat awkward in their fairway shape, or having random trees in the middle of fairway, or in simply being too tight. I'm not sure if they were allowed to cut down any trees on that side of the street or what, because a few of the holes needed a little more chainsaw work. It was still fun golf, with fabulous pin positions and what not... but I was left scratching my head on a lot of the tee-pads.
- Hard to Say. Jor-a-le-mon... Jore-a-le-mun... Jore-ah-la-mun... say it with me: Joralemon. (I'm just kidding, it's not really a con).

Other Thoughts:

- Overall. I had a blast a Joralemon. It was a beautiful park with a great 27 hole course that offered a challenging mix of holes ranging from extremely wide and long to extremely tight and short. The rock outcroppings used throughout the course added to the beauty, and made for some much more interesting putting situations. I really enjoyed my round at Joralemon; and I'm sure that if you stopped here on a roadtrip, you would too!

Lucky to have J Park! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful Course. Excellent Design. Local Club that really cares about maintaining the course. Its got a little bit of everything. Park is mostly just disc golfers so its not busy. There are 28 holes so its got options for 18 and 27. Peaceful and beautiful. Streams and swamps winding throughout. AMAZING rock formations with challenging pin placements. Best of all excellent paver tee boxes!

Cons:

Atvs come through occasionally. No trash cans out on the course so pack out all your trash. No dedicated bathroom. ( Porta-potties in the warmer months) Not closer to my house!

Pros:

Beautiful course that now has concrete pavers on all 28 holes. Great variety of shots
through the park and woods. Nice basket placements make for some putting challenges. Water comes into play on a few holes and some elevation changes and cliffs
puts accuracy at a premium. Signage on all holes and benches are at all holes. The spectacular rock formations make this course phenomenal.

Cons:

Porta potties are taken away every November and return in May, no water available.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite course. Having 28 holes gives you plenty of options.

Wooded Nirvana 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wonderful 28 hole course that plays through the open and wooded sections of a fairly quiet town park.
- Disc golf nirvana - on most days, you show up and all you have to contend with is your discs, the course and your own thoughts - rarely used for anything but golf
- Ample room for parking right near a practice basket and hole #1
- Large kiosk with course map, flyers/info, L&F box and scorecards
- Great variety of settings - Holes 1-9 are mainly in the grassy, open section of the park, but there are some wooded tunnels and well-used trees for obstacles, protection, etc. - holes 10-21 (plus connector hole 12b) are back in a wooded section that is much more technical and provides a challenge mix of length and finesse, all surrounded by huge moss-covered boulders - holes 22-27 are back in the grassy park, but have a few in wooded groves, tunnels and nooks
- Layout variety - play the 27 hole loop or either of the two 18 hole loops (J-west has mostly the open holes and J-east has mostly the wooded holes) - hole 12b acts as a connector for J-west to bring you back to the open area before getting beat up by the woods
- Hole variety:
- the grassy area gives you some chances for open bombs (#4 is a big hyzer bomb, #8 is a long anny, #9 is a straight driving range with a tight tunnel at the end, #26 makes you work around a small patch of trees out in the main landing area) and guarded ace runs (#3 isn't long but has a nice set of trees guarding the pin, #7 is in range, but long grass in front and low-hanging trees make it tough, #22 is fairly open but the pin is tucked in a fairly tight cutout in the treeline)
- the wooded section really forces you to shape your shots through the tight fairways (#10 you need a perfect RHBH anny to get close, #11 needs a smooth flex shot to avoid the trees, boulders and swamp, #13 has a tight window across a valley, #14 needs a precise right-to-left downhill to avoid the swamp, #18 is a tight tunnel with a big, congested, uphill approach awaiting if you make it through, #19 needs a high RHFH to stay pin-high or risk putting from the bottom of a 10-15 foot rock wall)
- Tee signs are new and excellent with details and lengths from the main course designer, who is a certified land surveyor - unique "hole names" add to the charm and personaility of this course
- Tees are new 2'x2' pavers (were not yet installed for many of the previous reviews) that provide a nice solid, even runup and base - they generally allow you equal-elevation room to the side and behind if you have a bigger runup - surrounded by wooden boards and supported by gravel/fine/sand base that has been locked in with water to minimize movement
- Water and/or swamp comes into play as potential OB on maybe 4 holes, but the course itself (trees and natural design) create plenty of places for bad shots to be punished
- Very challenging, which makes a good shot or good round extremely rewarding
- Already mentioned the wooded holes, but the moss-covered boulders create for some visually stunning looks - pin #4 is perched up atop a tiered rock outcrop, like a memorial to the DG gods, pin #11 is perched on a ledge above the swamp, hole #16 is probably my favorite looking hole with the pin peering out from between 2 of the big boulders, hole #20 lets you look from atop the rocks down into a tree-smattered valley with the pin in a litte alcove at the end
- Sign after hole #11 is very clear about where to go to continue with the 27 hole loop or where to go to hit hole #12b and get back to the main park for an 18 hole loop
- The grassy section is regularly mowed by the town parks department
- Wooden planks/boards allow for good footing through the sometimes muddy portions of the woods holes
- Benches/seats at all holes (I think)
- No trash, as the locals take pride in carry-in/carry-out, or just plain carry-out whatever you come across

Cons:

Not much, but a few things worth mentioning:
- I'm partial to Innova baskets with the highly visible band - many baskets, including here, that are set in wooded areas are hard to see
- if you have the course map with you, you should be fine, but navigation from one hole to the next isn't 100% clear in a few spots - many holes have "next tee signs", but a few don't - while there isn't really anywhere else to go, there's no real clear indication that you need to cross the road to get from 9 to 10
- While the open holes are fun, a couple of them really don't punish you for bad shots (admittedly, I'm biased towards wooded courses/holes) - holes #8 and 9 come to mind where you could be 100' left of your target and still have clean, easy approach to the basket
- On the few occasions where DG isn't the only thing going on, the most frequent visitors are from dirt bikes/ATVs that can be loud/distracting and can get in your way on holes, 1, 4, 5 and 6
- Comes with the territory, but some parts of the wooded area can get muddy, but luckily it's mostly on the walk between holes and not in fairways/greens - the planeks/boards mentioned above help combat this
- To me (and maybe I just haven't yet found a consistent option), hole #17 is kind of a crapshoot - your drive heads right for the wall of trees and you just hope you miss them (or most of them)

Other Thoughts:

- Pavillion at hole #1 for tourney central, weather protection, etc.
- Check yourself for ticks when you get home
- Only 1 official tee position, but some locals have installed/played unofficial short tees (marked by hard-to-find bricks in the ground) that may become more used/official later

This course really is top-notch. I've only been playing for a couple years and have played a relatively small # of course (20 at this time), but I've made sure I play top-rated ones and J-Park stands up to them all. I'm proud to have assisted in the installation of the new tees at this amazing course.

It rocked me! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

27 hole course set in an out of the way park. Each hole has a very nice, grippy, paving stone tee pad and excellent basket. Signs at each hole show line, obstacles and distance.

Navigation is aided throughout with arrows and carved wooden objects on many of the trees. Different colors are used, and catch the eye well. I had no problems finding my way around even without a map.

Excellent variety. There are not only many different types of shots needed here, there is several different landscapes and hole designs. The first 9 holes play in a typical park setting. You throw through open fields and mature trees, usually ending at a basket position tucked into the woods, or lodged on a rocky outcropping. Nothing too fancy, just good disc golf shots. When you cross the road to hole 10 you enter a totally different world. There you get tight wooded lines, some ups and downs, and tons of baskets perched on or between very cool rock formations and boulders. When you get to hole 22 you re-enter the nice park setting and leave the heavily wooded, rocky alternate universe. There is also an option of playing simply an 18 hole loop and skipping some of the heavily wooded holes. Blasphemy I say!!

Throughout the course there are open 500' plus holes and tight wooded ace runs around 200'. There are sweeping hyzer lines, and butt puckering tight tunnels. And always there are baskets placed near trees or rocks. Greens are all very fair, but there is constant risk reward shots on drives that can reach the basket, or approaches. This is simply a fun course to play. Not overly punishing, but enough challenge to test anyone.

Cons:

A few holes have some pretty tight bordering on unfair ways. If heavily wooded fairways bother you consider playing the 18 hole loop to avoid some trees.

Basket visibility is difficult. Most are tucked in woods or near rocks, and they blend in pretty well.

Other Thoughts:

Damn, I enjoyed this course a lot. During the first 9 holes I was wondering why people get so excited about it. And after playing the middle section I simply wanted more, more, more. The last few holes were a little bit of a let down for me. I really enjoy the woods, rocks and abuse the middle section dishes out. It is reminiscent of Devens, Hyzer Creek, Sugaree or Fox Chase if you've played any of them.

This course has a lot to offer. If you enjoy open air golf 1-9 and 22-27 will keep you happy. If you like tight lines, some small hills and lots of rock-laden basket positions then 10-21 will put a smile on your face. The only things this course really lacks are extreme elevation changes, and tough water carries. Everything else is here to enjoy.

Parts of the middle section play in some low-lying areas. Nice bridges and walk ways are in place, but during high water it looks like it could get buggy and swampy. Last year when I tried to play here it was flooded pretty bad, and I had to play elsewhere. Try to check conditions if you are heading here in Spring or during a really wet year. Right now it is about perfect.

Play here. It is definitely worth a stop. And it is definitely one of the top courses in New York.

Pleasant stop in NY 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course in great shape, must have a dedicated team of people that care for the course. I didn't have a map but was easily able to navigate the 18 hole layout my first time today.
I think that the woods holes that start at hole 10 are far tougher and more scenic. I didn't have time to play all the woods holes but 10, 11, & 12b were very interesting. The other holes in the 18 hole layout were enjoyable to play.

Cons:

Although the holes are well thought out and present different challenges they do tend to run right up to each other and present the problem of overthrows clipping someone on another tee/basket.

Other Thoughts:

I think that this is a great course for a beginner to advanced player but could see a pro not being challenged.

Amazing 2+ years

Pros:

1. Large Tees
2. Mixture of wooded and open holes
3. Picture perfect landscapes
4. Maps included distance, par, and map
5. Will cause you to throw every disc and throw that you have in your bag

Cons:

1. BUGGY
2. Can be difficult to navigate from hole to hole
3. Baskets when visible were still difficult to spot from the tees.

Other Thoughts:

I was only able to play 19 holes of this course because it started to thunderstorm. However with that being said I know that this is definitely a course I want to visit again. Each hole provided a new layout and therefore a new challenge. I was glad to see a map, lost disc trap, trashcans, and a porta-potty at the beginning of the course. These holes are very long and will force you to throw as far as you can. This park appears to be very well maintained. We did have a couple dirt bikers ride by us through the course which was a bit strange. Benches were also available at every hole. Would never play this course again without bug spray. Wooded holes provide just the right amount of space to throw to make it challenging but at the same time not overwhelming. I was chased by all kinds of huge, flying, black, biting bugs. To recap, this is a great course for those that have been playing a while as well as for those who are just starting out. Course provides a good challenge without being too ridiculously difficult. Beautiful landscape. Located in a nice park.

Sooo Much Fun!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has a huge variety not only in holes but also in layouts. You have 28 different holes which can be played in a 27 hole configuration and two different 18 hole loops. There is a great amount of OB used which makes some rather boring holes interesting and some really good holes great. Even though you don't throw over any water it still comes into play on several holes. There are multiple ace runs and several long hyzer bombs. Every tee is marked with good signs denoting what hole it is for each different layout. The plethora of next tee signs also makes navigation a breeze. There is a lot this course has to offer with holes all in the woods, holes that start in the open and finish in the woods, holes that start in the woods and finish on the open, holes that start in the woods play into the open and finish in the woods, and several all open shots.

The woods are nice and clean and the grass is all relatively short. This course is loved by someone! Maps and scorecards are available in a kiosk near the first tee. There are multiple porta potties and they are pretty clean. There is a warm up basket near the pavilion and benches and trash cans rampant throughout. There are also plenty of sports fields and a tennis court on site also.

Cons:

There is multiple criss cross of holes that might get you turned around if not paying attention. The walkways in between holes also cross over. There are multiple holes that start or finish very close to the road. The size of the tee pads could be changed to make them wider in most cases and and longer on a few holes. There are also multiple pads that need leveling as rocks and sticks are protruding. With all the information the tee sign can be a little confusing.

Other Thoughts:

One of my favorite course to play in New York so far and in my top 5 overall.

starr of the trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played J-park during an 8 course roadtrip of fantastic courses in PA,VT & NY. My method of rating new courses is to rate each hole as I play and write it on the scorecard.
5- are epic holes-well designed, challenging with one or more natural features that make it a memorable hole.
4-excellent-well designed and aesthetically pleasing with a feature that separates it from the pack.
3-solid but nothing extraordinary
2-filler
1-bad
0-really bad
The biggest "pro" of Joralemon is the quailty of the holes. Using this rating system, J-park has an astounding 17 epic (5rated holes) and 10 excellent (4 rated holes). We did not play 12b. The score averaged back to 18 holes is 83.3 which is the highest to date. So, if aethestics and natural beauty is your thing, this course is right at the top.
The run of holes across Starr road (10-18) are simply the best nine holes I could ever hope to play.
Phenomenal.

Cons:

You may need to print a map or make a sketch of the one at the kiosk.

Nice Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This was our first time playing on official course so totally a beginner. We were on vacation in NY. Now I think we are spoiled; what a beautiful course! Very scenic with the rock formations, wooded areas and wide open spaces.

Loved that there were benches at everyhole to rest and relax! Nice touch.

Discs were going everywhere but had no problems finding them! Not crowded which was nice also.

Enjoyed it so much we came back for a second round couple days later!

Cons:

Couple things; first navigating around was a bit tricky and had to ask next hole location from others playing that were familiar with the course. Especially the hole by the creek, paper sign was about washed away & finally figured out after 25min we needed to go accross the road. That was a bit frustrating. Vinyl signs are not that expensive.

Bring water because there aren't any fountains & it's quite a bit of walking.

Last thing which didn't see anyone else mention is lookout for the huge wasp mound near hole one! These large wasps (alot of them) in holes in the mound itself and are very active!!! Be careful!

Other Thoughts:

Overall give this course two thumbs up!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

There is a lot of variety throughout the 18 hole loop that I played. There are some opportunities to throw big bombs as well as some tight wooded finesse holes that test your line shaping ability.

There is a nice big field by the first tee that is great for warm-up and practice throws.

Nice proximity to the I-87 makes it easy to get to if you're just passing through (as I was).

Low tech signs at each hole show all the needed information. Shape, obstacles, distance and even clever names are shown at each tee.

Cons:

I had a lot of trouble with navigation on this course. The layout is not particularly intuitive and the next tee signage is not particularly helpful. I spent quite a bit of time wandering around trying to figure out where the next hole was. In particular, going from 9 to ten across the road and then 12B to 13 back across was very confusing.

No trash cans on the course. Be prepared to pack it out.

The gravel tee pads seem particularly susceptible to puddling. It rained briefly when I first arrived and a few puddles had already started to form. With more significant rain most would've been muddy with quite a bit of standing water.

Other Thoughts:

Note that this review is based only on the 18 hole loop rather than the alternate 27-hole layout. Due to the high heat and humidity when I played, I had to cut my round short.

This is a great road trip stop because of it's proximity to I-87. I had some extra time while driving through the area and was at the course maybe five minutes after getting off the highway.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Possibly the most aesthetically pleasing course around, the rolling hills and use of mossy rocks made for numerous interesting and attractive holes that could not be duplicated anywhere else.
Great variety in elevation, ceiling height, left and right holes, and distances with many risk vs. reward opportunities.
Long Gravel tee pads with nice colored tee signs as well as signs leading to most of the next baskets to assist with navigation and flow. The people I played with loved the unique signs to guide you to the next hole.
Porto-potties on site.
Benches or large rocks to sit on at nearly every hole.
Playground for the kids and a large picnic area
Kiosk with map on it and a mail box with score card for 18. I like that they have an option to play 18 or 27 (which is not just 1-18)
Practice Basket

Cons:

Very few cons. The amount of trees can cause some frustration if you are not on your game.
Only 1 tee pad and basket position, but there are 27 different holes, so you can change up what 18 you play.
Small chance of disc loss on some holes.
Practice basket was labeled #1 and caused confusion

Other Thoughts:

This is a solid challenging course with out being insanely frustrating for new players or too easy for advanced players.
The terrain is kind of rough and the holes are a little too challenging for young kids. Do not plan on bringing a wheeled cooler, stroller, or push cart.
There are so many great photo opportunities, if you want to bring a camera. It's hard to justify adding this course to a day trip since it is nearly 30 miles from any other course and basically in the middle of no where, but it is worth the stop if you can make it, you will not be disappointed!

The layout of this course is very nice you can pay it as an 18 hole course or a 27 hole course I must say i played all 27 and it was such a wonderful course. Signs on every hole and every hole has a name too which is a cool little touch that most courses dont do.

Cons:

The course is very out of the way of everything altho well worth the trip. A few of the holes are a little hard to find for first time players but for the most very good flow. I had the opportunity to play with someone who has played that course before which make it a little easier.

Other Thoughts:

There is a part in this course where you have to go across the street that I would not have known to go to with out some one with me. The back is well worth to play the back part I think it is the best part of the course. The back takes you through the woods.

Fulfilling its Destiny 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

• 27 holes with a fine balance of open/wooded holes and right/left/straight shots necessitating diversity of throws
• signage at every natural/gravel/crushed stone tee pad
• challenging and thoughtful pin placements
• elevation incorporated ingeniously
• baskets in good condition
• Some creative directional arrows pointing to next tee location
• low disc loss possibility...even on holes with water hazards
• woods holes across the street logically progress in intricacy, length & variety and are some of the most enjoyable I've ever played
• design allows you to 'custom play' so you aren't locked in to playing all 27 holes if you don't want to (for example, there's a 12a hole that allows players to skip the remaining woods holes and continue across the street finishing up with 22-27 for a total of 18 holes)
• beautiful boulder/rock formations throughout the course
• Secluded, quiet, peaceful
• port-a-pots, pavilion w/picnic tables in park

Cons:

• Natural/gravel/crushed stone tee pads - some of which can be inconsistent; my lead foot slipped on a couple drives even though I didn't use a run up. I self corrected by being more mindful/careful at certain tees.
• First timers should bring a map! The flow is a little odd at times as some tees/pins are close to each other or are on the way to/between walks to others (for example #2's pin and subsequent walk to #3 is right by 25's pin; walk from #3 pin to #4 tee goes right by 25's tee and 24's pin).
• A few of the holes feel like 'transitions' - however if the parks dept. lets you install 27 holes, you do the best with what you're given.
• No water available so plan well and bring plenty since its 27 holes

Other Thoughts:

The front nine are mostly open and either start or finish under tree cover. They're a decent test of power (5 holes over 300ft with the remainder being no less than 255ft) but more importantly require approach accuracy with pins being either tree protected, elevated, near the creek or snuggled within gaps at the woods edge.

The wooded holes across the street (#10-21) are simply amazing - not only from an enjoyment & design perspective but aesthetically. It's as if the thousands of years of evolution it took to create this place has fulfilled its destiny as a disc golf course (I'm actually surprised the parks dept. let them use such a pristine area). These are some well conceived technical holes with plentiful elevation changes, mature tree-lined fairways, boulders/rocks as obstacles and some fantastic pin placements utilizing the surrounding terrain resourcefully.

The final holes (22-27) are a return to the general area where the front 9 are located and have similar characteristics. Not surprisingly, these holes don't quite have the 'wow' factor as the woods holes and pretty much end the round gently as if the wind was let out of the sail.

This is a pleasant place to play offering sufficient challenge for experienced players but providing enough flexibility and diversity to attract those who aren't as skilled. Definitely a must play if in or around the greater region.

Pros:

The Albany area does not have a variety of courses to choose from. However, they are very lucky to have this 28 hole gem at Joralemon Park. The course has so many different types of holes to challenge all golfers. The 1st hole will test your rolling skills, if you have them, or you will have to throw a low laser because of all the branches which creates a ceiling like effect. The 4th hole has a cool elevated pin placement on large rocks which will create some challenging puts. The 9th hole with its wide open fairway will give you the opportunity to show off your power and then with its tricky pin placement next to fast moving creek you need to be very accurate with your second shot. The first 9 holes are mostly open fairway (besides 3) that will test your power and accuracy. Starting at hole 10 it almost turns into a different course when you enter the woods. If you do not like wooded holes play hole 12b which will take you back out to the mostly open fairways. You will skip the mostly wooded area but still be able to play 18 holes. If you want to play 27 holes play hole 12a and hope you can keep your drives straight on your live to avoid all of the trees. I have never played a course with such a large number of quality holes. Hats off to Kevin and all the Disc Cappers who made this course possible.

Cons:

It would be nice if there was a spot where scores cards were available. The layout is not a problem for me because of the amount of times I have played this course but I can see how it would be confusing for first time players. This is also a challenging course which is great for "good" players but when I bring people out for the first time they get discouraged very quickly. A different set of tee boxes or pin placements would help make it friendlier for newbies. The signage is not bad but there is definitely some room for improvement. It is hard to say too many cons because they are still working on finalizing the new holes.

Other Thoughts:

This is a wonderful course that should challenge even the best golfers. The land and layout is great. Some of the little things like signs and tee pads will constantly get better as there is an extremely dedicate group of disc golfers that maintain and update this course. dum de dum de... WOW!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 3, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is well laid-out, with lots of thought to pin placements. It makes fantastic use of natural features and terrain. It almost feels like this park is built for disc golf, with the tennis court and kid's playground an afterthought. Some of the holes - especially on the new woods holes across the street - are truly amazing; you can't believe that they got the hole in there, but they did - and it's marvelous.

Cons:

There are no amenities at all - bathroom, water, etc. The signage, while there, tends to be small. Unobtrusive, is a good word. Without a map, a first-timer would undoubtedly get lost a couple of times (I did). While there is a kiosk with some information - including a large map of the old layout - there is no information on the new layout except online. Some new course maps with scorecards would be great.

The course plays around some great, well-groomed fairways that are very likely busy with families during prime times; when I went it was empty, but still something to consider. Signage warning non-golfers that they were in/near a disc golf course would be an excellent idea; holes #2, #4, and #17/26 all go very close to areas that are likely multi-use. A spotter would be an excellent idea when other people were around.

Other Thoughts:

My first thoughts as I played this course were along the lines of "okay, this is pretty nice. Nothing fancy, but pretty nice."

Then, you get to hole #3 - which uses two big rock outcroppings as a natural dogleg fairway... hole #4, with the basket up on a big rock... hole #9 - a big D hole with a teeny, tiny gap to shoot at the end... "Okay, this is pretty f#ckin' cool. Good mix, some big D, real mix of shots required... Really nice."

Then, the course crosses the street and goes into the woods.

Two words: Holy Crap.

If you only have time or stamina for 18 holes, you're totally missing out. The woods holes are super technical, with truly imaginative pin placements; only a couple big D holes, the woods section requires finesse and really picking a line. It's new, so getting around is iffy in spots; however, there are signs and arrows and the trails between holes are bedding in. Even thought it was my first time through, I had very little problem with finding my way.

Back onto the park side, you get a break with a couple of nice ace opportunities, then the course winds around with a chance for some big air just before the end.

Cons aside, this course is on my favorites and will remain there. The woods section really impressed me, and gives this course 4.5 stars even with no amenities. With a bathroom, a water station, and some better signage it would truly be five-star.

Love this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

My cell phone does not work there! Seriously this course is very beautiful. So much variety. long open holes, lots of woods, elevation. 27 holes to play. The 12 holes on "the other side of the road" are amazing with the huge rocks and elevation changes.

Cons:

The woods hols are still a work in progress, but they are very playable.

Other Thoughts:

Can't wait to go back!

Jurassic Joralemon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Set in a remote location,Joralemon Park, in an out of the way town, Coeymans, NY, and with 28 spread out holes over primarily disc golf territory your not ever gonna have to deal with crowds. This course though, at this writing, lacking in yuppie amenities does not need them as the disc golf here is so strong. The course has open big air shots, tricky approaches, fast greens, low ceiling rollers, short holes, long holes, deep woods holes, flat, rolling, uphill and downhill holes. The front 9 play flat and semi-open but theres a lot to keep you interested. Not a bad hole in this bunch as you play over well mowed lawns, near a stream and below and between beautiful park trees. Holes 4 and 9 provide some big arm fun as well as interesting approaches,#4 to the top of a boulder ridge after a long sweeping drive 460' past some sycamores and #9 a huge 567' couple of drives and then negotiating a tight doorway into the woods with a pretty green with a stream nearby. Then you cross a bridge and go to the other side of Starr Rd. This is where the magic starts. Holes 10-21 are some wonderful pure disc golf holes through a rolling forrest laden with huge boulders and old trees. Fairways not only meander up and down these old woods they are weaving between massive trees and carving immense boulders that form obstacles as well as fairways. The holes start out as clever technicical fun shots and then begin to get longer and more epic as you get closer to finishing with the woods on #21. Old mountain woods so not a lot of thorns or shule to punish you off the fairways. Your score will get hurt but you won't get scratched or frustrated by lost discs too much here. After 21 you cross back over STarr Rd. and back to the more traditional park atmosphere. Hole #22 is a nice breather, open ace run, after the woods. Hole #25 is a lovely fairway with low canopy. #26 enables you to air it out one last time 553' before finishing on the R turning low ceiling #27. There seems to be an active club making gradual upgrades here and the few locals I encountered were friendly helping me to find a disc hiding in some leaves. I can't say enough about the variety here...the perfect tournament course as it is spread out with 11 deep woods holes, a slew of more open holes, a sprinkling of rollers and no L/R advantage. I can't say enough on the premium disc golf here and the enjoyable peaceful atmosphere. The holes on the other side of Starr Rd' elevate this course to amongst the best I have played. Just a beautiful round.

Cons:

The basic amenities that many require for perfection are not here. Gravel/natural tees. Attempts are in place to aid navigation but it was still tricky for a first timer and tee signs are not always present. Could use a few more places to sit out in the woods as your really hiking up and down hills out there. In the woods a few of the fairways could be improved if the SMALLER trees/branches were tamed a bit.....nothing drastic just a little pruning or taking out a few to better define greens and/or fairway.....this usually happens as a course matures though so it didn't bother me. There was some local riding his dirtbike all over the place which was a bit weird...but thats part of the character of out of the way America...I only mention it because I see others have remarked on this as well and it might be a pattern. The disc golf and fun play of this course really make up for any of these inconsequential gripes and all of these most likely will be rectified in time I am sure. It's just nice to play a course that was obviously designed by people who play the sport and understand what makes a fun course. Finishing 6 holes are wonderful but seemed really bland after all that fun in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

I notice that many of the reviews for this course are set prior to the expansion across Starr Rd. Those 12 holes over there really blew me away so I am sure the rating for this course should be higher. After hole 11 you have a choice to play the more epic woods or finish with the final 6 holes of the course....you just have to decide to play 12A or 12..it is clearly marked but if you don't have the stamina or your with children etc....playing the longer wooded 27 could be a grind as your really out in the woods and not near the lot for the rest of the day.

Pleasant and quiet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

28 holes with an option for an 18 hole loop. Great variety and creative pin placements make this course a real pleasure to play. I met some friendly locals that showed me around and were fun to play with. Beautiful natural setting with large boulders and plenty of wildlife as well as rare plants and flowers. Informative signs on most holes. Park has picnic tables, portable restrooms and playground.

Cons:

The wooded holes towards the middle of the layout are new and need some clearing. Navigation would be extremely difficult without updated map. Bring lots of water because there is nowhere to fill up a bottle, and no stores for miles.

Other Thoughts:

Check out the cave and the old stonework in the woods! This area is rich in history and it shows.
