great fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short course that is beginner friendly.
Easy to navigate for the most part.
Variety of open/wooded shots as well as terrain variety.
Beautiful park.
Several ace runs.
Great variety of left to right and right to left shots.

Cons:

Some holes overlap fairways or are very close to other fairways.
Can get busy.
Some teepads are broken.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to stop by and play if you're in the area and need a quick round. The first several holes provide open shots but have OB's that make the short nature of the course challenging. Several holes cross over a creek that runs through the park and makes it fun to try and push your throws. This park can get busy but the short nature of the park allows for minimal backups. Overall this is a good course and will play again when back in the area.

Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great Course for beginners and intermediates. It is a perfect course to work on your shorter game. For the most part don't even need to bring a driver except for 1-2 holes. Good changes in elevation and has a variety of layouts. Most holes are rocky and in the open. Others are dirt and grass. There are a few that are covered in pineneedles. Can have a quick and fun round. There are decent bathrooms, playground, picnic area, and small baseball field. Good place to bring the family.

Cons:

It can be very crowded. Located next to NC State and during the summer the course is packed with college kids. Low quality baskets. Some holes interest each other. Not anyholes to unleash a driver on.

Other Thoughts:

definetly a great course to start your disc golf career.

Such a Classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Easy Access
-Great Walking Design
-Awesome course for beginners
-Variety of shots come into play
-Changes in elevation
-Good course for beginners

Cons:

-Chains are notorious for chain outs
-Longest hole is still under 300ft
-Course can get pretty busy/crowded when class is in session at NCSU

Other Thoughts:

Kentwood is a great local course. Good course to boost your confidence. This review would be higher if the course had added length. You can take a midrange and a putter out here and score low.

Rec-Level Classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 19, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

For beginners to intermediate players, Kentwood is a fun course, with birdie opportunities on every hole.

+ Nice elevation. Holes 5, 7, 14, and 15 are uphill (14 being the toughest hole on the course). Holes 6, 8, 9, 16, and 17 are downhill, 8 being the longest and biggest elevation drop. #18 is also long and slightly downhill.

+ Variery. Fairly equal number of holes for BH and FH players. Water is in play on hole 3. Ace opportunities on *many* holes. Only one true tunnel hole (#12).

+ Easy to get a round in quickly, under 45 minutes, if player traffic isn't too heavy.

+There have been improvements at Kentwood recently, including one new concrete tees. (Hopefully, more on the way soon.) Boy Scouts regularly do their projects here, putting in tee box benches. New mulch was put down in the last year or two to help with drainage.

+ Navigation is easy.

+ Nice new bathrooms.

+ Other amenities: new playground, tennis courts, baseball field

+ Kentwood is a fun tournament / league night course. The flow is good. I've never experienced a back-up here. It's just an all-around fun course to play, even if the challenge isn't that great.

Cons:

- This is a very busy course when the weather is nice, especially during school months. (NC State is close by and a big percentage of players are State students.) I play early on Saturday morning when the college crowd is still sleeping it off.

- If you're an advanced player, you may get bored here quickly. It's a short course (most holes are in the 200-300 range, with a few shorter than 200).

- Some of the tees are small, old, cracking, or all of the above. It's not a huge deal as most holes don't require a big run-up. Hopefully, this is something that can be improved in the near future.

Other Thoughts:

For a quick, fun, confidence-building round, there aren't any better options in the Triangle.

Sweet LIttle Course Marred By Some Players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 12, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a lovely little postage stamp of a course that fits the space quite well despite a variety of limitations.

Cons:

Generally quite crowded. Popular among beginners. That's cool but it does tend to clog up play.

Tees are in disrepair and erosion is gradually wearing away the earth around many of the hillside tees.

Way too many players leave trash clean up to volunteers and other players.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the holes are right beside a sidewalk and the final holes for each 9 are by the parking lot.

Occasionally this leads experienced players to do ridiculous things like practice putting on a hole that's in play.

All 3 times this has happened to me the players were quite self-righteous about it.

Though they had a bunch of discs I didn't see any of them birdie when they were playing and this is a course where not birdying certain holes suggests you don't really need all those discs.

But I guess a certain amount of poor behavior comes with any human endeavor.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 12, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great place to work on 150-250ft game. It's got that great beat-in course feel considering it has been around quite awhile. It's just open enough for beginners to work on hitting lines but still fun for the seasoned players as well. I love the design, yes there are some crossover fairways, but people are always courteous to players on the tee.

Cons:

Tee pads need replacing badly. Some are still in tact but others are broken up in spots or have a 1 ft drop off in the front of the pad, begging for a rolled ankle. Also, the course is pretty rocky as everyone has reviewed. Your disc will get some scuffs on it...but it is a great place to beat a new disc in and you can always count on your disc sticking where it lands. It's crowded usually but never to the point where your waiting more than a minute or two to tee off.

Other Thoughts:

I gotta give this course a 3 just because it's a great pitch and putt course for any disc golfer and it just has that good ol' local course feel to it. If I didn't play here at least once a week I'd probably give it a 2.5, but the more you play it the more you love it.

*Beware of the Kentwood Curse*
Chain-outs are very common here due to the baskets being the old DGA baskets. When you chain out, it's more commonly referred to as "Kentwooding it"

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Kentwood may be the best course to introduce someone to disc golf on. Each and every hole can be birdied with a putter...but that doesn't mean that it is a bad course, just not a course to work on your distance game. It has great teepads, nice stone distance markers, and good baskets. It makes excellent use of the little land that is available, and requires several different lines. Also has some nice uphill and downhill shots mixed in.

Cons:

Short...and not quite as challenging as I may have made it sound in the Pros section. Gets very crowded, especially in the summer. Watch for stoners on 13.

Other Thoughts:

This is definitely not a "destination" course, but if you are on your lunch break and want to squeeze a round in, there isn't a better course than Kentwood. Again, this is a beginners course. If you go to it with other expectations, you will likely be disappointed, but if you go with just a putter and a mid you can have a good time.

Bring a bag of putters 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Fun course
- Easy to navigate
- Good mix of holes
- Close to NCSU campus
- Been in the ground since 1983!
- Pretty scenery

Cons:

- Can get crowded depending on time of year and time of day
- if you want to air it out don't come here

Other Thoughts:

This course is just overall a fun little romp in a city park. It is close to my alma mata NCSU. When school is in session and it's after lunch it can get pretty crowded with students. but if you play in the morning and/or during a holiday/summer you will probably be alone.

A short course with plenty of elevation changes and twists and turns, it is a good place to learn the game. It's also a good place for seasoned players to practice short drives with putters and mids, and to work on the short game. Just plain old good fun.

I wish I had played here while in college (didn't pick up the game until a few years after graduation). but probably a good thing I didn't play in college since it would have kept me out of the books.

skew factor: I'm a State grad...

Pros:

Nice course...not too long but has some good technical aspects to it. Easy and quick course to play. Takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to play

Cons:

About 3/4 of the holes are throwing your discs into rocks, and not nice little rocks, but big, dent your disc, rocks. So beware...take a crappy disc or champion discs (bc they don't tend to be as affected by rocks)

Good course for something random we picked while in Raleigh 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good course for beginners learing the sport for the first time. Good mix of holes uphill, downhill. Good course to work on your putting and mid range shots.

Cons:

Tee pads in my opinion were awful. Not that you really need a long tee pad on this course, but I just prefer a concrete poured tee pad.

Not very many holes to use your driver.

Other Thoughts:

I live in Charlotte, play disc golf regularly and enjoyed this course for having picked a random course that two other buddies and I agreed on. It's a good course to shoot under par and build up some confidence if you are like me and in a slump. When back in Raleigh, I will play this course again along with a few others.

One of the first courses I ever played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Not a difficult course overall, but certainly holds some challenges. I've thrown some terrible shots on this course, but I've also hit some amazing ones. Nice changes in elevation, lots of open holes, some chances to air it out. Really should not be terribly difficult to shoot par or under.

Cons:

Footing can be tricky on some of the holes that play in a rocky area on a hillside (that is, if you aren't careful).

Other Thoughts:

Just a fun course in the middle of Raleigh. Always lots of folks playing here.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 14 is an uphill monster unless you have an utterly reliable and long hyzer. It's the one hole I at kentwood that I've never birdied.

Classic Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- The course where I first learned to play. A lot of people can say this.
- Great course to practice your short game. Almost all of the holes are in the 200-250ft range. Only Hole 14 requires a driver. The rest of the course is midranges and putters off the tee.
- Two practice baskets
- Great for a 30-45 min round if you play when it's not busy.
- Great for ace runs. 8 of my 12 aces are at Kwood.

Cons:

- Watch you back. There are a lot of noobs and drunk college students. People getting hit is a daily occurrence.
- Busy. All the time. If you get there before 1 or 2, you won't see many people, otherwise the place is slammed due to being so close to NC State.
- The course is jammed into a small piece of land, so fairways are close together and in one case crossing (7 and 16).
- Tee pads have improved thanks to CA, but they're still pretty small.
- Can get very hectic around Hole 4 and 5 if baseball is going on.

Other Thoughts:

Its not a great course, but it's not trying to be. It's a great course to learn the game on. I may be a little biased because I sure I've played Kentwood more than any other course, but enjoy this pitch and putt when I'm in the mood to practice the short game.

Classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is a classic in the area. Well maintained. The challenge here is to see how low you can keep your score. I've played many tournaments here and it is always fun to play a round at kentwood. Most everyone is courteous and casual. You will find all levels of skill here and many obstacles. Awesome course for birdies and aces.

Cons:

Dangerous course. Disks coming from all angles with a play ground in the middle. Road traffic, crossing fairways, rocky terrain.

Other Thoughts:

My wife was permanently disabled on this course right before our wedding. She was hit in the arm by a disk on hole 18. She zigged when she should have zagged and never recovered from the injury. Keep your eyes open at all times while playing here.

That being said, this is a classic course that will always have a place in my listings as a fun course to play. I have many aces under my belt here.

Cons:

You climb up a rocky hill throughout the round, so if you throw DX or Pro D plastic your disc will eat the rocks.

A few cons hold it back 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I like the design of this course, the holes make excellent use of the terrain and provide plenty of shot variety. There is a good mix of open and wooded and in-between holes with plenty of elevation changes. Several deceptively hard holes and a few that are just fun throws (#3 and #8 come to mind). Fairly short course with plenty of birdie and ace opportunities for a good player and makes it extremely playable for beginners. Couple of practice baskets for your pre-round warm-up too. Park is well maintained and the course receives occasional upgrades.

Cons:

Unfortunately there's a lot I don't like about this course that greatly limits how much I play here.

The first is that the holes are a bit cramped. By this I mean there are many holes where you can throw at, across, or alongside another hole. You will hear a lot of "four!" and "heads up!" when you play here. This is further aggravated by the fact that a lot of beginners play here (which is great!) but they often don't stay on their own fairways.

The first two holes are not very beginner friendly, despite my assertion the overall course is. The first is alongside the parking lot in such a way that the normal RHBH fade send a disc diving towards the parked cars. The other side has a playground so it's not a great setup, especially for the beginning hole. The second hole is along the road and again the RHBH fade puts your disc flying at cars.

A good majority of the course is set on a hillside that is more rocks than dirt and grass. They are not large rocks and are easy to walk on, but they really tear up your discs. Only play beat discs here if you can.

Finally, the biggest drawback for me is the course gets too much traffic. Often there are large (5+) groups playing here and many seem disinclined to let faster groups play through. During heavy use times this course really isn't worth playing if you play fast and/or are a small group or solo. My recommendation in this case is to play late evening or, even better, before noon. Course also seems less crowded in the summer when college is out.

Other Thoughts:

I'd put this course in the same class as Cornwallis in Durham as far as challenge goes.

This isn't really a fault of the park, but there is often a lot of trash thrown on the course that takes away from the aesthetic appeal.

The park itself has a shelter, playground, and several tennis courts that were last resurfaced in fall 2008. One court includes a practice wall.

-Distances provided on most holes
-Fun course which can provide a morale booster as scores are typically under par

Cons:

-Crowded. Near North Carolina State University. Traffic on the course is frequently quite heavy.
-Some holes pay over each other so you have to be alert. You throw over other fairways, baskets, and tee boxes.
-Until you know the course there are some holes you are uncertain which basket to throw to

A Great Beginner's Course in Central Raleigh, NC! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained course. Benches available all over the course for those in need of them. Wide open fairways for 200-300 distance drives. (Qty: 2) Practice Baskets.

Cons:

Hard and sometimes rocky ground tears into discs. Some areas are covered in rocky stones, so bring your comfortable hiking shoes. Water hazards (after rain/snow) can cause you to lose discs, or you getting wet. Baskets are difficult to distinguish from the surrounding terrain and woods. No signage, and difficult to find markers/tees.

Other Thoughts:

We visited the Kentwood Park Disc Golf Course in Raleigh, NC. Weather conditions were approximately 26 degrees Fahrenheit, snow/ice, with 7 mph winds (23 mph gusts) on a mostly-cloudy day.

Kentwood is much like many other courses, in that it is placed right on top of an existing City Park. The terrain is mostly flat, with a few baskets on hilly/rocky areas, and there's a few creeks (water hazards) and ditches to avoid. There are only a few holes which are surrounded by trees, but most of the holes are in wide open areas.

It was very difficult finding the first tee when we first arrived, especially since we'd never played this course before. Hint: The first tee is between the parking lot and the playground equipment, facing the street.

There are benches scattered throughout the course, which is nice for those that need a place to rest. Due to space restrictions, many of the fairways cross each other, and so you'll have to constantly watch for stray discs. We played on a fairly slow day, due to the snow, but I've heard that Kentwood Park is normally packed with people.

This is a great beginner's course in the heart of Raleigh, NC and right next to NC State University. The park has a playground for kids, Tennis Courts, and a baseball field for the members of your group that don't feel like playing disc golf.

Considering the land size they had to work with, I think they designed this course rather well, and it is also well maintained. I just wish they had more markers and signage to assist players to navigate the course.
