A Fairly Reasonable 9 Hole Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Although this course is only 9 holes long, it offers a decent variety of layouts. Most of the holes have at least a few trees that come into play. Of the ones that don't, there are other obstacles you have to deal with, like bushes, baseball fields, water hazards, and even an electrical pole (the baseball fields are obstacles because they have fences around the outfields, so if you have a bad throw, your disc will either hit the fence or sail over it and land in the outfield). Although the water hazards aren't real big, and some of them aren't real close to the holes, they can still cause problems if you have a bad throw. Also, the length varies somewhat because there are a few short holes and a few somewhat long holes.

Cons:

It's kind of hard to find the first hole, because it isn't marked well, and there are other holes that are easier to see when driving through the big parking lot. There's no signage for any of the holes, and that would've been helpful. The last hole is located a long ways from the first hole, which means if you park near the first hole then when you're done playing you have a long walk back to your car. A few of the holes are a little too short, and what's sad is that there's plenty of room for them to be longer (that would've been nice because then they would've been a little more challenging to play). In fact, most of the holes on this course have room to be longer, which would've been a good idea because a lot of them are mostly open and flat, so increasing their lengths would've them a little more challenging. The sixth hole is a little too easy because the basket is mostly wide open sitting near a group of bushes, but if they were to move it in the middle of those bushes it would make the hole a lot trickier more fun to play (right now those bushes aren't much of a factor). The fifth tee pad is a little awkward because it doesn't face the basket and it's also kind of close to the fourth hole's fairway. The tee pads themselves are a little awkward because they consist of two separate squares of cement, and they also look kind of old. It would be nice if they could be replaced with one solid rectangle of cement. The geese love this park, and because of that there are some areas that can have a lot of goose poop. Also, this course is only 9 holes long, so it doesn't take long to play. There's actually a big area well behind the first hole where they could easily add an extra hole. That would be nice because then there would be an extra hole to play, and also the gap between the first and last holes wouldn't be so big.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, most of these holes are relatively easy, especially for more experienced players. They're not as difficult as they could be, but they're just tricky enough that you still need to be careful with some of your tee shots and approach shots. Otherwise your disc could hit a tree, go in the water, or sail over a fence and land on a baseball field. Also, if you don't like goose poop, then you might have an uncomfortable time playing here, especially in the summer and fall.

Good practice for the locals! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 19, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lamar Park is a large-ish urban park in Wyoming, MI (Grand Rapids area). The park features several of the usual amenities like tennis/basketball courts, a baseball diamond, etc. There is also a 9 hole disc golf course that plays counterclockwise around the park.

The baskets here are the yellow banded DISCatchers. They look like they have been around a few years but are all in good shape. Each hole also has a small cement tee pad. The hole numbers are given in the form of number plates that are bolted down onto the back corners of the pads, similar to the number plates you would buy to attach to the side of your house to display your address. Most holes also have the par as another number bolted down in the other back corner. The pads are in fine shape although the grass is encroaching on them a little bit.

There is a small creek/pond running through the park and the designers used it to make some nice water holes. Water could come into play on holes #3, 4, 5, and 9. For #3 it is on your left, and #5 on your right. On #4 your tee shot has to carry the water, and very errant throws to your right will also find the water. It's an easy carry (probably like 50') but a fun throw, then you'll walk over the creek on a small wooden bridge. Nice hole. #9 is my personal favorite though. On this one there is a pond on your left that has a couple of trees next to it. Plenty of room off to the right, but just a pretty hole to end your round.

Cons:

This park is very flat and open. There aren't any holes that have more than a couple trees or bushes between the tee and basket - and some holes have no obstacles at all. It's so open that wind can be a factor (may be either a pro or con for you).

On holes 4 and 7, errant throws could go over a fence into the outfield of the baseball diamond. I would not play these holes if there was a game or practice going on. This is a popular park in general so if people are picnicking, etc. you may have to skip holes. There are fortunately no blind shots here so safety is on you.

The holes are mostly pretty short, with only a couple eclipsing 300' and one (#7) quite a bit longer. I am suspicious of the distances listed on here, but with no signage I cannot really verify. I think #7 is shorter than the 620' listed, maybe more like 450' or 500'. It's definitely the longest hole on the course though and the only one that can really claim to be called a par 4. I can see maybe #9 but I'm not sure why #3, 5, and 6 are also par 4s. Very generous but even a newer player like myself can shoot under par pretty easily.

There aren't any tee signs. The course flows pretty well once you find the first tee, but use the map here for navigation if needed. The only signage present is at the first tee, where a large plaque warns you that you are responsible for any damage caused to park property or injury caused to bystanders. There is a second sign below this repeating the same warnings in Spanish.

It's difficult to find the first tee. I just updated the exact pin location here so hopefully that will help future DG'ers. It's on the north side of the park along the loop drive, on the south side of the drive, at the west end of the linear parking lot. Look for the sign just mentioned above.

There are multiple parking areas. Two of the parking options are near the 9th basket and near the first tee, but it's a long walk between them so either way you will be doing some walking to start/end your round.

Goose poop everywhere on the holes around the water.

Other Thoughts:

If there were better signage I might bump this review up to a 2.5. This is a nice little city park course. I would call it good for beginners due to the openness, mostly shorter holes, and presence of water to make things interesting but not too difficult to navigate around.

I played here once a few months ago and was not impressed, in part probably due to my frustrations finding the first tee. I live close by so I just went back to play it a second time. I enjoyed my second round much more than my first. If I worked nearby I might think about coming to play regularly on my lunch break. It's a nice spot for the locals but no reason for a visitor to go out of their way to play.

UPDATE January 2022: Nothing here has changed (including my rating), but wanted to add a few notes about winter play. The back part of the park is closed to car traffic in the winter, so you will have to park at the baseball diamond lot (which is near holes 8 and 9) and do a little extra walking if you want to play. Also, with all signage on the pads at ground level it can be difficult to find the pads when they are covered in snow and ice. I would therefore not recommend this one in the winter, unless you already know where the holes are from a previous visit. Overall this isn't a bad 9-holer, and as stated previously I would probably give a 2.5 if they added nice tee signs to all the holes.

Small Park Course Good For Local Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lamar Park is your typical small park 9 hole course sandwiched in between ball fields , the park road and the front entrance to the park . It is situated close to Hwy 131 for a quick in and out round . No kiosk where I could see one . The only standing sign that I could see was the one that marked the start of hole 1's tee pad ( if you were facing the center of the park from the road , it would be about 300 yards and a little to the left ) . The sign gives the rules of the game in both English and Spanish I didn't know disc golf was popular to the general Mexican population , even on a tiny level . Anyway , after studying half the sign , I started playing . You might want to print off a map since there are no signs and no course map in the park . The baskets are the older model discatchers but catch well . The tee pads are in good shape and large enough since only 1 of the holes ( #7 ) is long , 620' . At least there are numbers on the tee pads which show you which hole you are on . #1 goes a little uphill with 1 tree as a slight obstacle . #1 goes back down the hill to the basket somewhat close to a creek . #3 throws back up the hill a little keeping the creek to your left . #4 is a water carry to a basket that is in between 2 outfield fences . Keep your drive low . The water you throw over is close to the pad and maybe 15' wide . No problem. Nice bridge to cross after your drive . . #5 is an uphill shot with some high grass that sits on the edge of the water .#6 would be my signature hole . A drive , open enough , with a bush line way to the right , but with bush obstacles that could catch your disc going down the fairway . The basket ( nice placement ) sits slightly downhill from these . #7 is a 620' heave at the front of the park flanked by a hillside on your right and one of the outfield fences downhill and to the left . No obstruction in front of this one . #8 has a tree that might make you think a little , but will be a level drive . #9 is a great finishing hole . This is the only time you have to walk across the road . Maybe backtracking 20 yards . You don't throw across this pond which is too bad . You will keep the pond to your left and large bushes to your right . Plenty of open air to wedge your drive in between . The basket sits 371' away . Careful not to hit one of the many geese that seem to congregate here near the basket . It is 1 large counter clockwise trip around the front of the park . By yourself , you could complete this in 30 minutes or less if you know the layout . A great course for families , newbies , and casual play . Grass was cut and looks to be well taken care of by the park staff . Plenty of parking near the basket AND also near hole 6 if you want to start there . Bathrooms near hole 1 across the road .

Cons:

#1. Signage . You are never going to be confuse with the basket you are throwing to , but if the grass is left untouched for a couple of weeks , you might not find the tee pads . #2 You might have to sacrifice a hole or 2 from the locals . #s 1,2 and 4 in particular . It is in such a confined space , you could face some park overflow . Be careful and set a good example for all of us . #3 no benches , no signage , but curiously , a large Trash can sits next to #7's tee pad ( What the ?! ? ) . Wind could be a factor on many of these holes since the park is wide open . I don't consider it a con , but some do . Little elevation , but the designer did what he could . #4 Geese look to hang around hole 9 . Their droppings are all around the basket . Not much the park can do about that .

Other Thoughts:

Overall , this is a fun course for the locals to hang out and throw and round or 2 . It's fast play , you won't lose a disc , unless you throw it in the pond on 9 . Plenty of room for the newbies and casuals to air it out a bit without hitting a bunch of trees . A good intro into the sport , or just an after dinner round for the family . My recommendation unless local or sampling this with Johnson or Garfield , would be to leave it alone . No aesthetics would keep a traveler interested enough . It serves it's purpose , and that is to present the game to any interested enough to grab a disc and head down to this small but nice park .There were several players on this course and it was right after a rain .

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Not a whole lot to say about this park other than its a quick nine holes that best suits most players in the early part of the season and anytime need to work on form or a new shot. It does make use of the water on five of the nine holes with four really playing into it.

Cons:

Needs to look at shifting the setup around some. first couple of holes will play into groups of people and even a time or two you will see people using baskets as grills.

Other Thoughts:

I would not go out of my way to play this course if it was not right next to a friends house. How ever if looking for a place to work on drives and form this might be a great place to spend some time at.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

A lot of nice shots. It's not really geared toward one type of shot like some places can be. Water makes it very fun. tree placement on most holes makes it easy for a begginer to learn. A nice long one for people to rip and grip it. Not really busy.

Cons:

Hole 7 has a Baseball Diamond and the road which get in the way(being the lucky guy i am i threw into the road and then from the road to the diamond.) Short and not really dificult for most besides that hole. Hole 2 if you over throw it you'll be in the drink.

Other Thoughts:

Seeing as this is 10 minutes from my work it's definatly a good place to come. It's nice cause theres water and it's really quick. When i went out I played with two guys who know it well so I didn't really get lost(although it's pretty easy to find your way around) When i went I got a new disc cause some guy over threw hole 2 and landed in the back pound and didn't want to get it. So i said if he was gunna lose it i'd grab it and he said that was cool.

Short and Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a well tended, nicely set up course that is great for beginners, practicing parking mid-range shots, or learning to throw rollers. Wide open holes, mininal traffic, and flat terrain keep the frustration level for beginners to a minimum.

Cons:

There's lots of goose poop to avoid, and you really don't want to have to retrieve your discs from this pond. Yuck! Errant shots on holes #6 and #7 could (and do) go over the fence into the baseball diamond.

Other Thoughts:

We played this before heading out to the more strenuous and demanding Johnson Park and had a blast. What a fun little course.....perfect for a warm-up or a quickie, although the walk back to the parking lot seemed to take forever!

Short Game Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice short course to practice midrange and putt shots.
Concrete tee pads are nice, never really had the problem of where am I shooting.

Cons:

Water is nasty, Do not let your disc get in there.
Fence- The Wind grabbed my disc and it barely stayed on my side of the fence so be careful.
Most of the holes are short straight shots that don't offer much challenge.
I'm used to having hole 9 end near the tee of hole 1, this isnt the case. You have to walk pretty far to your car afterwards.
Goose Feces everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

Good for short game practice, but only one hole is long enough for good drives. The course goes around a frequently used park so watch out for people and pets. A sign at tee one says disc golfers are responsible for any damage your discs cause.
