Pros:
+concrete tee pads
+several benches
+great finishing holes 17 & 18, both with water OB and thin fairways
+great variety of hole distances
+grass is regularly mowed
Cons:
-it's in Alabama
-20 holes, but numbered 1-18 with an A hole after 2 and a B hole after 11. It's really not that much of a big task to re-number tee signs within a few years after you add new holes, but then again, it's in Alabama, so maybe it actually is a tall task for the locals after all
Other Thoughts:
This is an ancient course, first marked with wooden poles for targets (I've also heard trash cans were used for targets as well) maybe as far back as the 1970s. I believe by the 1980s this course had pole holes. By the 1990s this course was well-established as the most-used tournament course in Mobile, and it has continued to host big tournaments each and every year. If you've played for big cash in Mobile, you've played at Langan Municipal. By today's standards, it is nothing spectacular, but it's still a great course if you like more open courses where the wind can be a big factor.
There are four holes at this course that are just magnificent. The "A" hole is the first on this list, which is a straight 330' or so fairway but with water OB on the entire left side and road OB on most of the right side--when the wind is up the A hole is tough. Hole 8 is a par 4 that's downhill with big pine trees to maneuver around, again, made a lot more fun and challenging when the wind is blowing. The finishing holes 17 and 18 really end the course on a high note. 17 is a par 4 that has an OB creek running along the entire left side, and the fairway gets narrower as it approaches the basket which is placed underneath a huge and beautiful and shady oak tree. Then 18's green is a small island that tests your approach shot after teeing off out of a tight tunnel.
If we could rate courses more precisely on this website that is as dated as the tee signs on this course, this course would be a 3.75 in my book. But since the options are 4.0 or 3.5, I'm rating it 3.5, I think because I've just played this course so many times that it's sorta like an old song that I once loved but after hearing it 800 times on the classic rock station, I'd prefer something new.
