Ace runs and deuces, anyone?

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Right in the middle of town, this nine-hole course plays just fine for the casual to recreational player, with its DisCatcher baskets usually being situated in positions to force a little shot shaping challenge. Appropriately short, the holes range from 172 to 265 feet, with only two being significantly more than 200', this is a pretty little park with some nice sparse trees and good maintenance. I still think it was fun as a chance to get out for a stretch during a long road trip that happened to come through Nacogdoches (and you can't miss an opportunity to bag a course in a town with a unique name, can you?)

Cons:

They've actually broken a few of my cardinal safety rules here, which affect the rating: holes 3,4,5,8& 9 either cross or play too close to the paved path; the chain link fence and crumbling cliff edge just to the right of hole 7 are actually hazardous, while the possibility of losing a disc in the creek on 5&9 is high for the intended audience; and the path between 7&8 crosses the 3rd fairway. The total lack of signage at the overgrown toe board, natural turf and dirt tees on this completely flat course make navigation reliant completely on the map, where you'll note a lengthy walk across the park between holes 5 and 6.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 4 definitely has two baskets in view. Throw to the one on the left.

Pros:

The course is easy to find off of the main road, and it is a course that plays in a small park. It has brand new DisCatcher baskets, which in my opinion are the premier baskets. The course is short enough that players can get a load of birdies but challenging enough that it will be tough to birdie them all in a row.

This course is a better introduction to the sport than Pioneer and the Lake course. And it is much shorter than Pecan. This is a great course to warm up at or get a few quick rounds in at lunch. It is also a good course to try out new throwing putters or mid ranges as the longest hole is about 250'.

Cons:

Sadly, this park is not a great location for a course. The course plays next to a walking trail almost in its entirety, and the trail is used by park go-ers. A hole also plays near a playground and the small creek. In my opinion, a course that has an objective of introducing new players, water hazards should not be as prevalent as they are here.

Navigation is a bit of an issue, and the next tee pad is not always obvious. A good tip that I found was that the tee pad will always be facing the number on the yellow band of the basket. Also, you can use the map here on DGCR. The tee pads are just wooden blocks in the ground that are not visible from far away.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fine course. DGCR says that a course rated 1.5 is "Passable," and that is what this course is. Nacogdoches has great courses and all of them are great plays. This is a course that you can play very quickly with one or two discs just to knock it off your list. If you have time, play them all. This one should not be on the top of your priority list though.
