The Mendocino School District Maintenance Man Passed Away In 19 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Mendocino Maintenance Man Passed Away In 1994 and no-one has noticed his absence. That might be the last time the Mendocino athletic fields has seen any maintenance work. I found this to be a really depressing state of affairs here and that includes their once proud disc golf course. Every bench, sign, basket, pole, blade of grass, track, and tree is scummy and rotting from the ever present salty air blowing in from the Pacific. There are piles of debris everywhere, broken this and discarded that. The running track is like a sandbox.

The course was once a decent little throw but now it's in the same state of disrepair as everything else here. The baskets are crusty from the salt air with grass growing up through them and some offer a little helping of bird crap, too. The signs, if you can find one are just barely legible. The on-line map helps a little.

It's too bad because the course starts out with a bang! # 1 is a cool throw from high up in the parking lot all the way across the the field to a new green DGA basket 325' away. This is the basket stuck in the bushes covered with bird guano.

I never found the # 2 tee. The # 2 basket is near the 50 yard line. The # 3 basket is down in the corner of the end zone. You will be rewarded with awesome views of the Pacific here. The # 4 tee sign is pulled out.

The front nine plays around the track and then the baseball field in a clockwise direction, then you reverse it for the back nine.

Cons:

Everything here is dingy, grubby, unkept, unimproved on, rusty, crusty, broken, discarded, pooped on, pissed on and generally ugly.

The gentle ocean breeze was a fricking Pacific Ocean, gale force, level V typhoon.

Baskets are salted, crusted over, bird drop strewn, tipped over relics.

Signs are old and missing and almost illegible.

Other Thoughts:

It's kind of disheartening to think that this course was once shiny new and someone's pride and passion. A lot of work and fundraising went into the building of it. Someone here got some folks excited about disc golf. Lots of players had the thrill of # 1's Top of the World throw. They may never had been to DeLaveague but they had their own little piece of heaven right here at Mendocino High School.

Someone has to take some pride in their school and start to clean this eyesore area up. Maybe a class project or something. Haul away a few truckloads of debris. Maybe some paint?
