Shady Pines, With Extra Shady-ness

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.243 Rating) A pines course with 18 tees and 9 baskets.
- GAMEPLAY - To me the best thing going for Morehart is the gameplay. It's woods golf with fairway options. Some may argue that a few lines are too poke and hope, especially from the back tees. Many of the basket placements are guarded and require some thought on how to attack correctly. There are some multiplay holes that can be reached by bombers that have divine luck. The front 9 seemed most ideal for MA3s, while the back tees will intrigue MA2s. Those who hate heavily wooded courses will disagree with me pro-ing this aspect.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - There are some hits and misses on this category, but the nice course map posted by the parking lot, partially forgives some of my grievances. The map appears to be too scale and has distances and pars listed. I laughed at their goof on the par total. They tallied a par 57 with four par 4s and 14 par 3s. The tee signage is nice too, but a quarter of it was missing for my fall 2023 visit. No directional cues between holes, but all one has to do is look at the map if they'd taken a picture of it.
- AMENITIES - In addition to the signage, there are adequately sized concrete tees and DISCatcher baskets. So, the basics are covered well here. Plus, there are a handful of benches spaced throughout and a practice basket. The park also has a shelter with picnic tables.
- QUICK PLAY - I logged 27 minutes on the front tees.

Cons:

A solid course overall, with only minor blemishes.
- 9 BASKETS - Morehart is billed as an 18-hole course, but it's really a two-tee, nine-fairways course. The shortest tee per hole is numbered 1 thru 9, and the longest tee per hole is labeled 10 thru 18. It didn't fully feel like 18 to me, but if I lived near-by, I'd likely throw both loops routinely. I did appreciate that a majority of the long pads felt different and often used different lines.
- SHADY - The park felt somewhat abandoned, despite some nice aspects. There was a tricked-out pony car in the parking lot getting numerous 2-minute visits by other cars. It did not feel safe even in the middle of the day that I was here.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored this aspect a touch below average, but I should have had it slightly above average. There are some issues holding it back. The park setting is moderately to heavily wooded tall pines with constant mild elevation change. Maintenance is lacking unfortunately, and there was a lot of trash present. The issues could easily be rectified if the City decides to invest in some upkeep and police presents.

Other Thoughts:

On paper and in pictures, Morehart is a solid 2.5 typical course to me. Unfortunately, there are enough correctable issues that I've dropped it to a 2.25 ratings tweener. Hopefully the City is able to make some adjustments and get this place shining again. Anyways, considering the shady-ness factor, I would not recommend throwing here solo. Perhaps there are less issues early in the morning when the clowns are still sleeping. Could be good for small leagues if they can establish a base of 8 to 12 consistent players. The course reminded me of places such as Chapman Pines in Huntsville Alabama, Hindman Park in Little Rock, B Cordell in Fayetteville NC and Henry Horton South of Nashville.

First impressions not good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Not many places to loose a disc.
- Shaded
- Park for the kiddies to play

Cons:

- 2 holes play one basket.
- Indication of where 1st hole is located is lacking
- Unkept grounds

Other Thoughts:

We got to the park and our first impression right off the bat was the high grass throughout the entire park, even around the play areas. We drove to a few parking areas and made an (albeit small) effort to locate hole 1. Walking a few holes to determine the start indicated that there wasnt a very logical progression of holes. The general feel for the place, combined with no clear indication where the course started, as well as the lack of logic all led to a very quick determination to move to the next course.

Don't waste your time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Not a lot of rough to worry about except for hole 4. The signs and new tee pads are also really nice and make it easier to locate the holes.

Cons:

Where to start? The layout isn't in the least logical. After you get done with a hole, you start heading to the next logical one only to find that it's not the next one. For example, hole 15 is where 5 should be. You then have to search for a few minutes. Very confusing. Parts of the park are pretty swampy and remain wet regardless of recent rainfall. Broken shards of glass can be found everywhere, especially on the fairways, so watch your step. Some holes are only 195 feet and play way too easily and then all of a sudden there is a 500 ft par 5. If you like getting frustrated, try playing this course.

Other Thoughts:

The brush on the course needs to be cleaned up. Since the course is new, the pathways aren't well defined and you find yourself tripping over branches and all sorts of stuff on the ground. One cause of concern I saw are the large piles of wood stacked up. These definitely need to be cleaned up before the snakes come out!

Beginner/Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set in a small park that is completely filled with tall, bare trees of varying thicknesses. There is a path and a basketball court, but the disc golf is well separated.
- Almost every hole has a tough path to the basket, due to the large number of trees. A few holes do have well defined lines, with plenty of punishment for straying too far out of the fairways. Two noticeable RHBH anhyzers on #2 and #9, a forced hyzers on #4, and plenty of safe straight shots.
- #4 gives a different look; the fairway is bordered by thick rough on the right, and the forest on the left. Good shot placement is key, especially from the long tee.
- Elevation changes come into play on a few holes, like an elevated basket on #7 and a sloping fairway on #2.
- Excellent range of hole lengths, on either set of tees. If desired, you can have a 400', and 500' and a 600' hole in one round. Overall, the alternate tees add significant difficulty and change the lines up very well.
- A few protected baskets, there are places where a close shot is still obstructed, forcing a tough putt.
- Great teepads, baskets, and signage. Navigation is pretty easy, though the alternate teepads can be a tad confusing.

Cons:

- There is not too much to the different holes, it is basically just trees upon trees. The land is relatively flat, and there a small ditch/creek, but otherwise the trees are the only real obstacles. Lots of holes feel the same, due to the constant terrain.

Other Thoughts:

- This course makes fantastic use of the available land and terrain, with plenty of length and difficulty. Many holes from the longs require a great balance of length and accuracy; trees can provide some nasty kicks for any slightly errant shot. Still, the shots are pretty straightforward and can feel very similar. An experienced player will appreciate the tough longer holes, but will probably not find much excitement.
