Other Thoughts:

Overall this course was reasonable. It had great aspects about it. It's a great course to develop you're throws requiring accuracy and you get to work your mid/putt game.

But the negatives highly out weighed the positives.

The course is not kept well and the pictures that you see on this website, need to be updated. (I would totally do it but I don't plan on going back out there anytime soon) It seems that after 10 or so years since the course was constructed, other trees and branches, that weren't a part of the original course design, have contributed to the difficulty and challenge of the course. Lines that you once could take are difficult to see through, much less throw! I think all this could be revived if a work day could be assembled.

There are tee signs that are missing. Finding the next hole isn't that difficult but hole 15 was challenging to find.

The biggest problem with this course is the way the course will stay with you after you play it. I'm talking about poison ivy/oak/sumac and ticks. The vines are everywhere and I'm sure the ticks are too. I found one on me. IF you happen to be a recreational player, such as myself, and happen to hit a tree or two throwing for your line, such as myself, you'll need to chase a disc or two, such as myself. The under bush is dense and it'll cover your disc and makes finding it challenging.

So for me this was the killer. That I could potentially end up with poison ivy/oak/sumac or some irreversible disease from a tick bite. This unkempt course will nevertheless, put you in those situations with a higher probability. For me, I'm just out here trying to have some fun, not make my life more challenging than it already is.

the better of the 2 courses in Oxford 2+ years drive by

Pros:

- Disc golf on campus. I would have loved it when I went to school!
- Some nice holes since the 2011 upgrade.
- 18 + holes

Cons:

- No risk/reward design elements to be found. For the most part, if you don't birdie you can definitely par.
- Many really rough, uneven tee boxes.
- The few holes which feature challenging design elements favor RHBH players.
- There's a "goofy golf" feel to some of the older, wooded holes, like they didn't take into consideration how discs actually fly. There are bizarre short doglegs that don't make for natural shot shaping.

Other Thoughts:

They've got a decent location for a course. Also, they apparently have the permission to cut some trees, and manpower with which to do it. They desperately need a pro from Tupelo, MS to come over for the day and help this course with some design. Tupelo is about the best place in the state to live and play disc golf. They need some of that great design magic here at the University. There's a lot of potential here.

BTW, bjreagh's signature hole is gone with the redesign due to campus construction. It's really a shame, but with the addition of the newer holes that play around the south and west sides of the fields, the course is better overall than it was.

Pros:

Ole Miss is an 18 hole course with excellent baskets. The course plays mostly in the woods with a handful of more open holes. Elevation is used effectively to add the challenge of what is a fairly short and easier course. The wooded holes can be tight, but there is usually some semblance of a fairway. A practice basket is isolated in an open area across from the parking lot near (but not in the way of) hole 1.

The signature hole is #14- you tee off from a hill, throw out into the open, OVER THE ROAD, and up to the basket located on a hill on the other side! (Be sure to look both ways before teeing off!!!)

This is a great course for the college students to get a round in between/after classes.

There is large parking area. Very nice restrooms nearby. The parking lot appeared to be open parking for all- that is no parking permit/permission required and no tickets/tow aways/the boot, etc. as is the case for some college courses.

Cons:

The natural tee pads are pretty worn. I played after a rain and some tee pads were mud puddles. The course is pretty easy for the seasoned disc golfer as most of the holes are pretty short. There is an ROTC course mixed in the with the course on some of the holes, and could interfere if it were in use. (I guess it could add to the challenge of climbing the wall if discs were being throw at them while they climb!)

The biggest con for me was the high volume of quick playing, 1 disc, college kids in large groups. I have never seen a group of 7-8 people play so quickly! Many times they would throw into you while you putting (and remember, this is a short course!) I guess maybe they had to get their rounds in quickly before their next class or the frat parties begin! I felt rushed the entire time. *Note- I played on a weekday afternoon.

Other Thoughts:

The course is set in a piece of land that is off the main campus, so you are not actually playing around the buildings like is the case on many college courses.

There are some decent holes (1,3,14,15,18), but the other 13 holes are your typical short, tight woods holes. Again, this is a great course for the college kids to have a place to play, but if you are a serious disc golfer looking to play on the road, skip Ole Miss; there are plenty of great courses in northern/central Mississippi to choose from.

*Directions note- If you go by the DGCR directions, turn left at the soccer complex like it says and stay on this road for a ways (it looks like it goes nowhere, but eventually you get to the intramural fields and disc golf parking lot.) I would recommend coming in off of Hwy. 278 and exit right onto Jackson Ave. Then turn right onto Mall Drive and the parking lot will be straight ahead at the sharp curve in the road.
