Good College Campus Course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

The trying part of playing the 23 hole Ole Miss Course was finding the thing . I couldn't find the intramural fields , my directions failed , and the students on campus were oblivious to the course . Someone finally helped me ( Thanks ) and pointed me to the back left of the campus . Finding #1 wasgoing to be a trick , and since I found a couple of baskets and a tee pad , I wandered up in the woods and started at 15 . Ole Miss has the older Chainstar baskets , but they catch well and are numbered . The tees are a mix of cement and rubber mats , which look like they can get slippery and dangerous , especially in the woods .But the University Of Mississippi or Southern Nationals Disc Golf did a great job of cleaning the course up and changing the tee pads from the old framed dirt tees to the present concrete and rubber The course DOES have great signage with hole number , distance and flight path . The reason I say it's great is because under the description is a little metal extension that says Aces , and people can put their names down if they ace a certain hole . Fantastic idea . There are several trash cans and benches along the course route . I also like the idea that the course is 23 holes ( 23 ? Who does that ? Ole Miss Does !!!!! ) There is a kiosk at hole #1 , and according to a sign , a new #1 hole . The course wanders in and out of the woods . It plays tricky hyzers and anhyzers along fence lines and tree lines . There is one throw away hole that I remember . I think it is #4 which is a straight shot filler hole right before going up into the woods on your left . There is a lot of elevation here , and Ole Miss uses most of it . After going up and down 5-9 on the left woods , you cross the road and go to 10-18 in the second set of woods . . These holes go up and down and are basically short , except #15 , which pops out of the woods and throws along a brush line 265' to a basket tucked into a part of the woods , There are nice tight but fair lines to these particular holes . After #18 , a 171' downhill throw to a basket with small trees guarding it ,Throw past and you might earn a 4 . you cross the road to #19 , which is the first tee pad you see when driving down to the intramural fields . It is an uphill grade 342 ' throw to the basket which is sitting right inside the woods line . The road and the hill the road sits on is to your immediate left , and a brush line greets you on the right . You will then wander in to holes 20-23 in still a new part of the woods . 20-22 are shorter more precise holes that will favor control , like most of the holes on 11-18 . #23 is where I guess you should walk back to the kiosk and hole #1 . It is more of an open air shot that wraps around a large bush and goes hard right . You actually see a basket directly in front of you with the bush guarding it to your right , but that basket happens to be the putting basket . I guess you warm up there before walking the fence line next to the intramural fields . I hear that this course is still a work in progress , and if that is so , it's coming along well . several memorable holes are on this course . #19 as mentioned , #23 as mentioned , and a great finishing hole , #1 , a good right to left coming out of the woods to the basket . #7 a downhill right to left shot , #8 195' back up the hill , the #9, a downhill door shot out of the woods and to the immediate left to a basket buried behind some bushes .. My signature holes would be the combos of #9 followed by #10 , a tight lane straight shot to an elevated basket on top of a giant piece of cement pipe.

Cons:

#1 trying to find the course in the first place . I was over so much of the campus that I was issued a student I D . Some signs directing you to the course would be great , as also where the course starts . #2 Maybe some clearing of foliage . The Disc Risk is high is parts of this course . You don't want to turn off the students from burning a little steam by losing a $20 disc in thick brush . #3 The course can be a fright to play if muddy because of the dirt and the elevation . Make sure you spray some bug repellent during the summer months , and check for ticks when finished . also beware of the poison ivy and such in the brush . Lots of it . #4 A couple of the holes , #'s 1 , 2 ,3, 4 and 23 are chancy to land into the intramural fields . I don't know how much they are used , but ,,,,, Don't start a fight with a bad drive . Be smart .

Other Thoughts:

ole Miss is not a championship caliber course in disguise , nor does it pretend to be . I have been on many college campus courses in my travels , and this one has come a long way and is very unique . Not flashy , it still gives you a dose of woods with tight lines , keeps the average student engaged by not clobbering him with long unattainable holes , and will give you a good workout with its elevation changes . If I was back in college again , I would enjoy having a course like this on it . I might even start up a league . AND , the fact it is an odd numbered 23 holes make me like it even more . I would have really liked to have made it a 3.25 rating , but I had to round this up because of the long road upwards that it has endured . Thanks , U Miss Campus , for letting me play your course .
