Good Beginner Course or Quick Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Easy to navigate.
Good use of OB and mandatory throws. You have to know how to throw fading to the left and right.
Nicely kept w/nice tee blocks, signs, and baskets.
Hard to lose discs.

Cons:

Very crowded.
All the baskets can be reached in one throw by a descent player. Good and bad I guess. Not challenging, but at least it's a good opportunity for an ace.

Other Thoughts:

Ultimately a great course for beginners or players looking for a quick round and chance to work on their short game. Expect to play it a couple times since it is only 9 very short holes (longest is 300 ft).

Orchard Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 12, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Orchard Park is a beautiful nine hole disc golf course located in Hillsboro, Oregon. This park has ample parking, most days, and an extremely clean bathroom near the entrance. This course is remarkably clean and well taken care of, with locals working hard on the surrounding landscape by planting trees, bushes, and flowers to brighten up the area. Woodchips have also been spread out along the pathways and pins, giving the course an updated look. Tee signs are in great shape, with updated distance, par, and a map showing major obstacles and pin locations. Tee pads are all cement, well maintained, and are all the appropriate size. The Mach III baskets are well maintained and in excellent shape!

This disc golf course was very straight forward, with good flow, and is very easy to navigate. The course was designed having the holes looping around the park counter clockwise, with a balanced shot selection off the tee and a few mandos and OB's to make things interesting. This course is best suited for novice and intermediate players alike, with few obstacles and wide open fairways. This course is great for new players because there is little chance to lose discs.

Cons:

This course, although ideal for those learning the game, presents little challenge for advanced and open players. Most would find themselves shooting well under, trying to ace run the majority of the holes. Although this course would be fun for anyone, it would most likely get old quickly.

Another issue I saw when I was there was how quickly the course got crowded. Because there were so many playing for the first time, during their lunch break, or just playing a quick round while traveling through, the wait time became increasingly worse.

Last, the walking paths that meander through the course could be an issue. With pedestrians constantly walking through, many times players will have to wait and watch out on several of the holes along the way.

Other Thoughts:

The designers for Orchard Park made a short challenging course with the room they had allotted, and designed a course that was perfect for all ages, especially families. This course was easily accessible from the freeway, and is the perfect spot to stretch and get a quick round in before heading toward Horning's Hideout.

Relaxed, fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Signage is good, tees are large and well maintained with few hazards if you overstep your drive. The course is well-maintained with good use of OB and mando trees. Left-to-right playing holes make shot/disc selection a factor.

Cons:

Somewhat crowded, short. OB can creep up on you for a couple holes. Few holes share fairways and you can encounter other groups playing in to your drives. Walkers seem oblivious to the danger of discs.

Other Thoughts:

Close to MAX so mass transit to this course from the city is relatively painless.

Great Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

An open course with short holes for beginners. Very clean and well kept. Concrete tees. Holes are easy to find and are well marked.

Cons:

A lot of traffic. Being a small course, there can be a lot of pedestrians and other disc golfers, so you may need to wait or be careful when you throw. Advanced players may find this course boring due to it being very open and the holes are pretty short.

Other Thoughts:

A fun little course for beginners or for those who want a quick 9 hole game.

Great Lunch-Hour Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Close-in makes it convenient to zip over there during the lunch hour to get in a quick round. Park is well manicured, so you don't have to do a lot of hunting to find discs. Fairly level terrain won't have you all sweaty by the time you head back to the office.

Cons:

Short course - 9 holes, each less than 300 ft. Most drives setup for birdies. Lots of foot-traffic on the trails surrounding the course, and if you're not careful, you could potentially lodge a disc in the roof of some walker's mouth. In the winter time, the course tends to have lousy drainage between holes 2 and 3, so the ground is a bit swampy/mucky. Because this is a fairly novice level course, there also tends to be a lot of slower traffic and folks with their little kids out playing. Expect to do a lot of waiting on sunny weekend days, or even weekdays when the kiddos don't have school.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great little course for a lunch-time quickie. I wouldn't count it for more than that. My office is close by, so I walk down there to play almost daily. It's good for a quick round.

Orchard Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Orchard is the perfect place to get mom and dad, your siblings and kids out on the course for a fun and quick round of family friendly golf. Navigation is about as easy as it comes and the park is in great condition with even walking paths covered with wood chips. Baskets, pads and tee signs are in great shape along with some of the more cleaner bathrooms I've seen in a public city park. It's not entirely open either, there are some trees that will challenge your tee shots.

Cons:

This is a place where any advanced player will be throwing way under par every time they come out and the baskets are littered with ace signings. There is a major walking path near many holes so you may have to wait for people sometimes. It has a small parking lot and during beautiful weekends I'm not sure where you are going to park.

Other Thoughts:

This is an excellent course for showing off the sport to someone new or for people with exercise restrictions who can't walk or play long periods. It's well maintained and I think I would feel comfortable playing in bare feet. Also I went when it was rainy for the last couple days and while the other area courses are under water this course was relatively dry.

Cons:

-Very busy in the summer time

Other Thoughts:

For what it is its a nice course. Its a good place to take somebody for the first time. If you live or work close by its worth checking out but beyond that it can become a real bore. If your on the westside of Portland and want to play a pitch & put just keep driving and hit Hornings Highland Course

Just short of good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Not complicated/ easy to navigate
- Fun, short holes make for a relaxed and enjoyable round.
- Baskets, tees, and grounds are all maintained extremely well.

Cons:

- Although the course is relaxed, it also isn't very challenging either.
- Most of the holes can be reached by advanced players with a putter or mid.

Other Thoughts:

I would recommend this course to a beginner or someone fairly new to the game, but anyone semi-advanced will find this course to be unexciting and dull.

There isn't that much else to say about this course. It's short and not very technical.

Better than its rating. 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Well maintained grounds and equipement. Easy to find. Easy to navigate. THPRD did a great job with their signs and tees.

Cons:

Most of the holes are fairly short and not terribly technical. Experience players can play the whole course with one disc (Buzz or Coyote).

Other Thoughts:

Another short course in town that is great to introduce new players, discs, or techniques on. It is also a great place to get your first ACE as there are several "short" holes.

Fun little city park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Great signage
- Cement tee pads
- Meticulously maintaned course. Mowed grass, trash cans everywhere
- Well placed trees that will really make the course better in 5-10 years when they mature fully.
- Easy to navigate
- Pretty setting
- Wood chips around all the baskets

Cons:

- No real cons. It is what it is. A cool little 9 hole city park that everyone should be grateful exists for the community
- Could get dangerous on the last few holes with overlap with walking paths and conflicts with other park users on busier weekend days

Other Thoughts:

- Ideal place to introduce friends or family to the game. 9 holes, easy to navigate, no real risk of losing discs. Just good family fun

Fun little course... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very good use of available space
Very well maintained
Very clean
Nice vibe
Good signage
Great tees
Great baskets
Awesome course for beginners
A superb place to introduce newbies to the sport - I saw a group of six start after us and 2 were players and the other 4 were playing for the first time--how cool is that :)
Trees planted strategically to create obstacles...as they mature, they will really change the dynamics of the course
There is some very nice wooded areas next to the course that may allow them to expand...hole 7 is a great example of the potential of this area
A good place to play with shots that you want to work on, like playing the WHOLE course forehanded

Cons:

The cons that I found are not a fault of the design but more a result of the limited space and terrain
It could get a little "dangerous" if crowded...walking paths throughout the course and some of the fairways overlap or are very close to each other

Other Thoughts:

This is a great warm up type of course and if you are doing a trip to Horning's, this is worth a stop and a few minutes of your time

Nice quick, relaxed course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- short and sweet. great for a quick 9 on the way home.
- Park is clean and well-maintained
- perfect flat course for the novice.

Cons:

- Hole number 2 needs a new sign. the hole has been moved but the same sign was used.
- no elevation changes, except on hole 7.
- minor nit: course is "stuffed" into a small city park.

Other Thoughts:

There's really not a lot to say about this course. I use it often because it's a mile from my office. It's 9 holes, nothing over 300. I usually play two rounds in just over an hour.

There is one hole in the woods (#7, my favorite) with a slight elevation change, and the rest are flat.

This is a very popular and somewhat crouded course, yet everyone is relaxed and friendly, and ready to allow you to play through if they lose a disc or want to take a break.

The course does feel a little cramped at times. Discs(mine included) often land on the wrong fairway.

fun warm up course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 15, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Extremely clean park!!! Very well manicured grass and trees/ shrubbery. Wonderful warm up/ practice course for advanced players... and an even better course for beginners. I can spend all day on hole #7 as it's a blind basket during summer time great for tomahawks and curved slices to the right @ a distance of 172 feet its an ideal hole for aces. The tee boxes are extremely comfortable w/ provided maps/markers trash buckets and a small broom to dust it off. Most importantly it is almost impossible to loose a disc on this course. ( if you do loose one... just think of it as a contribution to a beginner player as a gift )... Restrooms provided during summer time operation. Great baskets!!!

Cons:

Many Pedestrians and dogs!!! For advanced players it's an almost expected birdie on the holes if you can't ace them. Gets crowed w/ a lot of families that don't let you play through. ( but in a positive way of thinking forgive them as they are learning how to play ). Small parking area and It was somewhat confusing to locate my 1st time.

Other Thoughts:

I live w/in walking distance of "greenway" and it is a short drive for me to "orchard" so if located in down town Beaverton it's fun to start here @ "orchard" hop on hwy 26 to "lunch time" then settle @ "greenway" for a days worth of playing (for me). I think the next closest parks from "orchard" are 2 courses located in forest grove ( I have no reviews for them as I haven't played them yet ) but I know they have one @ mc minimans pub so if you're a drinker it might be in your interest to hit up that one or viseversa.

Mid range practice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2006 Played the course:never

Pros:

Excellent course for beginners or for people working on new shots (forehand, thumbers, anny, hyzers, etc.). The course is wide open so you can throw virtually any shot on every hole. I like to play the entire round with a Roc or Aviar to work on my short game. The tee pads are HUGE and the park is extremely clean & well manicured. Picnic tables and a nature trail will give the non-DG members of a family something to do while you play a quick 9.

Cons:

This is not a competition level course. Dogs are often off-leash (can be an issue for some people). Bathrooms are locked during the winter months. Ultra-large after work groups and large groups of beginners are prevalent during the summer months.

Other Thoughts:

Do NOT go over the fence to get your disc... the neighbors will return your plastic to HPRD (near the Hillsboro stadium).

Weekly doubles during the summer are good practice because you MUST birdie everything. When you play a difficult course, those <250ft approach shots can be thrown with a high degree of confidence.

Pros:

Nice clean park, always kept up nicely.
Good baskets, tee signs, and now, new tee pads.
holes 8 and 9 are interesting and challenging for many players.
hole 7 is a unique shot into a very small protected green.
Restrooms (clean!!)
Weekly doubles league through the summer (Tuesday nights)
Wind can add a much needed challenge factor.

Cons:

Very simple, only 9 holes.
Flat, on the whole the course is rather unremarkable.
Not very challenging.

Other Thoughts:

Orchard park is a charming 9 hole course, it's great for beginners and shines a good light on the game of disc golf for newer players, what with the clean look and general lack of trash or crime. I really only come out to Orchard for the weekly league but people living on the west side of Portland really should check it out. Folks just passing through would be better of at courses like Pier or Milo.

Ultimate Yuppie Course! 2+ years

This might be the world's cleanest course. Some of the brand new tee pads have another ring of bark built around them. The baskets are new. The holes are short, easy with little chance of a lost disc. It would be the perfect course to introduce a newbie to the game.

Cons:

Very little challenge for advanced players. No holes to really air it out on. I can see it getting really crowded.

Weekly doubles during summer.

Cons:

VERY short holes.
Boring for advanced DGers.
Very little challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Orchard is one of the best places to take you friends who are interested in trying DG out. The holes are very short and don't require much skill.

That being said, if you are an advanced disc golfer, this course will probably be boring after the second or third round. Unless you spend all your time trying to ace the holes.
