South Metro Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good mix of shots from open to tightly wooded, righty's and lefty's,
Concrete Tees
Good use of available elevation
Multiple and well marked tee pads for every pin
Benches on many holes
Very well maintained with mowed fairways in the Summer and shoveled tees in the Winter
Good signage
Layout does a nice job of avoiding the pedestrian path that runs through the course

Cons:

Occasional back ups due to multiple pads for every pin
Awkward transition from 9/19 to 10/20
Lacks a risk/reward hole
Needs more trash cans

Other Thoughts:

Redoak Park could very well be a case study for making the most with what you have and stands as a real credit to the Burnsville disc golf club. Situated on a small parcel of land the course feels much bigger due mainly to use of multiple tee pads for each pin. On seven of the ten pins the change of tees greatly alters your drive while only three (1/11,4/14,6/16) feel redundant due to changes in length only. The course flows well from hole to hole with the exception of the transition from 9/19 to 10/20 which requires a switch back down the fairway of 9/19 and then requires the player to cross in front of one or both tees on the fairway of 10/20. The moderate length puts Redoak within the range of beginners while it's technical features offers the advanced player many opportunities to hone their skills. The course is constantly being improved upon with new amenities seeming to appear with each new visit. It's hard to have a bad day at Redoak and is a must play if you're in the south metro. Also check out the Rack Shack on Cliff road on you're way out for some tasty post-round chow.

Great course in the south Metro 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

20 holes, 10 baskets. Dual Cement tees on every hole, all provide different lines and shots. Gorgeous course, nice foliage all over, there are uphill shots and down hill shots, tight shots and open shots. Nothing super long (nothing over about 450) but very solid course. You will use every shot in your bag at least once here.

Cons:

10 baskets. Can get tight if busy as the people playing 14 are shooting at the same basket the people playing 4 are. Not much space to expand so this is the best way to get more holes in, but if the course is really busy it could be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice course in the south Metro. Far better than Shakopee Lions park. I would play this course quite a bit if it wasn't a long drive away.

It's just like 20 holes, only with half the baskets 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of elevation and trees
-Concrete tees
-Nicely maintained
-Good baskets

Cons:

-No multi-shot holes

Other Thoughts:

This course has 10 baskets with two tees per hole. The tees are numbered such that you would play one set the first time around and then the other set the second time for a total of 20 holes. There are a bunch of fun shots to be had on this course as you throw up, down and across the varied landscape. The course flows very well from one hole to the next as there are well-defined trails connecting them. While there is a multi-use recreation path that winds through the park, the course does a good job of avoiding it. I found it strange the decision to make it 10 holes instead of the standard 9. This might have allowed one or two par 4 holes on the course and then used the the extra one as a practice basket. That aside, it's a very enjoyable course to play.

Great Course; Lots of Fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- New concrete tee boxes
- Multiple tee boxes expands a 10-hole course to a 20-hole course
- Very well maintained
- Elevation and woods, as well as a sumac rough on a few holes
- Logical progression of hole (signs popinted you to the right spots and the start of the next hole was generally close to the end of the last one)

Cons:

- A few holes have both tee boxes with a few feet of each other (could be more creative)
- Possibility to play a hole at the same time as somebody else if you don't pay attention and are playing the other tee box
- Hole 9/19 requires walking back down the fairway a little to get to 10/20. (have to watch for the next group)

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the course. There's enough variety in distances and obstacles to be a really fun course. The grounds are very clean and it appears the owner takes a lot of pride in the course. I'll be playing this one again.

Well Kept 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Very well kept course
-Good use of elevation changes
-Friendly locals all the time
-Good maximization of land alloted for course
-Good pin placements
-Natural tees are fairly good even in poor conditions (Cement is going in soon)
-Dual tee pads making for 20 holes
-Fairways are absolutely immaculate

Cons:

-Tee pad for 8 is always a mess, good or bad weather conditions
-Dual tee pads on some holes just adds a little length, doesn't alter shot lines much (1/11, 4/14, 6/16, 8/18)
-There are a few holes where the rough could be thinned a little

Other Thoughts:

-I would like to see more trash cans placed along the course, as of now there are 3 (1/11, 4/14, 9/19)
-It can get crowded in the afternoon, so if you want a quick round play earlier (3:00 pm or earlier, crowds usually start around 3:30-4)
-You can play this course relatively quick

All in all, this is a great course for the space it has.

Nice Wooded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Great Scenery
- Nice challenge with good sized hills and lots of trees
- Tee boxes well marked

Cons:

- Was crowded. Was 5th group in line to go at 7:00 PM
- No Distance/par markings at the holes
- Some of the tee boxes were slick with mud
- Back 10 holes are almost pointless. Most just add 20 feet or so to the front 10.

Other Thoughts:

A very nice course nestled in the woods. It's a tough course if you have trouble staying on or near the fairway.

Long Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Because they put in two tee boxes for every hole there is a total of 20 holes to play. Nice mix of left and right handed shots as well as long and short.

Cons:

It is nice that there are 20 possible holes to play, but that doesn't leave room for shorter tee boxes when I take my wife out.

Other Thoughts:

Signs with par to go with distance would be nice.

One of my new Favs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

My favorite part of this course is the big trees and narrow fairways. Even on the few holes that are out in the open, the fairways are groomed to be about 30 ft across. The pin placements seem to be well thought out and not just slapped into a bunch of trees, and the slight elevation changes can become a challenge. This is a very enjoyable course to play for players of different skill. Also, this course does not seem to get as much traffic as others in the area, which to me is an added bonus.

Cons:

The dirt tee boxes can get a bit muddy, but I read a review that said that will change.

Other Thoughts:

Keep an eye on your drives till they finish here because once you get off the fairway it can be a jungle.

Top Notch Local Course!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has come a LONG way... So far this yr the updates are: new benches, new signage, new hole (makes it 20 instead of 18 now), and lots of upkeep (thx to Steve). CEMENT TEE PADS WILL BE IN THIS SUMMER!!!!! This is a very fun course to play. Many different types of shots and distances. I'd have to say, out of all the courses w/in reasonable driving distance this is definitely one of the best out there w/ all the improvements that have been made.

Cons:

~ Dirt tees (cement will be in this summer though)
~ no "john" (not a big issue though)
~ no water fountain

Other Thoughts:

COME PLAY HERE!!!! You won't regret it....

Tough 9 holer, er... 18? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've played this course many times over the summer and it is still one of the hardest 9 pin courses I've played. What I really like about it is that you can play through it like an 18, with 18 pads that are not just shorts vs longs. One of the things that makes this course tough and a challenge is the definitive fairways. The fairways are neat and tidy, but be wary of the rough, which is definitely rough. Red Oak swallows more circular objects than a cop at dunkin' donuts.

The course is constantly maintained and under improvements, which cannot be said for a lot of courses. Steve (sportshero90) and people on the Burnsville league are out there on many a weekend adding small touches, mowing, or picking up trash. The course makes good use of elevation, and of accurate distance. Placement is needed on quite a few holes to ensure not getting a bogey.

In short, a very fun course.
-Fairway vs Rough very clear
-Obstacles require placement
-Variety of distances
-Variety of angles (from 9 to 18)
-Great use of elevation
-Good signage, including small signs that show "Next tee" if people may be confused.

Cons:

-Dirt tees. Yuck. Red Oak has gained a lot of popularity in the last year, and the tees are showing it. Can be rutted and in the rain you might as well forget any run up on drives.

-Rough. As stated above, it's a disc eater. A thick rough is nice, but sometimes it's just too thick.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely worth a stop at this 9/18 holer.

Fun and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful setting in the woods. The fairways are groomed well and the rough is pretty rough.

Challenging enough for more advanced players, but not overly intimidating. A good drive in the fairway will serve you well here.

Good signage. The tees show the length of the hole and there are signs pointing to the next teebox, where it isn't obvious. Big plus.

Dual teepads. This is great, because you can play a full 18 on the 9 holes. The alternate tees provide a different look at each hole. If you can't have a "true" 18, this is the best alternative. This is great stuff!

Nice and secluded. It's a fun trek through the woods.

Baskets are all good.

Holes are varied. There are short and long, open and technical, but they are all challenging and most importantly fun. The longest hole here is 440' I believe.

Some birdie opportunities. Always important!

Can see the whole course in about 30 minutes. (not including alt. tees)

Cons:

Could be frustrating if you toss a few into the woods and spend some time searching. 2 feet into the woods could mean you have no shot.

Teepads are dirt. These are not terrible, but they can be slippery. I haven't played here after a rain, but I can imagine it might get slick. I've slipped a couple times when they were bone-dry.

With dual tees you sometimes you don't realize there's a group waiting to play the "alternate" hole.

Disc-thieving ninjas* They tried stealing my disc twice from the fairway. This was the most deliberate attempt at disc-thievery that I have ever witnessed.
*Note they were probably 12 yrs old, but still..

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun and challenging course to play. If you like a wooded course that also has plenty of open space to work with, with a variety of long and short holes that reward accurate tee shots, this might be the course for you! I would highly recommend Red Oak if you are in the area.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Each hole is challenging in it's own way. The course is done very well and while it is small, you feel like it is much larger because of the sumac and tree cover. Having 18 tees on 9 pins is nice because you can get familiar with the course a lot faster and each tee box offers a new challenge. Long holes as well as short holes make it easy to throw a good score as well.

Cons:

While it is not a huge issue, the tee boxes are dirt which sometimes makes teeing off a bit challenging. While league nights are fun, there are too many people playing for non-leaguers to be able to play because there are only 9 pins.

Other Thoughts:

Don't be afraid to go into the trees. I have never lost a disc but I found one yesterday! Fun course for beginners and veterans alike!

Huge improvements! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has been redesigned in 2009 and is now VERY playable. In the past this course was mostly overgrown with blind shots to heavily vegitated areas. The fairways are now mowed and holes are very well-marked. 9 pins play with 18 tee boxes for an interesting 18 holes.

Cons:

The course can be VERY challenging on some holes - I have walked off from frustration once or twice. On some holes the tree cover changes down the fairway and makes for difficult-to-read gusts of wind.

Other Thoughts:

League play on Thursday nights at 6pm is a great time! Very well run.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really liked the huge distance that was needed when I played this course. It was nice to be able to throw all out and still have a little ways to go after that. Also, there was a nice variety of shots needed. For the most part, this course has open fairways.

Cons:

The amount of sumac and grasses made this course take way longer than anybody expected it to. Also, not knowing the course made trying to find the white tees tough especially on hole number 6 where you throw over the pond.

Other Thoughts:

From the other peoples comments, I'm not sure how relevant this review is now.

Considerably Improved 2+ years drive by

The recent improvements have DRASTICALLY reduced the time spent looking for discs thrown off-line.
Go ahead and throw your favorite discs!

Cons:

No concrete tee pads and there are only 9 holes. It would be nice to have the holes be a bit longer for those like me that can throw 400+

Red Oak revamp 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The fairways are sharp and well kept, great signage makes it very very easy to get around the course, 2 tees on all holes with very different shots from each, Wood chipped walking paths, newly installed benches, extremely clean.

Cons:

Very badly throw shots could still end up in thick brush or sticky bushes, the power arms might think the course is too short, no rest rooms

Other Thoughts:

The course is stunningly beautiful and clean now. Lost discs are a thing of the past. The Burnsville Disc Golf Club works very very hard to keep the course in tip top shape and holds several events a year here as well as The Burnsville Disc Golf League on Thursday Nights.

Do not throw your favorites 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

There are usually only a couple groups on the course at once. It is very challenging and there is a good variety of distances available; the dual tees actually make a difference here. Every hole is unique and different from the last.
Also multiple basket placements (though over two years I've never seen them moved).
New signage at the beginning of the course (but still very confusing; try to play with someone who knows the course).
Good course for some disc turnaround - we lost 2 today, but found 2 others - so don't throw your favorites.

Cons:

Most fairways are extremely narrow, bordered by thick, tall brush, often 4'+. Tall grass throughout the remaining open areas often hides discs expertly.
Though the small sections chosen to be well-kept always are, much of the course should really be cut back (or clear cut) to keep players sane.

Other Thoughts:

This is a skill-shot course. It is absolutely necessary to walk the hole, if not the whole course, before you throw. Play conservatively and you might not lose a disc.
And leave yourself time to play here - mainly to find your discs.
A great place if you plan on making regular visits, but otherwise it'll be a distressing game.
