Time filler while traveling

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This waterside 9-holer is perfect for a quick round (play two discs for 18 holes…why not?) or a short stop while traveling through the area. While largely flat, there is some slight elevation among the first 3 holes. Mostly open drives, except for no. 9. There is some challenge to staying out of the water at nos. 2 and 5, out of the reeds at nos. 6 and 8. I like that no. 8 ends in the woods and no. 9 is a very tight drive out of the woods. On my second visit to this course (fairly early in the morning), there were a number of birds: geese, ducks, but also a large, beautiful heron! The park is a pleasant place to be and was not crowded the two times I have played here. There's a great view of the Delaware River at the Memorial Bridge to watch ships headed in and out of Philadelphia and Wilmington.

Cons:

The only marked tee is no. 1, and that sign looks temporary. (NB: It is up on a mound and not in the same place as it was in the 2008 photo here on DGCR.) Probably just something to get you started in the right place. I was surprised to see that there were three tees per hole at some point. You are guessing where the intended tee is now, based on the DGCR course map. I think most of the holes will be between 200-300 feet using this map. Basket 4 is still missing. There is some interference with the soccer fields at no. 5. The baskets also are not marked. This is not a problem for most holes, but you could confuse the hole 3 basket for the hole 2 basket. Seems there were yellow-painted blocks for nos. 4, 7, and 9 during my first outing. I don't recall them being present during my second outing; they could have been there, and I just missed them. It can get soggy in the field holding nos. 6 and 7, so you want to be wearing substantial shoes. Open-toe sandals won't do it. On my initial outing, it took more than a minute to find the likely-intended no. 9 tee area (at the edge of the course against the walking trail). When you leave the no. 8 basket, go directly towards that path and then walk forward a little to see the tunnel photographed here.

Other Thoughts:

With some TLC, this little course could shine a whole lot better. At a minimum, the tees need to be marked. Marked baskets would be great too. Maybe the local club needs a GoFundMe to rehab the course. Though not local, I would be willing to contribute. It's a basic, no-magic 9-hole course to play if you need to get off the highways for a little while or if you're in the area and want something to do in addition to Stafford Woods and New Brooklyn Park (or even Vineland). It is not a destination course (not by any means), so do *not* pay the toll (if there is one for you) to get here. If you are living in suburban Philadelphia/Wilmington, you might want to visit this park and do other things in addition to the disc golf. There are tennis and basketball courts and the previously-mentioned soccer fields. I am not sure if the small baseball diamond is still there or not. The paved path around the perimeter of the park goes along the riverfront and has several places to perch and watch the boats. There are picnic tables throughout the park. And (though locked each time I was present) restrooms.

My First Jersey Course Did Not Impress! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm kind of baffled by who the Riverview DGC is designed for? It's way too long to be considered a beginner or family type course but too easy and boring to be considered a solid recreational course? So who was it designed for?

The park is a large sprawling expanse next to the Delaware river with views of the Delaware Memorial Bridge and whatever river traffic is currently sailing or floating by. I found the river traffic more entertaining than the course itself.

The holes were all eerily similar, about 300', open with maybe a hardwood tree or two in the way and a fairway with geese and plenty of their droppings. There was very little in the way of variety. It was drive, a short pitch and an easy putt for par. That also shows what a weiney arm I have!

The tee pads were natural and some were worn enough to find after a time spent looking. I don't think the course gets a lot of use.

There was one interesting tee pad throwing from between two large trees although the hole was basically the same as all the others as the basket was sitting in the middle of the field.

Cons:

For the middle of summer, the lawns were quite saturated with water. I had to detour around standing water in numerous places....floods? sprinklers? run-off from the Delaware River?

Long open 300 foot holes with unprotected baskets.

No tee signs of any type.

Tee pads are difficult to find.

Other Thoughts:

Because of the flat, unimaginative terrain here, I think a short beginner/family course would have been the way to go. I'm talking a course with 125'-200' holes all located in one small section of the park close to the parking lot. Somewhere to take the kiddies to or the girlfriend. I'm not sure what demographic this course reaches.

It's such a pretty park sitting here by the river. Although not great terrain for a course, I'd like to see a course here that get used and appreciated.

AB Negative 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dual tees, the 'B' tees being a bit farther and adding some additional obstacles. Bathroom at park, amenities nearby.

Cons:

Dirt tee locations. Tee markers small yellow ground-level blocks w/o any distance information. Perfectly flat. Lots of dog doo-doo and goose-poop about. #9 leaves you a bit far from the parking lot. Couldn't find #6's B-tee.

Other Thoughts:

Plays in a multi-purpose park near the river, so you have a constant breeze for which to account. Holes are mostly open, with a mid-sized tree or two coming into play, moreso on the latter holes. Most holes played as neutral-turning, long drive followed by short approach/long putt types. Overthrowing #2 or #5 could find water. Online map proved useful in following the course.

Decent enough course to introduce people to the game, and the alternate tees do provide a method to play eighteen. Also a good course for practicing new shots, since the chance to lose a wayward disc is low.

Pennsville Tuesdays 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A nice little course near the Delaware Memorial Bridge and right off the Delaware River, Pennsville Riverview course is 9 shiny baskets of laid-back DG. Flat and open with a decent amount of trees as well as some water in play, the 9 holer is simple, stress free, but by no means boring. A few holes require a accurate drive through trees for the deuce, a couple will send you swimming if over-drive the pin and on hole 7 you have to drive up and around a huge tree for a chance at birdie. After a couple rounds here a bit more variety of drives than I expected. For a bit more challenge there is usually a good breeze coming off the river.
Every hole has 2 tees, changing distance and shot angle. A couple holes have unmarked tees (as of yet) that add some fun distance and challenge. On hole 2 the short tee is behind basket 1, slightly to the right. For a tougher shot go to the left and shoot from the end of the small islands over the water at basket 2. The second. farther out island is not always accessible if there has been heavy rain, but both add challenge and variety to the hole. Like wise for hole 6, instead of heading to the right after finishing 5 head to the left and shoot over the water in a straight line from the basket, splitting the trees. Locals also play a hole 10, heading straight into the field and playing back to basket 4, you can start back as far as the walking trail that goes around the edge of the park. Course plays real fast and you can get in a round of 18 from all the tees in under an hour on your own.
Park is very clean and grass is kept well mowed. Unless you hit water here there is no chance of losing a disc. Park also has bathrooms, playground, tennis and b-ball courts and fishing.

Cons:

Tees are nothing but wore out patches in the grass, some of the alternate tees not even that. Each tee is marked by 2 bricks in the ground (my least favorite to find) with hole number and either A or B. (note on hole 8 B tee is the shorter) Finding them you're first time through can be tough, a bit of wandering looking for the worn patches of dirt. Fortunately, the course isn't very large so there isn't too much looking around and once you locate the tee all baskets are visible. Many water foul here and the holes that play near the water have a moderate amount of goose poo for your discs to find. Sometimes you'll find some other park goers making their way through the fairways, but this isn't always the case. Some golfers will be turned off by the simple layout.

Other Thoughts:

No holes here are going to blow your mind, but its always a good time coming over the bridge to play Riverview, my favorite New Jersey nine. Beginner friendly, but also a great place to work on and practice shots you're not good at, be it FH, BH, rollers, new form, whatever. There's a real laid back weekly pro/am match here on Tuesday were Ams and Newbies can have the opportunity to play along side pros and learn some things, Tuesday nights.
1st tee is right by the parking lot, towards the water, by the disc golf sign. 1st alt tee is to the left right on the edge of the waling path.
