The worst course I have ever played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- It's at Road America, which is cool!

- The baskets are very nice.

- The signage on each hole is spectacular, full color prints with nice information.

Cons:

The course itself is horrible.

- Everything is extremely overgrown. The fairway is roughly 3-4' wide, and if you miss at all you might lose your disc. I spent 20 minutes looking for a disc approximately 2' from the fairway. The vegetation is extremely thick, with a lot of thorns.

- You can't see the baskets from most holes; you're shooting blind. The full color signs tell you where it might be located, but you don't know.

- Layout: Some of the holes are really, really far away from other holes. It's confusing and very spread out.

- Water hazards; there is a giant mud pond on the back 9 that looks like it was some sort of construction site. It's mostly just mud/dirt without any vegetation so your discs will roll right into the mud pit.

Other Thoughts:

This was easily the worst course of disc golf I've ever played in my life. I will never bring discs to Road America again unless I feel like losing them.

Incredibly unique experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 hole course that wraps around and inside the track at RoadAmerica racetrack, in between Plymouth and Elkhart Lake. If you are a race fan and haven't been to RA, you're missing out...one of the best road racing courses in the country.

Concrete tee pads, one per hole. These are not poured concrete; instead they used old racetrack barriers and placed them. A pretty cool idea that adds to the racing vibe of the course. They are plenty long, but a bit narrow....but to be fair, very few of the holes are long enough that you'll need a full runup on your drive.

New Veteran baskets, with multiple pin positions on most holes. Cool racing graphics around the band-o-death, and the white color shows up well (mostly) in the woods. All were mounted well, but maybe a tad tall.

Great full color signage on every hole. Pin positions, distance, hole number, graphic of the hole layouts...solidly done. There are also many "next tee" signs to help with navigation.

Onto the golf. RoadAmerica is blessed with a lot of wooded areas, which seems to be somewhat unique for a racetrack. The course plays up and down some rolling hills (nothing too big, though) and mostly through the wooded areas of the property. There is hardly an open hole to be found here, yet nearly all the lines are fair.

There is not really anything here you'd consider a bomber hole outside of hole 16. Most of the holes are heavily wooded, somewhat tight, and relatively short...with a couple exceptions.

So, there are basically two distinct times you can play this course: Mon/Wed from 6-8 during family recreation time, or during race weekends. If you have the opportunity, PLAY IT DURING A RACE. You lose a couple holes (9/16), but there is nothing quite as cool as having really fast cars zooming by you while throwing. This is definitely not an experience you'll be able to find anywhere else! Several of the holes nearly butt directly up against the track/spectator area/walking paths. It was pretty fun to have race fans gathering to watch us throw!

Cons:

This course is pretty spread out, so you'll definitely want to print out a map before playing. If you're on site, you can pick up a map at the racing pro shop, where they also have discs for sale. Also, I would suggest starting on the back 9, as it makes for a slightly more natural loop. Park by the Sargento bridge (between turns 3/4) and start on hole 10. The trickiest spots are the transitions from 11 to 12 (walk up the road, tee on right side), 16 to 17 (go up the hill, cross the big bridge, tee on left side), 18 to 1 (down the hill, past the grandstands, turn right up the hill, directly across from the Gear Box vending area).

There are a couple holes that leave you scratching your head as to how to throw them. Not a huge ratings ding, but worth mentioning.

The course is still a bit rough in areas, as it is pretty new. Nothing too crazy, but pulling a cart through several of the holes can be somewhat cumbersome. With the limited availability that results in somewhat low traffic, this course may take a while to get rid of that "new course smell". This isn't a huge issue, but something to be aware of.

A few of the tee pads could stand to be set more on a level grade. There are definitely a few holes with tricky footing on the drive.

If you're playing during race days, BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. There are some walking paths that butt up against the course. People are generally easy to see here, but please be aware! Severely wayward shots could possibly end up in campsites...but it would have to be pretty severe. This is, after all, a racetrack first and everything else is secondary.

Availability is limited here for the average disc golfer. As state above, there are two 2-hour windows during the week, and race days, if you have a ticket for the race. Don't ever expect to show up on a weekend and be able to play without a ticket for the race. Hopefully more times (especially during the winter) open up in the future.

Other Thoughts:

If you get the opportunity, go play here during race day. It's an experience that's hard to describe. Big crowds at the racetrack, sun shining, super fast cars flying by you...just kind of amazing.

Not the easiest place to get into, but definitely worth a spin if in the area!

So much potential... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let me start off by saying, I hate that I had to give this course a 2.0 rating. Unfortunately it's just that. This course has so much potential for being awesome, and a HUGE ambassador to our disc golf sport, reaching an entirely new audience. Road America gets packed on race weekends, and hole #1 and #9 are hard to miss if you're walking around the track.

The pro's are as follows:

The course is AT ROAD AMERICA. One of the greatest road courses in this country, if not North America/this continent. I love love love Road America every time I get the chance to go. (I work in motorsports so i'm here one to two times a year for racing) When I heard they had installed a course I was beyond excited to see it and play it.

The baskets and tee signs are new and beautiful. The baskets are vinyl wrapped in a cool checkered flag racing theme with corresponding hole numbers, and the tee signs are new and colorful, showing the proposed route to the hole, giving the distances to the multiple pin placements.

You're playing around and inside ROAD AMERICA!!! Such a cool idea to me being a racing nut. The chance to get to play my favorite sport while being surrounded by my other favorite sport is just cool...

The course does make good use of the rolling terrain of Elkhart lake, although nothing extreme in elevation change, there is a nice mix of gentle rolling hills.

This course has the potential to be such a huge ambassador for disc golf. Road America sees huge crowds, and having a course in such a visible area could be great for the sport!

Cons:

I hate to do it, but here they are:

The course was pretty well overgrown when I played it the week leading up to the IndyCar race the weekend of 6/25. I was quite surprised at the undergrowth and lack of defined fairways as I thought it was a brand new course. I was expecting it to be a little more trimmed and manicured, especially leading up to arguably one of RA's biggest weekends crowd wise...not the case. I was in a world of hurt wearing shorts as i stumbled through the stumps, briars and tall weeds.

The tee pads, although new and smooth and long enough were too narrow. I had to make a conscious effort to not step off the side of the pad while making my run up. It was a mind game each drive...
On top of being too narrow, there were several holes where the pad pointed several degrees off from the basket. Although there was not clear cut fairway, maybe it was intended to force some sort of line that wasn't apparent? Confusing...

Navigation is tricky. I had to rely heavily upon the DGCR app to keep pulling up the digital map to find may way arround. The front 9 is mostly intuitive, but the back 9 gets a bit tricky as the next tee is not often visible or near the previous basket. A lack of signage also adds to the general confusion.

Hole #1 starts right near the main road of the track. Easy to find, and close to parking. However, hole #18 leaves you a considerable walk away from where you began. Bring water, as the course in general is very stretched out and a long walk.

Other Thoughts:

I really, really wish I could rate this course higher. And hopefully in the future some improvements will be made. I had a hard time enjoying my round of golf here due to the overgrowth, confusing holes with no clear fairway, narrow tee pads and lack direction to the next hole.

If you're at the track, or live nearby I'd say go ahead an throw a round here just to say you did. But otherwise, I unfortunately have to say, I wouldn't go out of my way to play here.
