So much potential... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let me start off by saying, I hate that I had to give this course a 2.0 rating. Unfortunately it's just that. This course has so much potential for being awesome, and a HUGE ambassador to our disc golf sport, reaching an entirely new audience. Road America gets packed on race weekends, and hole #1 and #9 are hard to miss if you're walking around the track.

The pro's are as follows:

The course is AT ROAD AMERICA. One of the greatest road courses in this country, if not North America/this continent. I love love love Road America every time I get the chance to go. (I work in motorsports so i'm here one to two times a year for racing) When I heard they had installed a course I was beyond excited to see it and play it.

The baskets and tee signs are new and beautiful. The baskets are vinyl wrapped in a cool checkered flag racing theme with corresponding hole numbers, and the tee signs are new and colorful, showing the proposed route to the hole, giving the distances to the multiple pin placements.

You're playing around and inside ROAD AMERICA!!! Such a cool idea to me being a racing nut. The chance to get to play my favorite sport while being surrounded by my other favorite sport is just cool...

The course does make good use of the rolling terrain of Elkhart lake, although nothing extreme in elevation change, there is a nice mix of gentle rolling hills.

This course has the potential to be such a huge ambassador for disc golf. Road America sees huge crowds, and having a course in such a visible area could be great for the sport!

Cons:

I hate to do it, but here they are:

The course was pretty well overgrown when I played it the week leading up to the IndyCar race the weekend of 6/25. I was quite surprised at the undergrowth and lack of defined fairways as I thought it was a brand new course. I was expecting it to be a little more trimmed and manicured, especially leading up to arguably one of RA's biggest weekends crowd wise...not the case. I was in a world of hurt wearing shorts as i stumbled through the stumps, briars and tall weeds.

The tee pads, although new and smooth and long enough were too narrow. I had to make a conscious effort to not step off the side of the pad while making my run up. It was a mind game each drive...
On top of being too narrow, there were several holes where the pad pointed several degrees off from the basket. Although there was not clear cut fairway, maybe it was intended to force some sort of line that wasn't apparent? Confusing...

Navigation is tricky. I had to rely heavily upon the DGCR app to keep pulling up the digital map to find may way arround. The front 9 is mostly intuitive, but the back 9 gets a bit tricky as the next tee is not often visible or near the previous basket. A lack of signage also adds to the general confusion.

Hole #1 starts right near the main road of the track. Easy to find, and close to parking. However, hole #18 leaves you a considerable walk away from where you began. Bring water, as the course in general is very stretched out and a long walk.

Other Thoughts:

I really, really wish I could rate this course higher. And hopefully in the future some improvements will be made. I had a hard time enjoying my round of golf here due to the overgrowth, confusing holes with no clear fairway, narrow tee pads and lack direction to the next hole.

If you're at the track, or live nearby I'd say go ahead an throw a round here just to say you did. But otherwise, I unfortunately have to say, I wouldn't go out of my way to play here.
