Meh 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a large park with great mature oak trees. Most of the holes play through these oaks, offering a moderate height canopy and enough obstacles that you'll have to shape some different lines. There is nice variety in hole length, with some ace runs and some holes that let you pull out a driver.

The area seems mostly disc golf exclusive, there's a walking path on a couple holes but it seems lightly used and the visibility is good. A few holes have some tricky water OB near the green, adding some risk to going for the birdie off the tee.

Cons:

This course feels very repetitive after a while. The distances are different, but every shot is fairly similar with a tee shot between the large oaks and no punishment for a bad drive. There's almost no rough here, so it's easy to recover for 3 even on a horrible shot. A few of the holes offer interesting lines, but it's straight shots for most of the rest.

A couple holes have long prairie grass in play, I find that kind of rough frustrating since it doesn't affect your next shot it just wastes time and fills your socks and shoes with foxtails. The signage is awful, it has no real information about the hole. Without distance or hole layout, it's often difficult to figure out which of several baskets to shoot to. There are some odd transitions, it's easy to skip holes in a few places if you're not using a map.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course very approachable. The distances are long in some spots, but with little punishment and generous lines to hit it won't be too frustrating. More experienced players won't find a ton of challenge here. It's not a bad place to get some driving practice in, but your technical game won't get much of a workout.

A decent afternoon jaunt 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plays through a grove of mature oak trees and around a winding creek. Since the fairways are wide and mostly flat, it is perfect for beginners and intermediates, but would still be fun for any level of player. The holes that place the pins near the creek add some great challenges on many drives and putts. There are multiple rotating pin positions per hole, which keeps things fresh.

The pro shop is nice, with a friendly staff and a decent variety of discs and drinks for sale.

Cons:

Though I enjoyed playing here, I didn't find the layout particularly challenging. The trees were spaced out enough to allow a reasonable upshot if your drive went astray- on a majority of holes, not enough penalties for poor drives. The holes seemed to blend together after awhile - even though there was a mix of left, right, straight.

Signage did not display enough info - footage and hole layout non-existent. Next hole signs would have been helpful in places. I recommend printing a map (I had a friendly local as a guide, but it was not evident to me where to go next in some cases).

A bit crowded at 1:30 on a summer Thursday. This did not delay our play too much, but those who want to get away from it all may have to choose times wisely.

Other Thoughts:

They are in the process of adding 9 holes to the course, which will affect some of the existing holes to a degree. They are trying to finish this by next month.

Orangevale's Little Bro 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- cement tees, in good shape
- dual pins, changed fairly often
- good use of elevation keeps the repetitive holes a little more interesting than they would be
- low canopies on some holes will teach you to throw low and straight
- pin placements around the creeks are creative and fun. Many good risk/reward pins
- well defined and well kept fairways
- some cool barriers built with logs
- lots of trash cans, usually one every few holes

Cons:

- poor tee signs. they're in good shape, but they only tell you the hole number and what the par is (always 3). No maps or distances. This can make finding the correct basket tough for newcomers.
- mostly open, not much technical challenge
- very dry and dusty, no water on the course
- can be crowded on weekends
- many of the holes get repetitive, either slightly doglegged left/right

Other Thoughts:

Tee 1 is about 100 yards away from the parking area, across the large open field between the tennis courts and the bathroom building.

I found navigation on this course to be difficult the first time I was out here because of the poor signage and being able to see multiple baskets from the tee (after you get to the mid-6), but before you tee off check the back of the tee signs because someone has put some very basic maps with clear laminate on the back of the signs. Not all of them are there (actually only about half), but if you're new to the course they will help you out a lot.

The other players here are all pretty nice, and understand the concept of letting a smaller group play through, which was a nice change from many of the other California courses I've played.

All in all this course is fun, but only for a round or two, or if you feel like playing a longer game of Ript! with your friends. Everyone that has said that Orangevale (Shady Oaks) is better and more of a challenge is right, you're time will be better spent there, and you'll be a better player because of it. Rocklin is worth a stop by if you've never played it before, but if you have to make a choice, go to Orangevale.

major overhaul 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course would be good for beginners to intermediate players. It is very wide open, especially with all of the work that was done to the course this last week. It is very clean with bathrooms before you start. There is no interference from park goers. There is a nice mixture of short and long holes and the holes are moved once every couple-few weeks it seems.

Cons:

Better players may find this course to be boring, especially with Shady Oaks right down the street. They cleared TONS of growth making this wide open course incredibly wide open which is disappointing for me.

Other Thoughts:

Signs don't tell you where the pins are, only that they are par 3s, but now that it has been cleared I think you can see EVERY pin from the box.

Not impressed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Parking lot is about 400 feet from the first tee with a grassy area in between. Nice area to warm up in as you are walking toward the course.

Locales were friendly and assisted in finding tee pads and several groups allowed me to play through.

Restrooms are available and looked to be new. Don't know if drinking water was around.

Concrete tee pads. Open course lightly wooded with minor elevation changes. Was easy to spot the basket before throwing.

Course stands alone so no interference from other park users.

There are other areas in the park for the wife and kids to have fun in while you get your round in.

Cons:

Dirt dirt dirt. No grass on these fairways. Signage doesn't tell you anything except the hole number and the par. Some of the fairways are very close together.

Other Thoughts:

With Shady Oaks right down the way I don't know why you'd play here.
