Stretching 3 baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

On a small strip of land on the south side of Rumsey Park in beautiful Mogollon Rim country, Arizona, sits 3 lonely new Discatcher baskets. A mailbox stores small course maps to show you how to play 18 holes using only 3 baskets. I have to say I'm impressed with the ability to put together 18 holes with only 3 baskets. The 3 basket limitation is one thing, but the small strip of land they occupy is another, where they've managed to find all kinds of looks at the baskets when there are really very few interesting places to throw.

The park is nice, and has amenities like bathrooms and potable water. There is a nice soccer/rugby field next to the course where one might enjoy practicing longer throws.

Cons:

Well, there are 3 baskets. The course is very small in terms of land space also, so there isn't a great deal of room to throw bombs. If anyone else were playing the course at the same time, it might be very difficult to find a good flow, and perhaps slightly dangerous.

Other Thoughts:

I give the course a "reasonable" rating since it is indeed a nice thing that they've been able to establish at least the barest semblance of a course given the paucity of land and baskets.

While I wouldn't recommend that people make a long trip to play this course, if you do happen to be in the Payson area, and jones-ing for some disc golf, at least there are some chains you can go and throw at.

But more seriously, this region has some of the most amazing landscape and treescape for disc golf, and it is unfortunate that plans for a course that would attract visitors has not come to fruition. Note that disc golf courses are now popping up everywhere in National Forest land in the Sierras of California, and something like this might be the most promising route to get an epic 18 installed (same agency, and there is a precedent that can be cited/invoked).
