Samui Disc Golf - Maenam, Koh Samui 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Short, technical 9 hole course located in Maenam.

Very well manicured and clean.

Nice DISCatcher-style baskets.

Several mandos including a triple mando on hole 1, and several OB areas including a road-and-beyond on the right side of hole 3's fairway that adds many strokes to scorecards.

Multiple pin positions on every hole.

Alternate tournament layout that adds longer holes and has some holes in a more open area.

Raised brick tees with very large tee signs.

Clubhouse on site with food, beverages, and discs and merchandise for sale, including many discs with custom local stamps.

Weekly doubles on Mondays and singles on Wednesday, and the singles league runs several PDGA sessions throughout the year.

Great group of regular players.

Several tournaments per year, including the signature Samui Swine Classic.

Nigel and Som are amazing hosts.

Cons:

Short holes, and most are very flat.

Small tees and not the greatest grip.

Tee signs only have the hole number; no map of the hole or distances / pars.

Criss-crossing fairways and tees close to baskets. This isn't an issue most of the year when there aren't a lot of players on the course, but when busy it can become a safety issue and waits are common.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to practice hitting tight lines and shot shaping with slower discs, and for beginners and families with children. Besides a few of the tournament layout holes (which aren't used very often), all of the holes are pretty short so you will need to go to one of the other courses in Samui to practice your long game. The weekly rounds are always a great time with amazing people. The food is fabulous, and drinks are cold and cheap. The service is also on-point, from a western perspective. If you are on the island of Koh Samui, definitely stop by and play this course. Random dubs on Mondays and singles on Wednesday. Both weeklies currently start at 4:00 PM but during the shorter winter days they start at 3:00 PM.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to find, friendly people, well kept. Short but technical course and though you can't air it out too much with a driver there are some nice putter and mid range drives through lots of trees that can be worked on. Great for honing the finess side of the game.

Cons:

Short, only 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

League on Wednesday is fun and Nigel, the guy who runs it, puts on food for those that want it after the game. Cold drinks and beers are available on site and during league play you have access to the ace kitty.

Get your DG fix while on holiday. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wonderful setting. Samui is a great place to visit.

Well taken care of course, which takes a lot of effort in the tropics. The jungle grows fast.

Easy to get to. Not far off the main road.

A very casual and fun setting. This is not the place to get wrapped up in your game or stress when you throw a bad shot. (Though why do that anywhere?)

Multiple tee positions for new golfers. This is a place where you really can play with a mixed group. Newbs and regular golfers.

Nigel and his family are warm and friendly. It's a nice place to relax between rounds and chat over a beer.

If you come for the weekly Nigel then expect to stay for dinner. Nigel cooks up a feast for the golfers. It was one of the better meals I've had on Samui.

You can drink on the course. Of course you can, it's Thailand!

Cons:

Shorter than a course back home but that's not to say that it's easy either. You have to hit very tight windows on some holes if you want a birdie. There are some bogies lurking out there too.

A lot of holes cross so beware of other groups. It's usually not so crowded as for this to be a big problem.

Like everywhere in Thailand you want to sunscreen up and put on bug spray around dawn and dusk.

Other Thoughts:

The photos show the homemade baskets. I was really pleasantly surprised at how well they caught discs. I had a few putts that I would have expected to bounce off (like they would have on a DisCatcher) that the chains grabbed and held.

So, don't look at the baskets and think that this isn't a real course. It is.

This is definitely a 1-3 disc course. I played it with a stable mid, an understable mid and a putter. I could have played it with any one of those three. After a while I got tired of carrying my bag around and just played with one disc.

This is actually a marginal "PRO" for the course. It's a good change of pace to play with just one disc and to force yourself to do everything that you would normally rely on the discs to do. So, if you're packing light for Thailand just bring your favorite putter or mid and have a ball.

Manicured Jungle 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 2, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is a well manicured jungle/orchard.
Course owner Nigel and his wife spend hours cutting back the constant growth to give us a very nice flat lawn to play on.

Due to the coconut trees and assorted other Thai fruit trees on the property, there is a regular patch of shade to be found somewhere, which is a relief as it's nearly always 30c and sunny here.

Course layout is a good mix of shots. Focus here is certainly on accuracy, as the course is very short by modern pro standards.
Nigel is also a caterer, and runs his business out of his home on the golf course. You can find homemade food like pizzas, meatball subs and bbq, cold water, soda and beers as well.

Property is centrally located. From the only traffic light in Maenam, you are only a 15 min walk or a 1 min bike taxi ride away.

Constant flow of international travelers stop by Nigel's, for his bbq and/or for golf, so there is almost always someone out on the golf course during the islands high seasons.

Cons:

It's a short course. Average distance from the blue tees is only about 200ft over 9 holes.

It's only 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

The only real problem with this golf course is that there currently isn't any wide open space to stretch your arm out a bit.

As it stands, bring out your putters, midrange and perhaps a fairway driver and have fun. You're playing on a small tropical island in Thailand.

There are alternate tee/hole combinations that allow you to play a second round of 9 after playing the designated 9 from the blue tees, adding length and difficulty to each. You must ask Nigel about these because you will be crossing fairways.
