Quick and Easy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Quick and easy course that is great for practicing putts/mid-range shots. It was fun for the beginner and had a few holds that were surprisingly decent (5,6,7,9).

Cons:

Not very inspiring due to location. Tees pads not all marked well but only #6 is hard to find (near the far-fence). Some old pathways intersecting the course can beat-up the discs.

Other Thoughts:

Bring your whole bag when it is not busy and throw multiple shots per hole to make it a great practice spot for accuracy and putting.

Against the grain 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I will be apparently going against the grain, but out of all of the nine hole courses I have played, this is one of the best. The course has a wide variety of lengths, and obstacles. The paths are paved concrete which is nice. The best part of this course is the 100's of spectators. This course is covered with prairie dogs. You get to disc golf and see some entertaining wildlife.

Cons:

The holes are very short, and it is in an odd part of town. Also, hole layout is a bit confusing.

Other Thoughts:

I had a blast on this course, and will likely return.

Interesting Dead Log Arrangment you Have 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Schaefer DGC is a surprisingly fun short nine hole course that is perfect for novice players. At just over 2100' holes average around 250' on open and easy to navigate terrain. The course runs in a circle design starting and ending near the parking lot area. Baskets are in average shape and the concrete tees are ample and nice to shoot from.

I love when people go the extra mile on a course that is relatively plain and boring. Note the amount of dead tree trunks surrounding many of the pins, and you know that someone cares for this place. Some might think this is silly or unnecessary, but I thought they were a cool touch. This is a great course to learn, practice, and improve your short game. Plus a round only takes 30 minutes max, so you can play a few rounds in a short amount of time.

BEST HOLE/S: #7; #9

Cons:

Intermediate players and above might find this place a bit boring because of the lack of challenge in length, pin placement, and foliage density. All of the holes are straight shots and never force you to use more than two or three discs in a round. If you're experienced and looking to improve your game, head into the mountains because this is not the course that raises the bar.

Print the map, because navigation can be difficult for first timers. The tee boxes and pins are easy to spot, but it's hard to know if you're shooting in the correct location some of the time. Note taking a left after pin #8, because you naturally want to move back over to #5. Finally, the course is pretty pitted since you're playing in a prairie dog town that is very reminiscent of Westminster DGC up in northwest Denver.

WORST HOLE/S: #4

Other Thoughts:

This is one of those courses people tend to love or hate since it's fairly straight forward with not much to challenge you. The concrete tees and dead logs are nice addition, but even then it'll never be a destination location. I enjoyed my experience here and it helped me work out some kinks in my game before I hit the more challenging courses.

If you're new to the sport, need a quick fix, or like me - annoyed with your round at Arapahoe Community College a few miles away, Schaefer DGC is a welcome relief. However, since you're already in south Denver and have time, just make the pilgrimage up to Beaver Ranch/Conifer Park - one of the top courses in the United States, but if time or distance is a concern this place certainly fits the bill.

Very Fun, Very Very Short 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is an awesome course for beginners and people who just want to play a quick round or two. Tees and baskets for the most part are easy to find, and for how short it is, there is still a variety of shots with bends left, right, around trees, even man placed obstacles.

Cons:

Course is way too short for serious play. On occasion the course can become crowded quickly, but usually moves fairly quick.

Other Thoughts:

Great course to hit on the way back to town after Conifer or Phantom Falls. Easy for kids and strollers to navigate, with porta-potties in the parking lot. Course is short enough you can play two or three rounds before you know it.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

nice baskets, nice big cement tee pads, porta potties adjacent to the course, easy to get to from the highway, easy to play a quick round.

Cons:

they had old dead trees sticking out of praire dog holes as the obstacles other than the fear of a rabid praire dog (i'm sure they're all friendly little praire dogs that just love to be petted) attacking you if one of your shots came to close for comfort as their dens are scattered all over the property. a few trees scattered about on the property.

no navigational design on tee sign to give the first time player at this course a clue of knowing if they're playing the correct hole.

Other Thoughts:

It was another DGC that needs some serious attention to be considered a course to play all the time. i'd skip it and go to Conifer.

Maps available at park office which is at the other end of the baseball fields and park.

Prairie Dog Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 19, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good course for beginners. Good for mid and putt practice if you're more seasoned. You can play 2 games in a row fairly quickly to get in 18. The only place you might lose a disc for a little while is to the left of #9 when the grass is tall.

Cons:

Trash on the ground most of the time, graffiti on hole markers, and lots of broken glass.

Other Thoughts:

The city needs to bolt the log obstacles together on #7 to keep the nieghborhoodlums from knocking them down all the time.

Park close to the tee pad for #1 or risk errant discs hitting your vehicle.

This DGC needs some love...

use your imagination for great practice round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great place to introduce others to the great sport of disc golf. It is a drive and put for us short throwers, but I have been able to carefully gage how much my drives are improving. 1, 5, and 8 can be a beginners first birdie holes. It is embarrasing when the Prarie dogs laugh and chuckle at your drive. Also, head here when the Denver skys turn dark. Just before the rain comes down the wind here gets trickey. If you show up alone, there is always someone to play with. Lots of interesting stories, always somebody to critique your shots.

Cons:

A large group of young people can gather and play 8 to a hole, and they can manage to loose a disc in the Long grass around 9. Their biggest bragging thing was how many beers they could carry in their bag. There was a hornet's nest at the 8th tee, but, I called the Foothills park people and it was wiped out the following day! Since this is mainly a dirt course, if you play it a lot, you can get used to sliding an Aero up to the basket. This won't help at other courses, and can be a bad habbit.

Other Thoughts:

Play this course with imagination. Make the tree on 8 a Mando opposite the natural fade of your disc. Instead of throwing your Roc at 1, see if you can get your longest driver from going past the hole. Use the old Teepad for 3 adds another 100 feet. You want to park as close as possible to the first teepad, because the farther down you are the more likely your car is to be hit by errant throws. I do love playing this course.

Practice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is good for ace runs, beginners and practicing your putting & approach shots. The man made obstacles made getting to a few holes a bit more challenging. Getting from each basket to the next tee pad was fairly easy to do with out a map with the exception of basket 5 to pad 6. Like most other people said there is no chance to loose a disc here. Looks like some crazy prairie dogs there because some of the asphalt paved paths had been burrowed through by them... The baskets are nice and new and seem to be in good condition. Concrete tee pads improve this course to be something worth playing if you are in the area.

Cons:

There is a lot of graffiti on this course. The hole markers seem to be the bragging spot for all the course aces. This even carried over to one tee pad. It seems like this course was an afterthough for the space it is in. This course is not on the list of courses to hit in Denver. I think most people that play it and maintain it know this fact, but not every course is champsionship.

Other Thoughts:

This course can be a good warm up if you are coming from the west side of Denver headed down C-470 to Lighthouse.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy course to play with no way of losing a disc. The baskets and tee pads are in good condition. There are some man-made obstacles around some of the baskets to add a little extra challenge. (see photos) I had a map with me so it was very easy to see which way I needed to be throwing. The course starts and end by the parking lot and minimal walking between holes.

Cons:

The tee sighs consists of an six foot tall wood 4x4 with a number on it. Nothing too challenging and not too eye catching. All dirt all year long and watch out for those prairie dog holes.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I do feel that this is a decent course to stop by and play a round at. I played it twice for 18 holes and it took no time at all.

Other Thoughts:

Nice view. Easy to get to. Not much traffic on the course. Good for beginners.

Prairie Dogs! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a nice open feel and very little elevation, so it's easy on the legs. You can drive every basket here, if your aim is on, you'll birdie every hole. There are prairie dogs everywhere, which makes for an amusing round.

Cons:

There are prairie dogs everywhere! Yeah well they're funny but they smell bad! And if you're a serious player you won't like their heckling.

Other Thoughts:

Great Beginner Course, no chance of loosing a disc here, maybe down a dog hole, so watch your ankles!! Easy to find, but I bet it's windy there most days, pretty wide open.

Quick and Easy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

All holes easily reachable, good for beginners, good course to practice new shots/discs on, pretty straightforward layout for the most part, no water hazards or risk of losing discs, on site bathroom and close parking (right on hole 1)

Cons:

Very easy, can be very, very crouded with large groups during peak hours, not very much variety, lots of ground hog holes.

Other Thoughts:

I go to this course to practice putting and a variety of shots. There are so many more challenging, fun courses in the area this course is very easy to ignore (Any disc golf course is worth playing in my opinion though)

Better options in the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plays fast with little to no chance of losing a disc. Nice concrete tee boxes and baskets in good condition. Onsite porta-potties are present. Seems like minimal chance of pedestrian interference. A couple efforts have been made to add man-made obstacles to increase the difficulty of the course.

Cons:

Poor signage, most holes have just a simple wooden post that may or may not have the hole number on it, and no distances. Not very interesting visually or from a playability perspective either. Many prairie dog holes, so watch where your step.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very easy course to play and provides little challenge for a player with any experience. There isn't a hole on which a semi-seasoned player should ever take more than a '3'.

My first time through (without a map) I played to basket #6 from tee #8 as that seemed to be the logical flow of the course. You're supposed to follow the walking path from basket #5 to tee #6.

If you want to get a fast round played then Schaefer will suffice, but there are much better courses in the area.

Great beginner course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Easy to find tees. Great course for your dog. Pretty view of the mountains to your west. Easy to find the first tee (right next to the parking lot).

Cons:

Short distances to the baskets. Most of the drives are pretty straight with little or no obstructions. Not much elevation changes. It only has 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Would be nice to have some signs with marked distances. Overall an ok course.

Great short course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Quick, short course. Excellent place to practice mid-range and putting shots. Easy to birdie many of the holes.

Cons:

Inhabited by a few prairie dog towns, in a wind-prone location.

Other Thoughts:

Great for a quick 9 - a pair can run the course in less than 30 min. What the course lacks in distance, it more than makes up for in a variety of obstacle placements and soon to be interesting holes.
