Sertoma / Chainsaw Classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice mix of short to medium distance shots.
Up and down hill, left right turns, tight to open fairways and risk and reward. Couple of nice mowed fairways a la Winthrop. Need to play smart on all but a few open holes with distance and shot lines - creek in play. Great fun for players at any level.
Previous reviews very accurate.

Cons:

Work in progress with several concrete pads. Balance are sand mix. A rake would be nice to smooth out previous players ruts till complete.

Other Thoughts:

Played in Chainsaw Classic (2) rounds.
Job well done by Adam Wright and all who contributed to the effort. Nice to see opportunities for novices and juniors to compete.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is designed for the beginner, it's not very long(only one hole over 400') and is not too technical. There is a great place for courses like this. A big plus for this being a beginner course is that it doesn't interfere with the rest of the park -- no bike trails, playgrounds, or baseball fields to try to throw around ,which I view as a big plus.
Very well laid out course, great use of the land. The creek comes into play on a couple holes, but only very errant shots will end up in the drink -- holes 5 and 18 are the only holes where the water to the left can hold a disc, and only 5 will the disc possibly be too deep to retrieve.
Great variety -- I'm a lefty backhand thrower, and I had to throw hyzers, straight tunnels, big anhyzers, and shape shots. The elevation comes into play as well -- some ace runs are made more challenging by the need to control your disc going up or downhill.
The course starts off with an ace run, then a woods shot, then into the open field, then back into the woods, then the field again, and finishes in the woods. An excellent pace so the holes don't get repetitive back-to-back.
The lines you need to take are fair, not one hole is there a tee shot where you think "this is just a luck shot gap."
Navigation is excellent -- very easy to see where you're going to shoot, and wooden arrows direct you to the next tee, and it's easy to follow even without them.
The few benches that were there are short but very nice.
Practice basket with LOTS of room just in front of the parking lot.

Cons:

Not much here for a seasoned player to be challenged by. Those with experience will be looking at a lot of dueces, and cursing the ones they don't get.
Tee signs -- there are posts with wooden pictures of the holes, but some are really beaten by the weather and are unreadable. Not too much of a problem as the navigation and layout makes it clear where you're going. Replacing these would be a bonus.
I never have a problem carrying my trash in my bag until I'm leaving, but some may want more trash cans.
Tee pads -- some are newly poured concrete, but most are dusty rockish areas. Careful footing is required for run-ups, but only a few holes really warrant a run-up anyway.

Other Thoughts:

We met Dennis(course design/maintenance) and he asked us what we would change as he played with us on our second round. A couple holes are maybe too short(especially 1), but again, this is a beginner-friendly course, so that's not a mark against it.
Looking forward to playing the Chainsaw Classic this weekend!

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very fun course. Nice scenery. Short and technical course except for a few holes. Nice elevation changes. Benches every few holes were nice. Several holes where you will hunt for the ace. New cement tee pads on several holes. You will need all shape shots espeically with your mid-ranges.

Cons:

Some of the tee pads had large ruts but a large run up was not needed on most holes. Needs a couple trash cans especially one in parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

When playing for the first time, walk to the basket to view possible trouble before you throw. Some baskets come close to the creek and it is needed information before you throw. Very efficient use of land. All in all very fun course!

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 12, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Sertoma Field's DG course is one of the finest courses in the upstate of South Carolina. The rec department is continuously making improvements to the course. Last time I went there were new trash cans and benches. The designer used the land to create a variety of holes; suitable for beginners to advanced players.

Cons:

The teepads are still a little rough. However, it wouldn't surprise me if concrete teepads are the next addition to the course.

Sertoma Field 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

There is a complete variety of holes on this course: open holes, wooded holes, lefties, righties, shorter holes and longer holes. There is lots of elevation change throughout and the deep/wide creek keeps you honest on several holes. This is one of the better course layouts I have played; the way the designers used the available land results in a very enjoyable course. I especially like the way the course alternates between the big open field and the wooded areas. This results in several holes that start in the open and end in the woods and vice versa. I also like the way that every hole has some sort of challenge, be it an extreme elevation change, a dogleg in the fairway or a carefully placed obstacle.

Cons:

Hard to find any real cons to this course, although it can be noted that many of the gravel tee pads are somewhat rutted from being used over time. That said, I can't remember having any problems with the tee pads without using a little extra care. If your disc goes into the creek, it is probably a goner since the size of the creek and steepness of the banks makes disc retrieval not worthwhile.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a blast to play. Sertoma Field is a very nice city park in a rural town in the South Carolina foothills. There are plenty of other park activities going on, but the disc golf course is in a dedicated area of the park so there is no concern about conflict with other park activities. There are plenty of gems in this part of the state and Sertoma Field is one of the best. This course is at the top of my list to play again on future outings to the Palmetto State.

Pros:

Very fun duce-able course. I have played it several time and have always enjoyed it. City of Walhalla has done a great job w/ benches, paths, and mowing. Couple long holes. River hazards on 3 or so holes. Nice wooded course w/ bonus open holes.

Cons:

Tee pads. They are crushed gravel. The idea was it would harden and b/c like concrete. Unfortunately this has not yet occurred. Divots for in the tee pad where people plant their foot and pivot on their drives. These divots can be distracting at their best and dangerous at their worst.

Short but nice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my home course...meaning its closer than any other...my kids and I play here almost weekly.

The course is separated from other park activities. So there is no worry about walkers, hikers, bike riders or others getting in the way.

Course is very short so its a great place for my younger kids to play and not get tired.

Course offers several ace run holes...I've aced two of the holes (1 & 15) and hit metal on many others (4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 14) so buddies abound...if you keep the shots online.

The course also offers several benches, trash cans and the creek has several small waterfalls that add to the feel of the course.

The park and rec guys keep the course in great shape...cleaning up down trees and limbs immediately and keeping the grassy fairways mowed.

Cons:

The course has crushed rock tees on most holes and that makes for some uneven footing. The tee signs are showing age and are hard to read on some holes.

The banks to the creek are steep in some areas and that makes retrieving an errant shot difficult on some holes.

They allow parents and patrons of other sports to park along holes 1, 2 and 3 during the spring and early summer on week nights and Saturdays. Would be frustrating if you're not from the area and came to play a course and found cars parked 'in play'. I think it shows a lack of respect for the game.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoy playing the course and it has become my favorite course in Oconee County, SC and one of my top 5 to play. It's short enough where I can bring my three boys and they can play the full 18 without getting winded or discouraged.

Pros:

This is one of the better courses I have played. It has everything I need to feed the addiction. You have up hill down hill shots to the left and some to the right. Then there are short holes and long holes. The first hole is really short but don't let it sway you from finishing the course.

Cons:

The worst thing I can say is there were not more holes to enjoy. With that said there could be some tee pads and maybe some more trash cans.

Other Thoughts:

This has to be one of my favorite places. Too bad I am 10 hours away. My bro lives in the area so he will be there often to let me know how it is going.

Fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was the first time I have ever been here and I must say it was a very fun course.A good challenge for those who are still in the beginner phase and those who are better and as has been mentioned a great place to introduce someone to the world of disc golf. A couple of holes scream for an ace to be made and at the same time there are a few you can practice "ripping" your favorite disc.Challenging hills to throw up to the basket as well as some to throw down.Lots of fun to play and if I lived closer I would play fairly often.

Cons:

If I were really picky I would say that a few of the holes are pretty close to a large creek, which by the way has a nice shade of rust orange to it (yecch)
Really needs more garbage cans around.

Other Thoughts:

All in all a very well kept course. Fairways were mowed nice and wide and even the fairways in the woods were kept up.
nice comfortable wooden benches by a few of the holes.
Seemed to be in a nice area of town. Highly recommended.

Edited review after obtaining more experience at the game. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course for beginners. I introduced some friends to disc golf and this is the perfect course to start off playing on. Next-tee signs are all over the place.

Cons:

Cement tee off pads would be preferred. The course could use a couple longer holes.

Other Thoughts:

Edit 11/22/2015:

After gaining more experience and playing much better courses, I have dropped my rating to a 3 and have some more thoughts on the course.

This is still a great par 3 course. There are some holes that I think aren't designed very well or could be lengthened and changed to a par 4.

Hole 4 should be longer, there is plenty of room to do so. It's too one dimensional and boring.
Hole 7 is not just a right dog leg, its fairway goes out a hundred feet and does a complete 90 degree angle . No disc flies like that, and laying up on a par 3 is dumb. So you're left with cutting the corner through trees and tiny branches/leaves. There is no flight path to shoot for. Sometimes you get lucky and make it, sometimes you don't. It's just a poor design.
Hole 12 should be longer and a par 4.
Hole 17 Is poorly shaped. It's easy to hit the gap and get your disc down the fairway to the left, but the disc catcher is on the right.... There's no reliable way to get your disc near the catcher for a bird, or an ace for that matter. I've gotten birdies before, but they were all luck. Your drive will hit the fairway and skip left into the woods. Sometimes you'll get lucky with small skip or a skip into a tree. Par 3's should always be aceable. And there should always be a way to get your disc to navigate the fairway to the basket. The catcher could be moved down the hill farther and to the left. Or lengthen the hole by moving the tee pad farther back, which will make hitting the gap harder and make the hole a par 4.

Pros:

This is a very fun course to play. Some great opportunities to get a hole in one. Grab your long distance drivers and let them fly. There are so great open holes to let them rip. Very Fun!

Cons:

Be careful on 5, 6, and 7. If you go left at all your disc is in the very large creek. The creek bank is very high and the creek is deep and swift. Many discs will be lost.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good, fun course. Some holes could be longer, but all and all worth the drive to play.

Fun little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

A great beginner friendly course in that most of the holes are shorter. Winds along a creek on many holes. Fairways are tight but fair. Good mix of elevation changes. Next tee marked very well, easy to navigate.

Cons:

Although it looks great, the creek being so close to many holes could be difficult for many beginners.Pros may find it "too short", although this is a great course to improve your short game.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to play if you want to work on your accuracy, there are a few "grip it" holes so that you can work on "drives", but the majority is technical "touch shot" holes. I took my 5 year old son, and he enjoyed it due to the fact that many holes you could see the basket from the teepad.

Pros:

OK. A very short course, yet still hard and very fun!. Pros plan to throw your putter alot, but still have to throw it good. Lots of very tight fairways, but also some wide open windy, hilly, and semi-long holes. It's a very pretty course, with nice pretty hilly holes as well as holes that scim the side of a very deep creek. Overall a very good course. The Wahalla Rec. people did a very good job.

Cons:

Very short. But they have the room to lengthen a few of the holes, so maybe in time they will lenghten it.
