Pros:
Once we realized this course was at the top of the gondola, it wasn't too tough to find. The day prior, we spent hours trying to locate the yellow course from the base area. Be prepared for a hike if you're trying to play that one.
A zoomed in summer map at the top of the gondola indicates where the first tee is located, just past the covered magic carpet. From there, navigation is rather easy. There are small flags on trees and somewhat beaten in pathways from baskets to the next tee. Tees are marked by posts with numbers.
Baskets are visible from nearly every tee and the red stands out well against the green of the pines. Some cool shots into wooded coves, especially on the backside of the course.
This course was not super challenging and despite the high altitude, doesn't have a ton of steep uphill/downhill shots/climbs. My wife enjoyed it and you could easily bring someone newer to the sport here.
We were pleased with the grass being cut somewhat recently considering the long grass we encountered the day before on the yellow course. The course is well trafficked enough that pathways exist in common entry points to the rough where discs would go.
The lake at the end of the course provided a much needed foot soak on a hot summer day. The bar/restaurant at the top of the gondola allowed us to buy a draft beer and sit at the picnic tables with our dogs, which was a great end to a fun morning on the mountain.
Like any mountain course, the views were spectacular. The creek crisscrossed underneath the fairways/ski runs through tubes spilling out into the lush woods on the edge of the fairway. Our dogs had a blast and plenty of cool mountain water to drink.
Cons:
Baskets were single chain and I had a few spitouts for birdie that would have caught on virtually any modern championship basket.
Tees are natural and were often a little rough. Rocks and roots have to be avoided and a one-stepper was often easier than a true run up.
A few holes, especially towards the beginning, were very easy, not posing much challenge to the average player. A midrange or a putter would have sufficed for 75% of the holes at this course for me, and I'm no MPO player.
Other Thoughts:
This is not the same course as previously reviewed. This course plays as a loop from near the top of the Elk Camp gondola.
I saw that you can borrow/purchase discs at a shop, but didn't actually check it out.
The $32 gondola price is steep for just playing disc golf. Our hotel included a pass to go up and use the climbing wall bc their climbing wall was not open. Otherwise we wouldn't have gone up there.
Would be a nice way to spend an off day from mountain biking if you purchase the season pass or day pass and are an avid rider. Otherwise, it's just not accessible/affordable enough to be worth it.
