Strong 9 hole course, repetive 18 hole course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Multiple Pins: I need to go ahead and make a disclaimer right off the bat. I'm reviewing this as a 9 hole course. It's easier for me to talk about the course this way. I struggled with how to rate this having played the former 18 hole setup. I think I would personally rate it higher as a high end 9 hole course with multiple basket options than an 18 hole course with 9 fairways becoming repetitive. That being said, the multiple pins are amazing for giving you options. You can mix and match as you go, pick one color for the day, or even play 18 by playing yellow and then orange. The yellows are easier pin locations while the orange pins provide more challenge; quite a bit on some holes.
- Beauty: There are essentially 3 creeks on this course ranging from very small, to average, to above average in width. This is probably my favorite aspect of this course. The two larger creeks are clear and flow over rocks while the smaller creek adds challenge. The larger creeks can come into play (depending on pin) on holes 1, 3, 7, 8, and 9. The smaller creek is in play on holes 2 and 6. This makes for only 2 holes with no chance of a water hazard.
- Baskets & Pads: There are a total of 18 Discatchers in decent shape on this course. Hole #2 has an elevated basket. Also, every hole features at least one concrete tee pad. I noticed an extra concrete tee pad on 3 out of the 9 holes but this course lacks the signage to indicate how best to factor these in.
- Amenities: This course features big benches spread out well on 6 of the 9 holes. There is also a practice basket and trash can near hole #1.
- Length: A few hole's long positions (4,5,6,8,9) allow a wide range of players to stretch out the arm for a bit of a challenge. This is especially true when the longer tee pads are used when applicable.

Cons:

- Signage: In my opinion, this is the biggest weakness of the course. First, there is currently no course map. After that, tee signage is lacking and random. Hole #1 has a pole with a #1 on it. Holes 2, 3, 5 had no signage at all as far as I noticed. Holes 4, 6, 8, 9 had signage if not worn with time. The signs that were present only described the numbers above and did not show the difference between the "two different holes." This is another reason I would consider this a 9 hole course. An overhaul of the signage would up my rating a half point for reasons listed above and for navigational issues listed below.
- Navigation: Due to the signage issues, this can become problematic for a first time player of the course. I found myself throwing the old #6 just figuring that it was another hole with no signage. Then I noticed that someone has sharpied "this is no longer a hole" on a previous tee marker.
- Traffic: Depending on which tee pad you use, you throw over a busy (at times) road on #9. There can also be park users in play on the walking paths at times and this course has been fairly busy any time I've played here.

Other Thoughts:

Not pros or cons:
- There is a new kiosk that has been constructed that looks great. However there is nothing on it. Hopefully this will be a course map soon which would help this course greatly.

18 Fairways Has Become 9. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 16, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

(2.420 Rating) (REVISED - replayed March 2021) A duel basket park style niner.
- DISSECTED - I first played Sportsplex in late 2017, about a month after first moving to the area. I thought the course was ok to perhaps good, but ultimately just not my style as it featured the open bomb play far too often. I decided to make another visit in 2021 as I had heard that the course got cut in half. Obviously not great news for those that live near-by and that had cherished this course. For those that know the old course, the half that is still here, is the front 9. Every basket on the back nine has now been planted as an alternate far placement for each remaining fairway on the front. Old hole (19's) basket has been assigned practice basket duty.
- CHALLENGING - Although the edits have softened up the course difficulty a bit, overall this is still a nice engaging course requiring plus 300 foot power and a touch of accuracy to score well. I liked the creek element factor on several holes. Hole (8) will really test the nerves. Hanging one left on this hole will throttle the heart rate way up. Hole (15) is well beyond 400 feet long and is one I would almost never birdie as an Intermediate level player. Hole (16) looks a little outlandish with its left cut requirement.
- AMENITIES - As noted above, duel baskets and a practice basket. A few holes have additional alternate basket placements too. Tees are concrete and are above average in size. There are benches on seven holes and there's an errant disc wall protecting the tee on (8). It appears that there is a new community board going up near the practice basket. Construction is almost complete as of this review revision. The baskets are older DISCatchers, but they catch fine. Basket (8) was leaning when I last played.
- HOLE VARIETY - For a nine fairway course on mostly flat open land, I'd say the variety is outstanding. Among all courses though, probably only average variety. Regardless, I was surprised by the number of discs I used on the course. Holes cut left and right. Distance variation is nice, from just shy of 500 to low 200s. Water comes into play several times and it will parallel along both the left and right side of the fairway. The tree coverage is almost entirely lightly wooded or open.
- TIME PLAY - On paper, I played 18 holes in 45 minutes. I did not do two loops for this one, but rather both holes right away on each shared fairway. I think a fast solo could do this in under 40 minutes, I wasn't racing.

Cons:

A solid 9 holer needing a signage update.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - The signage had degraded quite a bit when I first showed up 3 and a half years ago. Fast forward to the present, nothing has been done yet to address the issue and it has gotten worse. Only three tee signs remain, on holes (6), (8) and (9). Several tees have no number markings. Players on their first round here are going to struggle to get around if they don't have a navigational app.
- NINE FAIRWAYS - Several people I know, would no longer consider this an 18 hole course. There are only nine fairways. Each tee has two permanent basket options and fairway's (4), (6) and (9) have two tees on them. The butchering of the layout has shaved off more than a quarter point to the rating from my point of view.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - This con is actually not as bad anymore as the worst offending holes were on the back side. There is a walking path in play on a couple holes. A road is in play on (9). I had to pause my round a couple times to let vehicles and walkers pass. The landscape is fairly open, thus seeing a conflict will happen early. Overall only a minor issue now.
- ELEVATION - I've played flatter courses in Alabama, but not many. Maybe hole (4) or (5) approaches the 10-foot elevation change threshold. There is one basket in a raised condition. The rest of the elevation on this layout is not worth noting.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I actually raised my score for this category compared to my first visit. The front portion of the course that was saved was the better looking half imo. I liked how the creek element is mysteriously lurking along the fairway fringes and waiting patiently to claim a misfire. The fairway cut deep into the heavy woods on the par 4 placement for hole (14) looked awesome. Overall however, I still find the course to be on the back side of my rankings for North Alabama courses when comparing just curb-side appeal.

Other Thoughts:

Removing half of the fairways from any course is almost surely going to negatively impact the rating. The damage to this track however, although noticeable, was not life threatening. I originally scored the course a 2.701, thus the halving shaved off less than 3 tenths of a point. IMO, the course is still far better than the nearby Athens State course and to me it would also qualify as one of the better nine fairway courses in north Alabama. For those in the Huntsville area that had played the old layout, I do not think the course is worth the drive over to play again. Post revisions, it is still the same course, just more condensed. For those traveling along I65, this is a nice bagger stop as its right off the highway. Plus, traveling players can also easily hit Athens too as its just a 7-minute drive from this track. If I lived in the Athens area, I would play here all the time.

SNAC 2009 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Biggest pro: the benches are very big and nice.
-Unique nipple baskets, I call them. Explained more in the cons section.
-Holes 5 and 8 are pretty cool.
-The course flow is okay. It's wide-open enough to not cause much congestion.
-Restrooms available.

Cons:

-Elevated baskets. There were two holes where the baskets were elevated about 7 feet from the ground. They will cost you some stokes.
-Course design is poor with little elevation changes, and little shot variety is offered.
-Very few unique holes.
-Fairways are not clearly defined on most holes. You are generally throwing into a wide open field.
-Zero trash cans.
-The tees could be a little longer and wider for the big throws you must make.

Other Thoughts:

This just seems like a bad spot to put a disc golf course. The park is nice and all, but throwing across open fields with little obstacles is not much fun. Bring a long arm to the course and some stable discs b/c of all the wind. It was windy that day and I hear it is a lot of the time. Parking is adequate. The baskets are in decent shape, but I do not like the large yellow bands at the top.

Windy and Open! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is layed out pretty well given the area they had to put the course in. There are a few really really nice holes to test your skills with the disc. Hole 5 is a big anny spike unless you have a sidearm that will cut hard. It is on top of a hill and the basket is tucked in the woods to your right a good distance away. The trick is it's almost a horseshoe shot. You have to go high and wide to make the cut around the trees to just give yourself a upshot for par. It's wayyyyyyy tougher than it sounds for sure. I was lucky enough to three it myself! Hole 8 is also pretty tricky as it's a low ceiling over a creek with a mando tree making you go right of the tree. Just after the creek and tree is a field with the basket WAYYYYYY to the left. This again will require a major "cut" of the disc just after the tree. Holes 2 and 14 are both elevated which makes for some fun putting with all of the wind in the area. All and all this course will test how well you can control your disc in the wind with a bunch of OB to punish you if you can't throw correctly.

Cons:

There wasn't very many (if any) trash cans in the area. Course badly needs tee signs on poles to let you see where the next box is. I could see on a few holes where you would have no clue which way to go after playing a hole because there is only a concrete block in the ground with a tee sign laying/placed somewhere near by. All in all there isn't really a whole lot I have to say bad about the course.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in the area playing this course you should take the short drive down to Hartselle and play Sparkman park as well. It's worth the drive if you find yourself in this part of AL.

Long, Windy and Not Real Exciting! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a links style course set in a very large sports complex next to the soccer fields. Unfortunately much of the course feels as though you are throwing out in the middle of a soccer field. Like every previous reviewer pointed out, there's very little in the way of shade, so bring water. The wind was a factor the day I played. It sounds like it always is. Many baskets were placed close to creeks and streets adding to the overall challenge. The teepads provide for a nice runoff. I could've used about 300 ft. teepads on this course. I did see something here I've never seen before, some of the tee signs were screwed onto to large benches. Good idea guys. The course was pretty easy to navigate. The park and course was extremely clean and vandalism free.

Cons:

I found this course almost totally lacking in personality. The only hole I really enjoyed was the one throwing a hyser across the creek (ditch?) where you have to keep it low under the branches. I played early in the morning so the Alabama sun wasn't a factor but the wind and the boredom was. Much of this course reminded me of some of more boring holes on the U of A Huntsville course.

Other Thoughts:

My one true moment of excitement on this course was when some park maintenance men found a baby snapping turtle and showed me. My first Bama snapper!

long and without shade 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 6, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A fun course to work on your long drives. There area lots of long, mostly open holes with OB (roads, sidewalks and a creek) present on many holes.

The tee pads are great, there's good signage, and some very nice benchs next to some of the pads.

When I was last there, pin extensions were used on two holes raising the basket 6ft off the ground. Definitely a fun addition which adds a new dimension and challenge to the course.

Cons:

This course lacks shot variety. In fact, there is only one type of shot needed on most holes; long!

There is virtually no shade which is a problem due to how hot it gets in the summer so bring lots of water.

There are few birdie possibilities here because most of the holes are so long.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course to work on your long drive and up shots. If that's not what you're looking for, I recommend playing some of the great courses in Huntsville.
