Every Beginning Has A Tamanend 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ A quick 9-hole course for those who might not have time for an entire 18 holes.
+ Quiet local neighborhood park atmosphere.
+ Almost all of the distances are short enough to enable the player to focus on getting pars and birdies.
+ Mostly wooded holes force players to practice their accuracy.
+ Every hole has an anchored rubber mat for a tee pad.

Cons:

- No signs anywhere indicating which tee you are at, which direction to throw, the distance to the tee, or par on any of the holes.
- Some holes do not even have a 'next tee' sign.
- The fairways within the wooded holes are sloppy with deadfall trees, boughs, and natural waste all over the place. For some holes, I felt as though I was walking through the rough the whole time.
- The short distances are really too short. Were it not for the trees, there would be almost no challenge to them. Higher level players will likely feel bored.
- Really thick rough areas in some spots. Keep both eyes on the disc until it stops moving and bring gardening gloves to more easily reach through the thorns!

Other Thoughts:

Tamanend Park disc golf course is a fantastic place to learn how to play the sport.

To my mind, the stars of the show are holes seven and eight.
Hole seven tees off to an uphill climb towards a basket that is all but completely surrounded by evergreen shrubs. I see it as the most challenging because of how accurate the player has to be in order to set themselves up for the next shot between the bushes.
Hole eight is almost literally a tunnel shot. The same kinds of bushes that surround pin 7 form a semi-circle barrier on the right hand side of the drive. On the left are a few trees to give the illusion of a complete tunnel.

About the course as a whole:
The distances are short enough so that new players will not feel overwhelmed, but other players may find their brevity to be trivial.
The couple of hills will introduce players to what is possible on a course without frustrating them whereas more experienced players might want a more dynamic landscape.
The open holes in the beginning will get the new player accustomed to throwing at full power. Meanwhile, players that are more familiar with the sport will likely not notice the distance.
The wooded holes are very forgiving. The new player can easily navigate them while still forcing themselves to learn to throw evasively. The familiar player will appreciate a refresher course of the basics.

In short, people who have been playing with any degree of regularity for more than a couple of months might find themselves underwhelmed at this course while new players will appreciate how approachable it is.

So, if you would like to introduce someone to disc golf, this is the perfect place to go. It's not really meant for high-level play, but not every course should be.

Pros:

Located in a nice clean county park. Good Mach 3 baskets with yellow tape along the rim indicating the direction of the next tee. Next tee signs with arrows. Rubber tee mats are better than grass/dirt. Beginner friendly? (short finesse holes). Tyler St Pk, a world-class facility with two courses is nearby.

Cons:

Once you enter the park there is nothing to indicate where the course is located. I had to use my phone to look up the info on where to start.

No tee signs what so ever.

Mostly flat (except #6 which is slightly down hill and only 132' and #7 uphill shot).

#1 tee pad doesn't directly point towards the basket. If not for the group ahead of me, I would not of known where the basket was.

Rough can be very THICK in places with vines, stickers and stinging nettles (in the fairway of 7).

A large sand box with kids playing is too close to basket #9 which can't be seen from the tee. A blind shot that I found to be dangerous. I told the group behind me "don't throw" and to skip the hole.

Only hole #1 is longer than 231'.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not sure this course is beginner friendly without tee signs and the thick rough. I have played 11 'new to me' courses just this year and this comes up short in every category. None of the pro's I listed are directly golf shot related.
