I'm Not Going To Say Aliens Named This Park... But It Was Aliens.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.024 Rating) A small town niner in a disc golf dedicated space.
- CHALLENGE FOR A SMALL PARK - For a 9 holer in a small 4 acre park, the extent of the challenges are surprising. I'd dare anyone to run it on hole (2). I chickened out. Hole (2) is a quirky 440-foot par 4 requiring a 350-foot clear from the tee or laying up with a controlled 125-footer. The course seemed perfect for MA3 level players, but with enough bite to it to entertain MA2s. New MA4s will be pushed to develop a longer throw.
- VARIETY FOR A NINE HOLER- Slightly below average hole variety when compared to the average course, but for a nine holer on a somewhat simple site like this one, I was surprised. Nice hole length variation from under 200-feet to almost 450-feet. Hole (3) requires a hard skip to the left, while on (4) players are threading two trees and trying to keep short of the water just past the basket. The rest are lightly wooded or open with a mild 10-foot max elevation change.
- FUTURE TEES - Two tee areas had already been converted to a 5 foot by 10 foot paver tile tee by mid-summer 2022. I noticed more materials at the parking area during my visit as well to do a couple more. I figure they will also be pavers by the end of summer.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - Tee signs are already up and appear to be accurate. Many of the transitions are very short. No one is going to get lost here.
- LOCATION - This is the first course in DeKalb County Alabama. It filled a big hole on my course baggin map.
- TIME PLAY - Not even 30 minutes for my quick 2 some on a course with two other groups on it.

Cons:

Small park deficiencies.
- SPACING - As noted above, there is only 4 acres in this park. Tees and baskets get close at times. I don't think any of this is egregious, but it's tight, and discs are sometimes going to buzz other groups on terrible throws. Players will need to keep their head on a swivel here and be ready to yell "Fore!"
- AMENITIES AND EXTRAS - One tee, one basket, one tee sign. That's the extent of the amenities and extras here.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - 8 of the 9 holes are beginner friendly enough in my opinion. Hole (2) is not at all. It's about a 200-foot clear edge to edge. There was a family playing when I was here and they skipped (2). I would recommend to those involved to consider putting in an alternate tee or drop area along the left of the pond 125 to 150 feet out.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored the UFO course 30 percentile on my beauty ranking's ledger. The best aspect is the pond obviously. A couple of the trees are larger and have a stoic look to them. On the flipside, this is a non-descript small park with a small -town budget. No landscaping other than mowing. There is also the scar of decapitated trees along the left of holes (1) and (2). It's not a terrible looking park, it's just not above average looking from my experience.
- PARKING - Grass parking only for those that want to park close by.

Other Thoughts:

Finally a course in DeKalb county Alabama. As noted, this one filled a big hole on my course baggin map. Thankfully for the locals, this is a respectable small-town play. It challenges newer players to get better without killing their spirit except for one time. Good for local veteran players as well, as the difficulty is well past the cupcake level. Despite these praises, this is far from a destination level course unless players are coming from Scottsboro or Ft Payne. It sort-of reminds me of nearby courses like Lifepoint and Agape, but slightly better. Overall, I'm going with a low 2 now, but I gave credit for a full upgraded tee package in my rating score, thus I have projected it to a solid 2. The projection makes UFO an above average niner on my ranking's ledger.
- HOLE 2 - I liked and didn't like this hole. I like the temptation foremost. I thought to myself...Can I gun it 350-feet? Nope, my heart, guts and brain all agreed. A cool hole for those with at least a 400-foot cannon. For those with 250 to 350 foot arms, they will have to do an unsatisfying 100-foot lay-up. MA4s will likely need to skip it.
