A Small Victory Park

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Long and wide sturdy flat tees made of pavers.
+ Tee signs are metal anchored to metal. The diagram and information are basic, but that's OK at such a short course.
+ A surprising amount of elevation and tree cover.
+ The baskets are numbered, but...

Cons:

- ...The baskets are hard to see, even if you're looking right at them, and they're a little old and rusty.
- There aren't any navigation signs, but a course this tiny can get away with that.
- A few of the fairways border one another and/or present danger to other park users.
- I don't think this is any longer an eighteen hole course.

Other Thoughts:

Let me address that last con right away.

There are only nine established tee pads, which is a signal. If they intended for this to be an 18-hole course, why stop at nine? They're nicely built tee pads, mind you. I was both surprised and impressed at how good they were at this unassuming 9-holer. Udisc doesn't even classify this place as an 18-hole course, by the way. Closeby a park bench I found a patch of dirt that had the number 10 on a post sticking out of the ground. Could that have been the first hole of the back nine? Maybe.

But there really isn't enough space at this humble community park to accommodate a full eighteen. The longest hole here is hole4's 275 feet, and even that felt a bit too big for this place. There are walking paths and a playground to worry about. Space is the biggest concern here. As a 9-hole course, it's good enough, but it would be a bad 18-hole course.

So as 9-hole courses go, I wasn't disgusted. I actually quite enjoyed playing holes5 and 6 because of their gentle woodsy challenge with their own elevation features. Maybe I liked 6 a little bit better because it was a tempting uphill ace run! And the view from hole8 was nothing spectacular, but it's neat to have a nice glimpse of the course as a whole atop a hill, modest as it is.

Modest. That's the perfect word to describe this course. Victory Park is exactly the kind of place that I imagine when I hear the phrase "short, but sweet." It's well put-together and takes place in a pleasant park. The short distances make for lots of ace runs and birdies. It is a great spot to introduce newbies or let the kids run around. Don't come here seeking a challenge, though. Come here to take a leisurely stroll. Just remember that it's actually just nine holes.

it is what it it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 18, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Considering the small area, they did a decent job laying out 9 holes with a few alternate tees.

There are a few interesting holes.

Cons:

As others noted, there is no way you can play the entire course when the park is being used.

Needs either a course map/scorecard or descriptive tee signs. You can see two or more baskets from several tees, so navigation is an issue for the first time player here.

A couple of the tee markers are down.

Other Thoughts:

A course in a small public park, this place may be many peoples first exposure to the game. Therefore, keeping the holes short makes sense. Despite this, you will have to execute some shots.

Not worth a trip by itself, but if your playing another nearby track, you can pop over here for a look.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Located in a nice (but very small) park, it is a nice place to bring the family. There is a playground (literally on the course) for kids to play on.

While only have 9 baskets, 7 of the holes have 2 tee positions allowing for a toal of 16 holes (play the other holes twice for a full 18).

Good amount of variety with some tight holes, a few open shots, some short holes, and a few that may require a driver (300ft longest) with elevation up and down.

Pretty nice tournament run once a year in May that is very Amatuer friendly (victory park open)

Cons:

DANGER DANGER. Located on a very small park/playground. Some holes may need to be skipped entirely if children are playing. Some tees play dangerously close to other baskets. There were good intentions of having this course installed, but it wasn't well thought out.

Tees are all natural, uneven (except for a few that play off of pavement).

Several fairways are shared. (as are baskets, high hole has right of way)

Signs are relatively poor/non existant and it can be difficult to determine which pin to shoot at.

1 hole plays over a parking lot

1 pin is located 20 feet from a building

1 hole plays over a volleyball court (which is OB)

some holes can land in roads

Other Thoughts:

This course can be a fun time, especially if introducing someone to the game. There are actually a few holes that I really enjoy.

A good place to practice your Mid game, as most holes I'd say run 150-240 (in my estimate), with the longest hole being 300.

Do no expect too much from this course, but you can have a good, fun, and quick round here (again, you may not get in a full round if kids are on the swings, etc.)

A Quick Play but a Little Dangerous 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Victory Park is tucked away just off of the main road through Slatington so it's not too difficult to find. The park itself appears to be well-maintained and a good spot for locals to bring their children or have a picnic.

All of the baskets seemed to be in great shape.

Despite being a 9-hole course, having multiple tees for most of the holes is a plus.

Some use of elevation and trees does provide a bit of variety.

Cons:

Several baskets (and a few tees) are dangerously close to public spaces. Specifically, the putting circle for one basket is within range of a playground. Any errant drive could easily injure a bystander or unsuspecting child.

Roadways and parking lots border several of fairways, which is unnecessarily hazardous for the vehicles in the area.

Several of the baskets and tees are situated far too close together to be safe for other players on the course.

Victory Park is an extremely short course and not very challenging. The vast majority of the holes don't require much of a drive, but more of a long approach.

Although there are two tees for several of the holes, there isn't enough difference in the flight path or distance to justify multiple positions.

Signage was a bit of an issue. There are some landscape-type plastic markers indicating the tees, but no prominently displayed numbers on the baskets except for a 3" number that is not visible from the tees.

Other Thoughts:

Like most community parks, the course at Victory Park appears to have tried to do the best with the land that it had available. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that there was enough land available and some dangerous situations are present. That said, Victory Park is a good option for those looking to practice their approach and putting games, for families looking for a good place to play with their kids, and for locals that are new to the sport.
