Definitely worth playing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let me start by saying I have only played from the black tees.

The staff was extremely kind and inviting, and as travelers made us feel very welcome.

The course is beautiful and manicured, with man made water hazards, very well done engraved benches at each holes, mulched greens surrounding almost every basket, made mad tees, peninsulas, and mounds to add to the flavor of the course. It has a small pro shop that I believe they have intentions of upgrading, with all sorts of gear and plastic for sale, as well as golf carts to rent.

The course offers a lot of variety in shots, some very exciting and challenging holes, and most of all holes that feel very satisfying to play well. Between well guarded bunker holes, elevated baskets with OB looming behind, more than one peninsula/island landing zone you have to stick, baskets guarded by a grove of pine trees, and the mound shot, this is a course that gives you cause for celebration is you can pull off a great drive.

It definitely shows that the people who built the course are trying their best to create an incredibly unique disc golf experience, which was tons of fun to play, and is very exciting to see popping up.

Cons:

Unless you play small-ball the entire time, there is a solid chance at least one of your discs is going in the water. The people in charge are very good about retrieving discs and contacting people, but this doesn't do a ton for you when you're just traveling through. The water shots are awesome, but I would definitely recommend bringing some extra plastic with you.

There are a couple of holes that can feel a little gimmicky. The OB drop-off basket and the mound shot come to mind mostly. They're not bad holes, but a couple feet can definitely make the difference between them going really well and going really poorly. Definitely satisfying to pull off well, but they can also leave you looking at a bogey even with playing good golf.

The teepad on the dock felt a little odd. I had no trouble getting some good launches off of it, and enjoyed the novelty of it, but it was definitely a little awkward feeling at first.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this course does have quite a bit of novelty over just really great golf, but I think it's a good mix that makes the course a special place. Everyone there seemed like great people, and it's great to see someone putting so much time and effort into creating something so special for the world of disc golf.

It feels like someone set out to create a disc golf amusement park, and that's exactly what they did. It's extremely fun, extremely well maintained, and extremely entertaining, but I don't think it's the highest caliber disc golf course in the world. It's an awesome place that I would stop and play anytime I'm traveling through, but I don't think it's somewhere I would play very consistently if I lived in the area. Definitely worth playing at least once though, it's one of a kind.

Nice course but lacks replay value 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

VQ is a well maintained property with lots of extra "stuff"... I came to play DG though.

There are outhouses and small semi trailer proshop with a tent party area with games etc. Doesnt do much for me personally and BRP has nicer shop/snack shack in middle of course.

Benches on every hole and some trash cans throughout (some overflowing with trash)

Course has solid flow from hole to hole and easy to follow. Teepads are nice turf with good length and signage which looks great.

Cons:

Most of the holes are straight shots and you dont need many discs or unique throws to play VQ. Even the holes which have some "line shaping" required generally are just right turns.
Hole 2 for example ive now 2'd twice out of 3 times playing there with a simple roller and if i had any FH welp' easy.

Even with some built up hills and decks etc the course really lacks elevation of any kind. Even the huge hill which was constructed next to "lake lisa" actually makes the shot flat. You throw from one raised area to another raised area... Seems like a lot of work for an essentially flat ground line from tee to basket lol.

This course doesnt have holes that awe me as a player nor my buddy who has played most of the 100+. The replay value isnt there with all the different teepad areas being similar lines on a slightly shorter or longer distance. Why not use the foliage to the right or left in some cases and force a shot? adding distance or taking it away isn't the only point to different tees.

Ill never understand gold level type teepads being put directly behind a red/blue level. It doesn't feel like there is an established disc golf designer actively involved with how the pars and layout are set up.

The deck like teepads suck. Hate the floating dock. Feels just terrible to throw off of for such a long hole.

Vortex baskets have very heavy chains (some appearing already to have rust spots) and not a fan of them at all. A few putts literally pushed back out of the chains hitting basket on the way down and flipping back out. It was pretty ridiculous. (and dont tell me it was a bad putt....ive played DG a few times now)

This might be one of the most over hyped courses considering the cost of $10 per day too. My buddy said he doesnt care if he ever comes back and would play BRP down the road before VQ anytime. I tend to agree.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice property but the actual disc golf lacks pretty bad. If you're entertained by shiny things and feel like you need a golf cart to play a short 18 hole course to be cool well VQ is for you.

If you come to MN and want to play some fantastic disc golf well im not sure this is best the place. I would prefer more holes with some shorter distances mixed in to force unique shots. Lots of birdie-able holes even with my lame skillset. Compared to actually hard disc golf without the fluff VQ is like a 3 compared to a place such as Hidden Lake. I like DG these days over the fluffy stuff which was cool-- when we first started playing and had no idea what good DG was all about'

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signage on the course.
Turf tee pads are great for grip.
Fun course with some harder holes.
High risk & reward outcomes possible.
Great owners.
Course is improving with recommendations of players

Cons:

You can miss the driveway if not paying attention.
Lot of opportunities to loose discs in water hazards.

Other Thoughts:

Great all around course. Vision Quest and BRP go together well if you are in the area.

Good but could be better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two tee pads on most holes.
The tee pads are very grippy and feel nice.
Very secluded so it is not busy at all
Multiple lines but the RHFH is the preferred line for most holes.
Close to BRP which is another great course that is near.
A lot of water hazards which give it a lot of risk vs reward shots but only hole three comes to mind for me.

Cons:

It is pay to play and $10 per day which is a little high for most people.
Too many RHFH shots so not much variety.
The tee off for holes 5 and 18 do not add anything but danger to the thrower. They need to be wider and longer.

Other Thoughts:

This course was fun the first time through, but when I played it a second time, it just didn't make me want to play it any more. There wasn't a wow factor for me. I would rather have a great course with a great variety of shots instead of man made object to make the course feel different. It is still new so it could get better with time and improvements.

Another Minneapolis Winner 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

VisionQuest is a private course, located north of Minneapolis, and a few miles from BRP.

Artificial turf tee pads. One tee per hole. Plenty wide and long. I was at first sketchy on these tees, but the material turned out to have good grip. Foul line painted on the end of each pad. Overall, not bad...but I do wonder what they'd be like in the winter.

Nice, new red powder coated baskets. I (think) they were Mach X. Regardless, they caught very well. One pin position per hole. The baskets were all surrounded by nice woodchip "circles".

Lots of different shots in play here. A couple holes require some thought about drop zones, which is always nice. Many water carries here, which isn't something you see every day. They also offered paddle boats to go out and get your discs, if you desired.

The manicuring here is about as great as can be expected. Well laid out tee area and big manicured greens are a great touch. Tee signs were big and colorful, with line(s), hole number, and distance. Navigation was pretty simple, with a good flow.

Pro shop and porta potties near the parking lot, as well as a huge permanent tent, bags tournament setup and other amenities as well.

Cons:

There's really not much to complain about here, but the lack of multiple tees/pins on each hole is kind of a bummer. That's not a big deal if you're somebody that only plays it once or twice, but as of now, it somewhat limits the replay factor.

I'm not as big of a fan of the "over the water" tee pads as others in our group. Hole 5, out over the water, is visually appealing. Functionally, I'm not as sold. It felt a bit disconcerting to look back on my reachback, and be up over the water. Maybe I'm a pansy, but I didn't love it. Same for the dock tee on hole 18, although we were told there was plans to enlarge the tee area. These aren't really as big of a deal as that sounds, but they're worth mentioning.

Not much elevation, but for me, the abundance of water shots kind of evened it out for me.

There's a bit of a "mini golf" feel when you play VQ. Between zip lines, man-made hills, and tepees, you sometimes get a kitschy feeling. I think if it keeps the serious/fun line it has now, it should be okay.

Other Thoughts:

I can't say enough about the crew out here. You can tell Mike, the owner, really loves his course. The "crew" out there is totally into the property, as well. We felt welcomed immediately, and one of the guys gave us the guided tour around the course. Good stuff. I imagine Mike will keep improving the course, which should make this rating go up. I have to rate what I played, though, hence the rating.

VQ is a darn fun course to play. It's not crazy hard, but there is some challenge to be had, for sure. With BRP right down the road, this is about as good of a disc golf day as you're going to have. Another gem in the Minneapolis area.

Build it...and they will come. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

My friends and I were greeted by a very welcoming & friendly host. You can feel the passion & drive he has for this course after speaking with him. Thank you, Mike! You made our day!!

I was blown away by the grounds. Very pleasing look to it. Easy to navigate. The course layout has some beef to it. One hole, 9, is under 200 ft. but presents risk/reward putting with errant drives. And the other holes make you earn every stroke. The distances are fair. But your throw better shred the lanes, the trees present an awesome challenge of tree-nial. Coupled with 7 holes that play near or over water....this course can bring the pain.
New tee pad designs were definitely useful. Our first round was during a down pour. The astro turf is a perfect surface for wet weather play. A player can still get nice foot rotation.

The tent area in the parking lot is a perfect area to chill before & after your round with the sweet smell of fresh cedar wood in the air. Heaven.

A Course You have to Play!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course Layout, very well done. The launch pads, not concrete, so you don't slip, a special surface. The baskets are surrounded by number of logs on the ground to keep us less fortunate players still in the game. Great views on each hole. Very open on the sides, not too much tall grass to look for your discs. The Zip Lines are fun, and very inventive. How many courses have you been to that have Zip lines.

Cons:

Water is not my favorite, but I appreciated that fact that the owner has a paddle boat, kayaks and a couple of paddle boards to retrieve your discs if they have a chance.

Other Thoughts:

I hope to play again, if it's open to the public on the weekends. Thanks for opening.
