Nice Suprise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was expecting a hellish safari across open wastelands, but found instead a decent course worth your time on a lazy afternoon. Good back nine brings the stream and dense brush/trees in to play. Beautiful community park with all of the amenities (restrooms, playground, plenty of parking). The course largely keeps you out of the main walking paths, though you have to keep your eyes open on a few holes. Decent elevation changes and gullies come in to play. Enough long holes to air it out if you are working on technique or you have a big arm. Not crowded at all, so you can take your time and throw a couple of discs per hole. Nice that they put the tee number on the back of the signs, which came in handy several times. Pretty close to the 36 highway, so you can stop off on the way to Interlocken course or Boulder. Passive geese on the course don't attack you.

Cons:

Course flow is not intuitive for a first timer, and holes 18 and 1 are probably 1/4 mile apart. Best to start on hole 3 near parking. Baskets were tough to see, as they don't have the yellow band and are usually far away. Several baskets are 6"-12" lower than usual.

Other Thoughts:

Could be rough in the wind, but that's exactly why you should play it...we can't always have perfect conditions.

Pros:

Beautiful park with minimal traffic. Good use of the creek that runs through the park.

Cons:

Extremely dense under brush.

Other Thoughts:

This course is made difficult due to the large amount of plant growth. There is minimal if any maintenance done to this course.

Good mix for bombs and technicality 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great course allowing for power throws as well as adding a degree of technicality to your play. Wide open for the most part and hardly ever crowded. For the most part it is easy to find your discs as it is mostly well groomed.

Cons:

Stream flowing on one side of the course and the plant life may make it hard for you to find your throws if you venture into the hazard and in mid season is a huge breeding ground for mosquitos. Bring your bug spray!!!

Other Thoughts:

Nice long course with a good view of the mountains and relatively easy to find. Many people park on the south side and play hole 3 first and finish at two as it is easier to find.

Long Drives. Lose Discs. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice Baskets
-Many Long Shots
-Not many other visitors

Cons:

This course had no imagination, and had very few shots that were not straight. It was nearly impossible to find the first hole, and the confusion continued on from there. While there were a few long bombs, this fact was overshadowed by the bushes, grass, and brush that would consume your discs. Unlike others who seem to lose discs in the river, I spent far too much time searching for discs amongst the little bushes, grass, and cacti which seemed to eat every throw. On the back nine, I lost a disc in the thick brush by the river. There is also minimal shade cover from the sun on a hot day.

Other Thoughts:

If you like long, straight, uncreative shots... this is your course. You can bomb it and aim straight for the basket. The course seems to improve as you go along, and the back 9 get a bit better, however the lack of creativity and presence of "same-ness" is why I rate this course low.

Westminster DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-nice baskets and tees
-has potential to be a fun course with some interesting landscapes and some fun holes
-located on a nice park

Cons:

-the back nine holes were all right on the edge of the river and were not very much fun to play because of the risk of throwing into the water
-the first hole is a long ways from the closest parking lot
-the 18th hole ends about a mile away from the parking lot that was closest to the first hole
-the holes do not flow very well and many times when you are walking between holes you back track a lot
-the main problems are that the course was laid out terribly

Other Thoughts:

There were groundhog holes everywhere and they were pretty annoying but it does not really affect the play

Big Drives and Approach Shots 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 18, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Holes 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 offer nice lay-outs and are a challenge to birdie. Some new pins placments have pumped some new life into a sometimes forgotten Denver metro course.

Cons:

Still plenty of LONG wide-open holes. It would probably be a discouraging course for beginners who don't throw a consistent +300'. If you get wind it will kick your a$$ even more on the longer holes.

Other Thoughts:

I think it's easy to bag on bag on Westy but it is a nice lay-out and makes good use of park space that would otherwise go un-used. I have enjoyed knocking the rust off the early spring arm there.

Fun, but bring extra discs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is one of my favorite courses, but I just can't seem to hold on to discs here. There are lots of variations in the holes with some great long distance shots. Good tee boxes. Really fun course and I keep going back even with all the lost discs.

Cons:

This course runs right by a river that seems to have an amazing pull on my discs. It makes for some interesting shots, but the water is nasty if you decide to hop in. It is a pretty rough course so shoes and long pants are a good idea.

Pros:

Some tough shots throughout the course.
Can open up for big arms, and also tighten up for some accuracy.
Less traffic. Can play through as a single at ease.

Cons:

NO UPKEEP! I swear every time I've been to this course the grass/weeds/overgrowth needs to be cut. It's so easy to loose a disc here it's incredible; That being the hole layouts shouldn't make it so.
Lack of helpful signs. Layout can get confusing.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad place overall. If you know the layout, then it can be very fun.
If the grounds had better care, this course could be one of the best in this area.

Hot Day in Westminster 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Long holes
- Difficult shots
- Natural Vegetation and surroundings
- The terrain varies from long open plains to hills and across creeks

Cons:

- Foot tall grass/weeds everywhere
- Occasionally difficult to find disc
- Holes cross and overlap too much
- Pin positions can be difficult to locate

Other Thoughts:

Although I enjoy that the surroundings and plant life are native and natural it is very easy to loose a disc. Not a great course to play by yourself as you may need help locating a disc. The holes are long and difficult. Very fun though, especially withe people who have played the course before as some of the pins are hard to locate.

Eh. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice long holes, and a variety of shots. Best hole was #8. The obstacles were fun. The tees, baskets, and markers were all in great shape except an over grown 18th tee.

Cons:

The biggest problem with this course is layout. There are long walks between baskets and tees, and you often have to backtrack. Additionally, the layout leaves you stranded at the back of the park. This course forces some extremely risky shots. Very easy to lose discs. The stagnant water makes for many bugs.

Pretty Open Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Love the tee boxes...good length and the concrete holds up very well. Numbers on the back of signs makes it real easy to find the next hole. In terms of the course itself: holes 1-6 offer longer distances to make up for a lack of obstacles...great for getting the arm warmed up; some of the shorter holes (like 7, 9, 10, 14, 15) offer a some variety with the addition of water obstacles. Some of the previous reviews disagree with me, but I actually love the prairie field type terrain...especially when the fields have been mowed.

Cons:

Lack of maintenance. The first few times I came here, 3 ft. weeds dominated the fairways making it real difficult to spot your disc. Depending on the time of day and if the weeds have not been mowed, mosquitoes become a nuisance on holes 3-7. Some of the water obstacles are really stagnant preventing disc retrieval if one should throw a disc in the water.
Also, try to avoid coming after a heavy rainfall as holes 1-6 can become muddy in parts. And this is really being picky, but sometimes the chirping of the prairie dogs can become quite annoying, especially when they follow you on every hole.

Other Thoughts:

If the fairways are maintained, like on the day of this review, then the course can be fun. On the flip side, if the fairways are not maintained, I highly recommend going elsewhere. Also, being new to the area, many have recommended Badlands over this course...I don't get it. I much preferred the layout and environment of this course.

Great in the Offseason 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Long holes, good tees, close to my house

Cons:

Can get overgrown. Holes are set up around areas that can vary wildly between dry hills or swamps depending on the time of year.

Other Thoughts:

I was too harsh on this course originally, so I'm editing my review. I played it once when the water was high, and the prairie grass was out of control. I played it again today when it was in good condition, and the course played much better. On this sunny February day, it seemed more like a hidden gem. It's kind of a long walk, but it's a nice place.

Open to long drives 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Open areas for long drives.
Great clean tee boxes.
Grounds were well taken care of.
Easy to find your disks on the terrain.
Overall it is one of my favorites because i get to use a majority of the different types of disks I drag around with me. Keeps me from getting to rusty with the mid-range drivers.

Cons:

Hard to find or see certain baskets from tee box.
Water hazards can hidden by bushes or trees.
Can be fairly muddy when snow melts.
You have to think before you throw on some of the water hazard holes otherwise your going to be fish for your disk.

Other Thoughts:

Watch out for the critters that live in the area. Also watch out on windy days the disk like to glide due to open area.

Cool course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice concrete tee pads and baskets.
Detailed signs with distances and pin placements.
Signs have numbers on back making it easy to find the next hole.
Has multiple long holes where you can really bomb it plus various shorter shots that bring the trees and the creek into play.
Hole 1 from the pro tees plays over the lake making for a fun shot.
Hole 1 has an amateur tee so you don't have to throw over the lake if you don't want to.

Cons:

The weeds are really long in some places and a large number of the weeds are thistles or the annoying walk through em and end up with 50 seed pods attached to you.
The creek can eat discs on holes 9-18 and is deep in various places making disc retrieval tougher.
There are walkers/joggers that use paths through the first 8 holes.
After snow melt or heavy rain the course will be pretty muddy.

Other Thoughts:

Parking options:
I prefer to park by the soccer fields and walk to hole 1 behind the pavilion over by the lake, leaving a short walk up half of hole 12 to the parking lot after finishing the round.

You can also park on the west side of the rec center. The teepad for hole three is right next to it. Start there and finish with hole 2.

Very Average 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The scenery of the mountains is spectacular. The creek is soothing and the chirping prairie dogs are great. #1 (pro tee) over the lake is fun. #15 is over the creek and around a tree. #12 is off a ledge. The park is clean and well maintained. The tee boxes are concrete and big. 2 pin placements.

Cons:

The signs tell you distance, but fail to mention the location of the creek. Be careful on #14 because the creek to the left of the hole is deep and not easily accessed. The creek overall is deep for its size and murky at times. You need to survey the holes to know what you are throwing into because the signs fail to help. I played in the summer and the weeds here are unlike any other course. They are thorny, thick, and tall. The park is big so you need to view a course map for navigation and to know where to park. I don't see the point of having one hole with no trees and 400+ ft. of distance (i.e. no/slim chance of an ace) yet this is the case for 7 holes. It gets old after 2 holes and the rest of the holes are only okay. I just played in September and all of the growth is dead. There are trees by the creek, but few of them are utilized. I guess it wouldn't be much fun to hit a tree and have to go through the creek to get it.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in Denver for a short time, feel free to skip this course unless you are nearby. The lack of trees make the front 9 a bore. I recommend parking by #3, starting there, and finishing at #2. This method would really increase the drama at #1. The course is not too crowded on weekdays, but the park is nice so there are other parkgoers.

Johnny Roberts and Camenisch Parks Love Child 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Westminster DGC is located in a great park that includes baseball fields, fishing ponds, and walking trails. It comes complete with concrete tee boxes, and signs that are average but still handy. There are minor elevation changes, and the biggest difficulty factor is really the overall hole lengths and the creek that plays along most of the back nine.

Most holes are straight-forward, but it really isn't a negative since the terrain on many holes still forces to you to make an accurate shot. There are also some blind ridges on #8, #9, and #14 to be wary of, because any errant shot left may mean saying goodbye to your disc. Bottom line, if you are long off the tee or have a good mid-range game, you will feel right at home on this course.

BEST HOLE/S: #17; #18

Cons:

Where to park, how far to walk - what is the lesser of two evils? I would say this is certainly the biggest con since hole #18 and hole #1 are not close to each other at all. My recommendation is to park by #12 and walk to #1 since it seems slightly shorter or even start at #12 and then make your way to #1 after playing your last six. With a practice basket in this location already, it just seems to be the easiest. However, you can park by the baseball fields and start right on #1; however you'll have a long walk at the end - so just pick your poison.

WORST HOLE/S: #4; #5

Other Thoughts:

Northwest Denver course feels like a good old fashion infomercial to me. "Crowds at Johnny Roberts DGC got you down? Tired of the ghetto atmosphere and confusing layout that both Camenisch Park courses have to offer? East Interlocken Park and North Midway Park just to mediocre to satisfy your needs? Well then enjoy a combination of the bunch here at Westminster DGC, now 10% less confusing and less crowded for the first time player!"

Seriously, barring the long walk between the first and eighteenth Westminster feels like the perfect mix between Camenisch and Johnny Roberts, and offers so much more than East Interlocken and North Midway having a full 18 holes. With slightly smaller crowds and non-overlapping holes in more diverse setting - I believe this was just a better disc golf experience. Granted, this place still has its issues that prevent it from being ranking higher, but both experienced players and people new to the sport will be able to enjoy themselves here - I certainly did.

Decent 'Big' Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Hole 1 is a memorable drive right over a small lake, that demands you throw at least 2 discs just because it is so fun. Long holes which are rare to come by in CO. Good cement tee pads, great baskets, decent signage. Some very risky basket placements are possible next to the creek.

Cons:

Poorly maintained weeds have become obstacles that are not intended to be there, many are 5-8 feet in height and in certain patches are 10-12 ft in height. Many patches of weeds. Not great for bringing out the wife, or others without a 'big' drive as several of the holes are 400+. Front 9 has very few obstacles and basically is nothing but big open shots that you can take just about any line on.

Other Thoughts:

This could become a much better course if some trees were planted on the front 9, and the weeds were better maintained. We like to start at hole 5 in order to make the start and end of the course both hit the parking lot. There is a long walk between hole 18 and hole 1, but we usually take the opportunity to throw a couple bombs in the soccer fields.
