Enjoyable Little Rec Course By The White River! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

White River DGC is a pleasant little course which has 11 holes playing on side of the river, one # 12, which crosses the river and then the final 6 which play on the other side. The course starts close by the popular swimming pool. There is a kiosk with various bits of local disc information including a course map and a picnic table. The tee pads are natural but are very serviceable for this course. The signs are just small laminated paper ones on little sticks. The baskets are Discraft models which are a little difficult to spot in the shady woods here.

The course plays at a recreational level. Many holes play around 200'. There are two sets of tees, the longer Blues and the shorter Reds. Often, there's quite a big difference between the distance such as 277-145 on # 10. The shorter Reds play as more of a beginner course. Lots of Aces to be had on those Reds.

White River definitely has that old school, course from the 90's feel. The plain baskets without the yellow bands and the shorter distances as well as the natural pads all give this retro feel. But it's a very enjoyable course regardless.

I liked # 9's basket placement on top of a small ridge, just inviting some rollaways. But I think most everyone would agree that # 12 is the signature hole here. It's only about a 125' foot carry over the river but the basket is downriver from the tee making it a 195' throw. Darn, I hit the top of the basket! Would have been a fun little Ace. And the river is about as clear as you'll ever see anywhere. So inviting!

Cons:

The area where the # 1 basket sits is confusing. There are three baskets in close proximity so it's easy to throw at the wrong one.

On # 14, there is a tree broken down right over the Blue pad. It's in the way enough so that it effects the way you throw off the pad.

Chances to land in the river on three consecutive holes 12-13-14. Although, today, it would have been quite pleasant to get a little wet and retrieve a disc.

Other Thoughts:

I might be a little biased here rating White River since I graduated from White River HS many years ago on the complete other side of the country.

I have no problem giving this course a solid rating of 2.5. It gets a lot of use. Serves it purpose for it's target audience. It's not a course for advanced players or those players who want to throw 400' drives but there are courses around for those guys. This course is geared toward the recreational player and I think they've hit home run with it.

The Gnomes Await You 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two years ago, this course was nearly wiped out due to flooding from Hurricane Irene. Today, you wouldn't know it. The bridge has been rebuilt and the local volunteer effort has helped get the course back into great shape.

The result is a fun, technical course playing around a river which offers players a great way to cool off after a round.

There are definitely some memorable shots here, including one over the river (which, at 190' is easily reachable by most players).

Course flow is pretty intuitive and easy to follow. The only tricky part might be the long walk from 16 to 17.

Cons:

It's very short. There really are no chances to throw big drives. In fact, I only used drivers on two tee shots.

There are a couple holes that have little to no fairway defined. There are definitely some opportunities for bad luck to ruin an otherwise good shot.

There are a few holes that are so short they're almost laughable. The tee shot feels more like a short upshot after a good drive on a typical par 3. Hole 11 especially is almost a jump putt from the tee.

Other Thoughts:

There really is something for everyone here. Beginners will enjoy being able to reach the pin from the tee while more advanced players can enjoy deuce-or-die golf that tests midrange and putter play.

Overall, this is a great place for a fun, low stress round.

Look out for the gnomes, they are well hidden throughout the course.

Trees Trees and more Trees! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

If you like short holes with trees everywhere, then this course is made for you. Located in the middle of Vermont.

Cons:

Trees! There are too many trees. I know it is Vermont and are crazy about trees, but I think on a few holes they should thin them down a little. Bring non-natural colored discs with you in the fall. Leaves everywhere, making it hard to find your discs.

Other Thoughts:

I am not too fond of this course at all. It seems to be a little over crowded with trees, and found the holes to be too close together. And the co-op in town is closed by the way. So there is no place in town to get replacement discs when you lose them in the leaves.
