Movement in top 10

The local politicians must think quite highly of it if they're content to tear it out and replace it with a cemetery.

Not sure what that particular area is like, but Europe in general doesn't have a whole lot of open spaces in or around cities. Those were filled up with cemeteries centuries ago.;)

Yet hardly anyone mentions the homer reviews that have rocketed a course to the top of the 9 hole rankings...such bs.

Cuz maybe you are the only one to notice? It does look like a pretty cool course and Location Location Location!

Edit: Nine holers just don't get the attention as the 18 holers.

It's location is nice, the veiw is good, but most 9 holers to me are on a scale of 1-4, and it could garner a 3.5 to be fair, maybe higher on a good day.

Problem being close to the ocean is flooding and wind, amongst other issues. Not knocking it, but it ain't the best '9' on the planet. Most reviews are one timers.

Must be a lot of death putts on that course!

I played Hobbs Farm again today on the way back home from Memphis and it blows my mind that course isn't top ten. It's got the total package for a course and it's so. dang. fun. I also found the map by hole 1 so I updated my review; still in a weird, got to go find it spot, but it's still by hole 1 and the practice basket.

Public Service Announcement: Get ready for John Houck's new course, Parc des Familles, located just south of New Orleans, in Marrero, Louisiana. It is the premier Cypress swamp, wooded course ever created. I played it for the first time yesterday. Out of the 569 listed courses that I have played, it jumps straight into the top 10, of which none are really ahead of the others. The only cons that I could see anyone writing are that it lacks any elevation (it's south Louisiana) and that the finishing holes are a little underwhelming (mainly because the level of phenomenal-ness starts out very quickly and peaks somewhere in the middle rather than at the end). It's regal beauty is breathtaking, however, especially if you have an appreciation for the South Louisiana landscape. I am so lucky that this course is an hour and a half drive from my house!

Played it for the first time today, thought it was excellent. Definitely a unique environment and everything you'd expect stylistically and quality-wise from a Houck course.

Still sifting through my impressions but my initial take is that it's a fantastic course, just a touch shy of the truly apex courses I've played (Selah Lakeside, Sugaree, Idlewild, Whippin' Post, Moraine, Harmony Bends). Not sure if it's the absence of elevation or something else that will likely keep me from giving it a 5. Design has loads of meaningful decisions to make on a throw-to-throw basis. I found it to be a really fun course to play. It's decidedly technical while not unforgiving.

It's also noteworthy for the three sets of concrete tees + excellent drainage. Had lots of rain this week and the fairways were still comfortably playable. There is even drainage built into several fairways! That blew my mind.

The course also seems like my best chance yet to see an alligator, which I've failed to do despite living in New Orleans for something like eight years now. :D

It's on my list for the New Orleans trip I'm taking with my girlfriend this fall, totally stoked to check it out!

Feel free to drop me a line if you'd like a guide or just some food recommendations. This is a city to eat your way through!

Hobbs at 19th, that's still something special. The second highest rated course currently in the Southeast. A personally favorite of mine as well. sj, I don't know what specific route you're taking but you must be going near or thru Birmingham. I highly recommend checking out Inverness in Birmingham Metro.

Just now catching up-

RE Nine holers: I would like to throw Iron Spike DGC in Palestine, TX into contention. It's incredible for a 9 holer, but doesn't have the reviews necessary to get it on the top list.

RE PdF: I agree about the lack of elevation seeming to keep it from the pinnacle of courses, and can't wait to see someone else review it.

RE Gators: Come up to the north shore (I'm in Covington) if you're not seeing them at PdF! There's plenty at Instigator, or one of the state parks.

totally! absolutely the best 9 holer i have played. i played all 27 pads and never once considered doing otherwise, even as the sun started to go down. makes me wish i lived on the south end of DFW instead of the north end. i'll get to compare it to Parque de la Raza and Hellyer in San Jose next week but i doubt they will edge it out.

four reviews, four 4.0 ratings, and three are TRs. we ain't joking about this course!

That's on the list for Saturday actually; same deal as Hobbs, slightly more than halfway to my destination. From Aiken, it's pretty much a straight shot on I20 to I22. Thanks to all the construction, I do get on I65 for a bit in Birmingham to make the connection though

Thanks! Yeah, I think we're going to try to stay at one of the old hotels in the French Quarter, and the plan is definitely to eat our way through the city!

I'm surprised by the courses that you think are better than Parc des Familles. I haven't played Sugaree or Harmony Bends. I would agree that Selah Lakeside and Idlewild are on the same elite level. Moraine was cool but I didn't even think it was the best course in Pittsburgh (Deer Lakes... which I actually would put on that elite level). Whippin' Post might be most shocking though. I wouldn't even put that course on my initial rough draft list of best courses I've played. Don't get me wrong, it was a good course. But I've played 100+ good courses. I don't see how it even compares to PDF.

There have been three courses that have blown my mind over the years. West Park (the first course that I played with baskets in 1979) Hudson Mills (the first course that I played where they teated disc golf like a real sport and was put in and maintained to a higher standard in the early nineties) and most recently Hobb's Farm (the new gold standard in my opinion).

It's funny how tastes differ. Hobbs Farm is a special course, indeed. They really got all the little things right (and the big ones too)... but it simply didn't have enough "wow" factor to get my 5.0.

But I do think it's about a 4.75 or so... And the only way to get ratings like that are for some people to think it's a 5.0... which I can't fault anyone for.

On the other hand, Toboggan just handed me my @$$ again... that course oozes wow. But I totally see how many don't see that as a 5.0.

Still, if you've been wanting to know what that course is like, now's the time to find out. Available for casual play through July 5th. Cost is $10 park admission + $5 pay to play. Fly pads are nice and level, and the park is more receptive to DG'ers playing it than I can ever remember.

Its hard for me to believe there are too many 9 hole courses around better than Mason Sports park. If it had benches, trash cans and a couple different pin options(there are several holes that have pretty good space for long/short locations), I could see it getting plenty of 4.0 ratings. It already has 8.

Best niner I've played...hit a 3.5 from me. That said, there are a couple of 18 hole courses that I'd give a 4.0 just to the front 9.

Idlewild's original back9 would probably be worthy of that... at least?

Need to get you back down here to play Osage again. I think that 4.0 could go up to 4.5 once they get the tee signs in. Not sure if you gave it a bump for its potential, so it might already be worthy of a 4.5. Its changed a bunch since you were there...

I get what you are saying. Courses like Georgia Canopy Tours etc might have a little more "wow" factor probably because of the more extreme elevation. Hobb's just blew me away with how perfect everything was! I have only played the original course at Kensington and that was nice. I would love to play the new (to me) course and get my butt whooped by Toboggan at least once!

two days ago I played Foundation Park in Illinois, rated at 4.52, which isn't too far back from Hobbs' in rating, and it's a similar style course. Hobbs absolutely just blows away Foundation. More beautiful, more signature shots, more amenities, more challenge and greater hole diversity. I would completely disagree with the lack of wow factor at Hobbs. hole 2, hole 4, hole 8, hole 13, hole 17. put those holes on any 3.5 rated course and it jumps to a 4. The think whats holding Hobbs back is the lack of homer reviews and the fact that the bar for a top course keeps getting raised. 280 courses in and personally Hobbs is my number 2. Unfortunately it fell just shy of my 4.75 threshold for me to make it a 5 rating. agreed Thrembo, Hobbs does every single one of the little things right. Its amazing.

Hobb's just blew me away with how perfect everything was!
