How to throw a Valkyrie?

Hey Guys,

I recently purchased a 166g Champion Valkyrie and I have had some issues throwing it. aLthoug it is a few grams lighter that what I am used to I do not think thats the problem. I find myself overpowering the disc a lot of times when I am just out in s field throwing, or I am having no control what so ever of where its going. I also do not feel that I am getting the distance out of it that I could. The speed that the Valkyrie is is definately not the problem as I throw a 171g Star SL for my maximum distance drives. Any tips would be greatly appreciated because I feel like I just wasted my money right now.

Thanks,
StrikerME02

I think the disc you got is too light. Also a head wind really affects the Valk. I would suggest you upgrade to a Wraith. 170 weight.

the Valk

I 2nd the wraith too, i use a valk for upshot 150 -250 and use the roc. but the wraith is a great disc and my next step up is the destroyer. i always
carry three wraiths different stages and two destroyers also different stages.

I have a 160 Champ Valk and it is very touchy, You have to have the right conditions, little wind and a flat, smooth release. If you try to throw it really hard, it just seems to bend in your hand and fade hard.

Valkyrie is a good disc but its hard to master, once youve got it down though it helps you alot. What color is your disc? I guess innova red disc are alot more overstable and blue/yellow discs are more understable. I have found this to be the most true with valkyries more so than any other disc.

I use my Champ Valk 171 g for forhand anhyzer shots (rhfh). It has a ton of glide and can be a great disc for long shots with intended glide.

The wind will turn it into a sky roller though. It is a great rescue disc too. I wouldn't play a round without one.

Valks can be touchy and turn over easy, they're not very good going into a headwind either. My main driver is a Star 150 Valk, it flies forever with a tailwind or no wind but I do have to put a little hyzer on it or it's too flippy.

Is there any science behind your claim? I find it very hard to believe that a dye has anything to do with stability ratings.

Just trying to give you a chance to explain before somebody calls you crazy.

May I humbly suggest a Champion Groove? Thrown backhand with a nice wrist snap, it will give you a loooong, predictable drive. I had the exact same issue with the Valk, and when I lost it in some thorns at Giles Run, I didn't even bother to go look for it... honestly, I was glad to be rid of it.

A valk has more high speed turn than your SL. I throw both frequently. The SL is MUCH straighter, and much harder to turn into the ground. The Valk however, is a little longer if you get the full flight pattern out of it. Less accurate though.

Don't try to kill it.

I learned to throw with a Valk more than four years ago and still carry two in my bag (171 & 173). It was the disc that allowed me to break 300ft. A smooth flat release or just a hint of anhyzer and it will S-curve to some big distance. However, I tried to throw an SL several times, couldn't get a decent throw out of it, and finally gave up on it.

Maybe it's just not the disc for you. Could be the plastic too. I just don't seem to throw the Star plastics well but love Champion. It's what's kept me away from the Destroyer - I love my Force and Flick though so I don't think I'm really missing anything.

I carry two valks.... one is a 150 and a 173..... I love the control of both of them..... I am also becoming more of a fan of my wraith but noticed I need to put more into the wraith than I do the Valks..... nice good and flat with a quick snap is generally how I use my valks.... although they cut nicely with just a little tilt of the rim.....

Release with plenty of hyzer and let it flatten itself out instead of having it plummet to the ground with too much anyhyzer.
I have a 148 Valk that I like to practice technique with

Oops. That was SL. I was talking about a TL.

Your Valkyrie is too light for you. Get one in the 170's. My 175g Star Valkyrie has been in my bag a long time, and if I get a hold of the full S-curve pattern it goes farther for me than a Wraith. You might also try practicing hyzer-flips with it.

I throw mostly RHFH and use a valk as my primary driver.

Are you talking about BH or FH?

For FH with my valk, I just make sure to keep my elbow in, the disc flat and put some snap on it and it glides forever. It holds a tighter, straighter line now that its beat in some than it did when new.

As may have already said, maybe try a heavier valk. I can't control 150g discs but something around 169-175 is my prime weight. I get the most control out of those weights and they dont go haywire on windy days.

I know that you might feel like you just spent this money and now can't use the disc. It is frustrating but sometimes it is just trial and error. You can always trade up for a heavier Valk or a different disc altogether (this option is available on this site). I had the same experience you are having with the Discraft Avenger, I thought it was the disc for me and it just never paned out. Maybe it was too heavy for me at that time or maybe I was just throwing it wrong or maybe it was just not the right disc. In any event I traded it for something I could use a little better.

How far is the Valk going? Unless it's over 400' I'd suspect it's a problem with you, not the disc. I've measured a couple ~420' throws with Valks and didn't have any problems with them being overpowered.
