Overstable Midrange??

I don't know what to get to throw those shots where I need a big curve, but not all the distance from my drivers. My Coyote is my favorite midrange, but it's pretty understable and I can never get it to do a hard turn for me. I have Rocs in a few various weights and plastics and a Wasp that I like, but once again, it's too stable. Any suggestions???

If a roc and wasp are too overstable I'm not sure what would fit in there. Throw the Roc a bit more after a few rounds it will be perfect.

DX Roc. They are legal to 180 grams because of the bigger diameter so they can be heavy. At 180 they are really over stable while in new condition. I use 175-174 g Rocs. Straighter. KC Rocs are more overstable, and again you can use lighter ones if you want. Super Rocs are really overstable at any weight. Buzz's work well and Squalls are pretty straight. Champion Sharks are great and durable.

Maybe that's the problem with my Rocs...they are too old and have become too stable. I have a 180 Super Roc in Pro plastic, a 165 Champion Roc, and 2 DX Rocs at 148 and 150. All of these discs are at least 5 years old...if not 7 or 8...

I would say, get something like a Gator or a Cro. They are smaller diameter than the Roc and Coyote, so they do not float as much and they are good for tight turns or throws where you have to get out of the woods or go around a tree. If you have a shot that went into the woods, or you have a shot where you have the pin within 100 feet but there is a low tree you cannot shoot under, try a banshee or whippet.

I'm assuming by "too stable" you mean "too straight."

A new DX or KC Roc will probably help out a lot. If you haven't already, you might want to try a faster, overstable disc to complement the Rocs like a Predator, Firebird, Banshee or Spirit. Most people find they have a range similar to a mid but you can throw them pretty much as hard as you want on any sort of hyzer and not have to worry about them flipping. You can also put them on an anhyzer and get a good amount of D. A low, tight S with a big fade using a Spirit used to be one of my favorite shots.

Drone. REALLY overstable, if you had to play in a hurricane you'd wanna throw a drone. Try the cheaper plastic cause the FLX Drones are kinda tricky to master. I carry two Drones. FLX and Pro D(or something like pro d)

lol yeah I misunderstood your question. If you want something over stable and very consistent go with a Gator.

throw with more hyzer. The disc will flip up flat, but it will float left. Overstable won't go farther left, it will shoulder to the ground faster though.

I asked this question a month ago and ended up buying a Buzz, a KC Pro Roc, and a gator. I ended up keeping the KC Pro Roc and the Gator in the bag. I haven't found another disc anything like the gator. I can get it to go straight if I forearm it into a headwind, but otherwise I get a guaranteed hyzer curve without a lot of distance. I use it a lot when it is windy.

I agree. I have a Coyote. Just throw it with more Hyzer, and that should fill the void you have. Also, Champ Coyotes are more over stable than the DX or Star.

I have one for sale if you want it.

Just got a FLX Drone and its awesome for wind duty or any midrange shot needing a hard fade. I want to grab one of the Z fundraisers.

I agree the Gator is the disc for the job.
I didn't really elaborate. Forgive me. I was at work and had a meeting in a couple of minutes. I've posted this quote from Disc Golf Review several times. I think it's a great description of the Gator.

"The best way I can explain it is like this: I try to imagine throwing a ball, or rock, or something with no glide, toward the basket. To me, a midrange with a lot of glide will tend to carry too far beyond the basket, and will probably skip 10-20 feet past where it initally hits the ground. I just throw the gator exactly how hard I think I should throw a ball, and the distance is almost always perfect."

I had a FLX Drone in my bag for my overstable mid and it worked out great sometimes and other times really bit me in the butt. It can be tricky to throw because of the dome on it and the huge lip underneath. It feels a lot different than any other disc that I throw. I just picked up a CFR Gator and am hoping that it will work as a good replacement. I have heard a LOT of good things about the Gator. I hear that Star plastic is slightly more overstable, but the CFR that I picked up is overstable enough for me.

Well I think you guys have convinced me to get a Gator. I'll also be on the lookout for a drone...I'll have to get one of those fundraiser discs in elite Z...
