How can a review of a course be so far off and still be allowed

I've written 2 reviews. One because a designer of the course asked me to after seeing I had marked it as played 2 weeks after it opened. I wasn't going to write a review but since he asked I did.

As soon as I posted the review he contacted me and was not happy with my 3.5 rating. I'm pretty sure he never read my review and was just complaining about how many stars I gave it. The reason I say that is because I called it Dayton's answer to Idlewild once it's completed. I would think a designer would appreciate a comment like that, if they had read it.

Once the PMs stopped and he was convinced I wasn't changing my 3.5 stars I got 2 thumbs down with 14 thumbs up on that same review. On top of that I wrote the review, as I said, only as a favor to him because he asked.

I agree that it is a well written review. Also, it is a Pay-to-Play course, so that may have also influenced the reviewer's opinion.

Trying to censure unpopular opinions? Really? Consider the review, get what you can out of it, and either choose to take it to heart and make changes or ignore it. Don't get butthurt because someone didn't like the course. It happens.:|

For a course that just went in last year it think it looks good. When we installed La Raza here in 2007b it took a few years to get the course refined and cleaned up. I was incredibly tight and demanding now its just a little less tight but looks better.

Docsmock, I know exactly how you feel. Below is the latest review of Idlewild, which makes no sense to me. She(I think its a girl) likes it but doesn't like it. I can live with the 3.5 rating but give us something that we can improve on or fix or keep it in the fairway. Her rating only dropped it down .1 of a point but it takes about 10, 5 disc rating to move it back to 4.79. Just saying.

Pros: I really like this course, but it is not always very well maintained. They're adding new holes for example, but when I was there the new holes had not been bushwhacked I suppose. and BUSHwhacked not mowed. This course is just a bit too wild for me in some places. The 1001 foot hole is amazing, for example, but sometimes the grass on the outside is as tall as you are. I know you aren't suppose to end up over there, but we all know it happens.
That being said, this course is not worth all the hype to me, there are better courses in the area (simply because someone cares for them more) but if you are in the area this is a beast you should look into.
There was a tournament there recently, so it is probably in decent shape around June 2012, but probably only temporarily.
The new holes include a lot more water, which I think was really missing from this course previously.
Cons: Hardly ever well maintained in some places, but immaculate in others. The new additional holes and some other holes have rough that is definately that.
Other Thoughts: Very nice area that this park is in, there's a dog park nearby also.

In my opinion, Idlewild is one of the cleanest and best maintained courses in the country. Boone County parks does a great job and we do our best to keep it litter/debris free.

I contacted her and got an even more confusing response. I'm pretty sure she's local too.

Looking at the reviewer's other reviews, he/she seems like he/she plays a lot of nice courses, has reviewed them fairly, and simply didn't love your course. If your ego is so fragile that a 3.5 review causes this much consternation then I don't what to tell you. You've got a fantastic looking course that pretty everyone who has played it loves and you're upset because one person honestly didn't? He/she says right in the review why the rating was received and from looking at the reviewers favorite courses, this is a player that happens to like more open, ball golf like courses. The review system is based on EVERYONE's opinions not just the ones that fit popular opinion.

There is a way to get "bad" reviews removed, as I had one of mine removed for Camden Park II in Milan, Illinois.

I played it when it was just put it and it was exteremely rough going through thick woods and wasn't cleared out fully as it was a brand new course. I gave it 1/5 because you needed a spotter on every throw, let alone every hole, and it was very difficult to navigate each hole, let alone the whole course! It was so bad my friends and I couldn't even play the full 18! We all agreed it was the worse course we had ever played, although we agreed that once it was broken it a bit more we would give it another shot.

The review was removed because you probably said you didn't finish the course (which is a requirement).

I had several of my reviews removed, high and low ratings, because they did not fit the trend. The low review I gave was of a stupid tight wooded course which has high marks from the course designers and their buddies. And its funny because you can see some of the same guys slamming other courses for being tight and wooded, but not this one. It just goes to show you there's alot of dishonesty out there, and when someone has an opposing opinion its assumed someone has a personal issue or something.

You share an IP with the designer of some course and there were at least two other accounts associated. I left some unrelated reviews since I wasn't sure about them but removed the "bad" ones based on email feedback from locals. It was a suspicious situation of pumping up one course (a bunch of 5's) and crapping all over the "competition". Two accounts you shared an IP with were banned based on that whole thing (with their reviews also removed) and I haven't heard anything questioning the ban so I can only assume that I (and the people that emailed me) made the right call. I'm not pointing fingers and if I was wrong about it, I apologize but it seemed to be more than a coincidence.

Back to the topic at hand, reviews are rarely removed. Unless it's a non-review, a suspicious situation (ie. the above), the person didn't complete the course or it is just a blatant attack on someone (or another review) it will stay. I don't know how many reviews have been removed but of the 40,000 currently in the database I feel safe saying less than 50 over the years the site has been around and those fell under the categories above. I don't "review" reviews to determine if they're worthy, they are all worthy as far as I'm concerned. It's someone's opinion even if most don't agree.

IMHO decksnap's 1 star rating is just as legit as Acey's 4.5 star rating for that course. The OP should do himself a favour and learn to take the bad with the good. Whining about a "dilemma" doesn't help anything.

Aw, poor you. I guess this is going to become the "whining about bad reviews" thread.

I get smashed on for my sunset park review and I stand by it. I hated that course and almost everything about it, I was definitely in the minority though as most folks like this course. I'm not on here to get a little review badge I am on here because I love disc golf, so at the end of the day just report the reviews that don't fit the acceptable criteria and let Timg sort it out.

I can guarantee it's just because you stirred up regional rivalries with your "Sorry to piss off all the natives with my review but this course just can't stack up with anything like in the bay area.". If you hadn't said that it wouldn't have got so much crap. Gotta remember that most of the folks that read your reviews will be locals. It's too bad cuz it was a decent review with valid points.

Am I the only one who can see the little red thumb and 'send PM' features? Those seem like a heck of a lot easier solutions to this than all of this drama.

While I hate it when people use the review feature as an outlet for their personal problems, I hate it even more when somebody calls one of those people out in the forums because it was a course they liked. Let these folks get their unhelpful votes the natural way, just like the 3000ish or so other bad reviewers get them.

We all just hate everything that doesn't conform to our level of ease and familiarity. Anything that's out of our comfort zone, or isn't our hometown course, is bad.

Oh for sure. I thought that would cause some issues but I did it anyway lol. I did just update though.

Having just read the reviews, the one in question obviously stands out from the rest.
I would think that a sensible person looking to play the course for the first time would take that review with a grain of salt.

The thought of silencing views that we disagree with concerns me.

Or the site could add a feature permitting users to comment on particular reviews. It would Increase the amount of info available on courses and spark debate without clogging the forums.
