1025 Putting Game - my first experience and accountability thread

Hi everybody!

I took a few minutes today to lay out my own version of the 1025 disc golf game in the back yard. I used an in-step basket and (most of) a can of spray paint to mark each distance.

The game includes 6 putts from each incremental 5' distance from 10'-35'... and I set up the triangle configuration as recommended. By doing so, I definitely had significant elevation, sun, and wind variance between stations.

Here are my results from my first game: 415 points, out of a possible 1025 (hence the name of the game!)

The nitty-gritty detail: I made all 6 from 10', 4 from 15' (really?!?!), 3 from 20', 4 from 25', 2 from 30' and 1 from 35'... I made 4 "first" putts, and 3 "last" putts.

Overall, the game took about 15 minutes, and I plan on playing more in the coming days. Hopefully posting my scores publicly here will help hold me accountable to some amount of improvement, or at least shame me if some of you post your results. :)

Even with only one game under my belt, two spit outs from 15' and only 50% from 20' were a couple of glaring parts of my game that I need to improve on.

Here's the link to the site where I found the game: http://www.discgolfbasketstore.com/1025-discgolfgame/

A buddy sent me a link to this today. I played once this evening while making dinner and chasing the kids around the yard: 405. The 30/35'ers kill me- here and on the course.

I've played this game quite a few times. Forgot about it for a little bit but here's what I just hit 5 minutes ago.

All 6 from 10 for 80 points
All 6 from 15 for 115 points
All 6 from 20 for 150 points
4 from 25 (including first and last putts) for 110 points
4 from 30 (including first and last putts) for 140 points
4 from 35 (including first and last putts) for 160 points

Grand total 755. Not bad for no warm up and just putting.

Theres an app on apple that makes this game even better, I have it on my ipod

I'll have to try this next time I practice in the backyard.

Ok, apparently I'm an idiot or my brain is decidinng not to function...but the math isn't adding up for me.

Please explain how hitting all 6 from 18' gets you 80pts, when the breakdown is only 60pys at best:

2 putts from each spot: hit your first=5pts, your second=5pts, and both gets you 10pts. So if you hit all 6, that 20pts at each area, which is 20x3=60pts...

If you follow the same math all throughout, you max at 545pts....

I don't question the game, but obviously I'm not computing somthing correctly.

^look at the bonus colum, in the OP link, thats how
instep baskets are terrible for spit out, i want to put an inner chain on mine

The way I would add it when hitting all 6 from the 20' marks is as follows:
#1 @ 20 + 5 (25)
#2 @ 20 (45)
#3 @ 20 (65)
#4 @ 20 (85)
#5 @ 20 (105)
#6 @ 20 + 5 + 20 (150)

Played again this morning before work... 390 no warm up this time, and I think that my score dropped to reflect that. After spitting out short putts in my first game, I took my time with the shorter ones and focused... that said, I was *terrible* from 25' out.

6 @ 10' = 80 pts
5 @ 15' (including both) = 85 pts
5 @ 20' (including last) = 105 pts
2 @ 25' (including first) = 55 pts
2 @ 20' (including last) = 65 pts
0 @ 35' = 0
Total Score = 390 pts. :(

This is exactly the shame-inducing post I was looking for! Thanks!

I bet you'd beat me in weekly-doubles league as well with that type of score, which is exactly why I want to hold myself accountable to improvement over this winter with this game.

Can anyone make a diagram of some sorts? I'm having trouble picturing how this would all lay out.

Do you mean the layout of how you'd putt or a breakdown of the scores?

For the layout, it's really simple. Go mark three places that are 10 feet away, then repeat the same for each distance until you've marked out three putting locations at each distance. It works best if you have an area that is open so you can account for all types of wind. Even better if you can add elevation to that mix.

Here's how I set up my game at home (click for larger version):
1025 home set up.jpg

I had a fence and a hill to work with, as well as plenty of mature trees. I chose the location of the basket up to have a 30' putt and still leave me just enough room in front of it... because of this, the other 25', 30' and 35' putts across the diagram ended up on (or over) the ridge.

A little on the crude side, but should explain the "triangle" (yellow) and the 6 locations (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35) per leg (red).

Took me a minute to figure out the point system as well, they left out the part about the footage also being equal to the points.

So from 10' you get 6 putts. Say you make all 6 of them.
1. 10 pts (+5 bonus first)
2. 10 pts
3. 10 pts
4. 10 pts
5. 10 pts
6. 10 pts (+5 bonus last) (+10 bonus all putts)
--------------
Total of 80 pts for 10' putts.

Do the same for 15 ft putts but use 15 pts per putt plus bonus points (+5, +5, +15). 6 x 15 = 90 + 25 bonus = 115 pts total for 15 ft putts. So on and so on. Would have been nice if they specifically said footage = points for that round. Apparently that is simply implied.

Personally i love that my practice basket only has 1 set of chains. Perfect putts stay in. Questionable putts don't. Perfect for practice. If you add chains to make things stick, aren't you possibly making your practice not as demanding? allowing for more errors on course by having equal or possibly worse catching devices on course?

edit: And i plan on doing this little game this evening, never seen it before, but sounds like a nice weekly addition to my putting practice (almost like a "how well has my practice worked this week")

I personally agree with this theory.

I like that my practice basket appears a little bit smaller (vertically) and only has one set of chains to catch the discs. Really makes me focus on the putt and doesnt allow me to get away with anything questionable. Then when I get to a course with real baskets they appear to me to be larger and have a lot more chains. I like being able to play tricks on my own mind and give me an extra set of confidence when at the course, even if it may all be just in my head.
