Weekend experience & DG Image

I wanted to point out the observation from a 17 year old. That she was concerned about the people she saw. No one threatened her, or was rude to her. She didn't interact with them at all as far as I know. It was her reaction to the "image" (what she saw) of the people coming to play DG. If the DG community doesn't care about that image - so be it. I'll continue to play with those that have similar outlook on life that I have and leave the others alone. Just don't complain when others jump to the same conclusion she did. What's the old saying - "you never get a second chance to make a first impression."

Roger, while i agree with 99% of what you said in this thread, it's pretty obvious you never took your daughter to a Redskins/Cowboys game! :p

I'm 29 years old, have been married since I was 20, have one daughter who is 7 and NEVER use drugs...despite many lingering physical ailments from my time in Afghanistan. Does this make me the "older generation" you speak of? Does the fact that I have standards and adhere to the Laws of the Land make me sort of bad person? Is it distasteful to you? If you answered "yes" (which some of you surely did in your heads) then perhaps that is the problem.

And what was up with that dude calling people "breeders" earlier in this thread? Isn't that a slur based on someones sexuality? Man, I love this thread but it has gotten weird.

KniceZ, i never took offense from your op, moreso from the us vs them mentallity that both the thred and boards seem to take.

I'm sure someone will dig back through my posts and point out the contrary - but I didn't mean to come across as a "betterthan". I honestly don't object to drinking or smoking as long as it's done discretely. It is afterall (at least for now) illegal in most public parks. Just ask some folks that I play with locally.

Not to throw stones but Craftsman, lumping all the older generation together is just as inappropriate as lumping all the youger generation together. I don't have drug or alcohol addictions, I have no debt problems, I've only been married once (over 25 yrs). In fact in my entire extended family I don't know of anyone that fits your description. Come to think of it, maybe I have lived a sheltered life, I wish everyone did.

Ya, to be honest, growing up in LA, I saw stuff a lot worse than this every day just riding the bus to UCLA for College - people using bad language or writing it on the bus, smoking pot, or even shooting up, gambling and the occasional masturbator. So it really depends a lot on the environment you were brought up in. I still consider myself pretty sheltered in comparison to others I knew then too - I had a Mom and Dad for instance. :)

So the entire disc golf community needs to self-address its image because one 17 year old girl saw some dudes she considered icky?

I don't know man, I think we'll have to have some conclusive research done first, maybe form a sub-committee in charge of forming a committee to identify image problems. :|

I know which course the OP is referring to. I play whenever I'm up that way. It's a one of the best courses for beginners... Most likely why you saw all sorts.

You'll get more casual players than professional/tournament players 7 days out of the week. I've seen park rangers/ security there a few times but they're not walking around and patrolling the course. Mostly sitting in their truck near the entrance.

breeders = those that make little humans that grow into big humans....

...that play disc and build courses for non-breeders to use exclusively

"Breeders"....I like that. I'm a straight married male, but have no kids nor do I ever entertain the possibility of having them. So am I a "breeder"?

I'm curious as to why a 17 year old would be amazed at seeing such stuff as you describe Roger. I would assume that most 17 year olds would be used to seeing people drinking beer and consuming or smoking other substances. I would also assume that most 17 year olds would have heard profanities come out of young males. At 17, I remember going to parties and seeing and hearing everything under the sun. Nothing was taboo back then and to be honest nobody gave a crap what anyone else was doing. At 17, we were studying our butts off to get into college; playing sports till we couldn't stand up because of exhaustion; partying our azzes off and enjoying our youth; and trying to get as much (sorry if I happen to offend any ladies or you sensitive males) pu$$y as possible. All the time be respectful to adults and those who were older than us. Yeah, we fought, yeah we cussed, and yes we questioned authority. When did everyone turn into pu$$ies is my question. When did everyone's feelings get so damn sensitive? Am I wrong here or are we raising a bunch of over privileged pu$$ies to take over this world once we get too damn old to run it? No offense to you Roger or your daughter. I'm sure you're a wonderful husband and father. I'm just saying are these kids too sheltered these days?

Sorry about the breeders comment, meant to be more clever than derogatory. Simply a term applied to those who have children, but probably never should. Parents who are emotionally, financially and/or intellectually unprepared to bear offspring, then, when surprised at the commitment, think society should kick in and provide some assistance in the above arenas. Perhaps thread drift, not necessarily applying the idea to the OP, just an observation on peoples take of others behaviors and the impact on their children. Again apologies to an offence. Cool thread though.

It's a great term! I knew what you meant and this post confirms that. I'm going to add it to my regular repertoire!

Breeders!

What your daughter saw was more the flavor of the city of High Point (or the Piedmont Triad since you never confirmed location) than the flavor of disc golf.

This part of NC is unique in that it is known for manufacturing as opposed to agriculture. this was the furniture and textile capital of the world up until about 10 years or so ago when everything moved to China. But even before that this part of the state was known as basically one giant "Mill Hill". The connotation of this term is to the pejorative. Now that the Mill is gone you still have the Hill and the people that populate it, which in this case are as craftsman put it tatted/pierced pot smokers raising kids. But this caste of human is not new and neither is the distaste for them by the gentil. I guess this was just your daughters first viewing of the "working class" in their native environment...

Perhaps the point wasn't that she hadn't seen that stuff, or was amazed by it, but was surprised her father wanted to be associated with it.

Ok...well said but he wasn't associating with that kind of individual...it just so happens that there is a wide variety of people who like to play disc golf. Some drink, some smoke the ganja, some are straight laced and play for the thrill of the sport and competing and we all cuss on the course from time to time..Just because a few people do things that society deems wrong (and I not condemning anyone for living their life the way they see fit :p) doesn't mean I'm not going to participate in something that I love. I think that we need to move past these stereotypes and work together as humans to make this world and sport better. If you don't want to drink a beer while playing then by all means don't. If you don't want to partake then don't. If cussing bothers you then I suggest growing the "F" up and learn to live with it. And if someone is on the course "enjoying" themselves and not hurting anyone then leave them the hell alone. Sorry for the rant...I just get sick of all these...OMG....I saw this on the course today or I saw this person doing that while he/she was playing...You can find the same crap on any golf course in America....it doesn't matter if it is disc golf or ball golf or baseball or basketball or hockey...everyone is drinking, cussing and doing whatever it is that makes their lives a little easier to cope with...just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it wrong for that individual. As long as they stay away from you and yours I say let everyone do whatever the hell they want to.

I used to work in a pizza shop. There was so much cussing and pot smoking it was ridiculous. I wonder how some people would react if they saw what goes on behind the scenes of just about anywhere

True. As I read it, she was associating those guys with disc golf, and that's the image she got of disc golf. She asked why he would want to be a disc golfer, if that's the image of disc golf. Sort of guilt-by-association.

I'm a libertarian and would agree, IF I had a guarantee that neighbors or other park users wouldn't complain to the parks department and eventually affect this course or future course projects, and IF there were kid-friendly and family-friendly courses in the area where the growth of disc golf can be promoted absent the poor behavior.

In a practical world, it's not true that poor and illegal behavior in a public park doesn't hurt anyone else. And I'm not talking about hurting sensibilities. I'm talking about real losses to the disc golf community.
