Highbridge Hills - Wisconsin

I think I'm taking Stardoggy's advice and going in Sept/Oct this year in hopes of decent conditions and mowing.

I wouldn't want to go in Spring, especially now that there's no grass on a lot of holes.

Drat. It was likely not going to happen, but I have an early summer release from teaching and was maybe thinking of just going out there with my boys for a couple of weekdays. I wanted to hit it before stuff either gets too gnarly from being overgrown and or is destroyed by the latest concert. If it is going to be wet, not going to be worth it.

It was so wet when we were there. I'd pack differently, but I'd do it all over again for the courses. It has to be so much better when it's dry.

The best time of the year to go (imo) is late September or early October before the leaves fall.

Bugs aren't bad, course is usually dry, temps are good and chances are you'll have the place to yourself.

Plus it's usually mowed then as well.

I've found the course(s) to be in good shape for, or following, holiday weekends (Memorial Day and Labor Day).

It'll most likely be buggy (mosquitoes) and wet in the lower elevation portions of the property, I'm not sure how bad it will be this year given the straight up mud that has replaced lots of the open grass fairways.

I can't say firsthand yet as I haven't made it out there yet this year, but that's speaking from past years' experience.

Either way don't go right after the darn festival, which is July I believe?

Last year we went two weeks after the festival. What a disaster the place was. The courses were still playable, but garbage everywhere, and Gold 8-11 was a torn-up mud pit. It was like playing island hopping with our throws in an attempt not to be sucked down to our waist in mud.

Hell in late September Gold 8 was still a mess, tire tracks in mud for most of the fairway

So got there for the first time this year, and played only Blueberrry.

Pros:
-there was less chunked up mud than there seemed to be most of last year; the fairways seem to be healing alright. But that won't mean anything if they tear em' up again in July...

-pads are still food, nice benches still on most holes, baskets still in great condition, still a top 10 course IMO

-someone is clearing brush and trees - there were some downed trees that were obviously cut by a person, so that means someone is trying to keep up with overgrowth

Cons - there were a few things that really irritated me

-very wet in lower areas (to be expected)

-first was the fact that another one of my handmade signs is completely gone (hole 16) - that makes at least two missing signs in the span of a year (Granite hole 15's is gone too).

-some genius thought 5 feet in front of hole 4's basket was a great spot for a fire pit. They even took the time and effort to drag one of the benches all the way over there (I moved it, it was very heavy) from God knows where, and block the hole entirely. Wtf.

Anyway it was still a fun round at a beautiful place, and a reminder to enjoy it while we can.

Was just there this weekend

Even with the typical cold and wet weather up there this time of year, it was an awesome HBH experience :)

Blueberry is WET, but that's actually a perk for that course... as long as you don't go in the deep stuff :p The water drains to the bottom, but it's into ponds. Hole 7, and trail to 8 tee was pretty muddy.

Woodlands had a lot less mud and standing water than anticipated. Maybe due to the grass fairways!?

Bear was in the Second best condition I've seen it. The only muddy spots were between hills in the low spots, where the water drains down... but that course is mostly about landing zones, hilltop to hilltop. Standing water only on 1 and 18, cause of it being flat on top

Didn't play Gold or Granite

I want to go again this year (to play Bear) but my buddy booked the worst fricking time. First week of August. Hottest, buggiest time of the year, and only like 3 weeks after Infrasound...so I'm torn about whether to go or not.

Suppose I will wait and see how people say it's doing after this year's Infra before deciding.

I oughtta get out there a few more times... July's coming fast, and we know what that means...

I was fooling around with some filters on the top 25 courses and Blueberry came in at #3 and the gold course at #10. Interested in knowing how the regulars who have played there recently, feel about those ratings?

Blueberry is a fantastic mix of holes. Up, down, around, left, right, distance mixes. Great design, fun from beginning to end. Also, Hole 2, while simple, is one of my favorite holes, anywhere.

Gold is what you'd get if you mixed Blueberry and Granite, and then added some distance.

Both are in my top 10 of courses played out of 300. Granite Ridge isn't too far behind.

Not sure I qualify as a regular (RR and Idle are the only top 10s I've played), but I'd put Blueberry and Gold in my Top 10.
