Ok guys, I am fairly new to the forums and about 4 months new to Disc golf. I am struggling quite a bit with my drives. Im a bigger guy and feel like I should be able to hit some good distance. I am about 6'1 250 and cant seem to get my drives consistently over 300. I am more comfortable with my forehand and not comfortable with my backhand besides when putting(which is my best part of my game) and on mid range shots. I rarely drive with my backhand and feel like it's a necessity. I plan on going out to the field tomorrow, if the rain holds off, and taking a video so you all can critique. I really think it's my timing. Just for some kicks here is my bag line up.

Drivers
Leopard
ESP Nuke(Only one I can semi control on backhand drives, but not consistent)
Champion Groove(Barely used)
Avenger Z
Flick Z(Only driver I really throw that is consistent with my flick, still doesn't get over 300 most of the time)

Mid-Range
Buzzz(Only mid-range I really use and love)
Shark

Putters
Zone
Aviar
Banger-GT(Favorite putter and I am beginning to get better and more consistent with, dont really wanna change this unless I get a soft Banger)

Any thing will help guys. Splitting the $100 mystery box this week from Dynamic Discs with a buddy so adding more disc to my bag soon. Thanks for everything guys!

Why do they all have Grooves?! lol

Anyways, I would recommend dropping the Nuke, Groove, Avenger, and Flick. Pick up a Teebird, Trak, or Volt to couple with that Leopard if you have to have a driver in the bag. Until you can throw the fairway drivers 350' you probably shouldn't be using the really high speed stuff as they mask form flaws.

Being a bigger guy doesn't mean you can throw further than smaller people. Just like traditional golf, disc golf is driven by proper form. If you don't believe me, go look at videos of smaller guys throwing. I am nowhere near your size (5' 10" 145 lb) and I max out a little over 500'. Don't believe me, ask Jay Dub, Old Bassman, Hipster, Harkeypuck, el Duder, or DyeingtoPlay to list a few. Get your form figured out then move to the big guns again.

The thing is I am not really sure what I am doing wrong, but I plan on posting a video of both my throws tomorrow if I can get in a session before the rain. My friend just picked up a TeeBird and we are both working on our game hard this summer(playing 3-5 times a week depending on schedules) so I plan on picking up whatever I need to get better. My layups and my short game is decent. So lose the distance and go for fairways?
Oh and does plastic matter right now? Should I find Star or Champion?

Yeah, I would say use slower discs until you are getting cleaner throws. Also, getting something like a Comet will help you to see in the flight of the disc if you have clean form (wobble when the disc comes out is typically bad). Posting a video in the form analysis sub-forum can help you to learn what to work on. This video helped me a lot when learning to improve my form (the driving part starts around 9:40). Also, Will Shusterick recently made a pretty good driving video.

That video helps a ton! I do realize I rotate on my toe and not my heel now that I think about it. I feel like I try to throw it a mile every time and miss my release point and it kills my drive, on backhands that is. On forehands I am really not sure, I do my best too keep my elbow close to my body but I am missing something. I will get the videos up ASAP!

I was sorta in your position when I started playing, Im a big guy 6' 230. I took peoples advice on here and ditched all my high speed drivers. Helped my game immensely, and still dont use high speed with the exception of my Villain which i just got 2 weeks ago, for spike hyzers and big skips. Because I used mids only for so long, my form improved and now I can throw my fairway/control drivers around 425. Ditch highspeed until your form improves and you are ready. And plus its always nice when you outdrive a bunch of huckers with a boss/nuke/groove with your buzz.

You only need 2 discs right now. Bring the banger and the buzz. When you can get over 250 feet with the buzz, try the leopard.

Exciting times are ahead

Buzz and Banger sounds good. I think I am going to go strictly backhand until I get my form down, maybe a few forehands to get outta situations and get the feel for it since I never forehand with it. Gonna throw it quite a bit tomorrow.
By the way, Will's video helps alot. Thanks

All that!
When I first started playing I didn't know what I was doing either, and I did about the same thing, with a Vulcan, and a Nuke SS!
I've since pulled everything high speed out, the fastest thing I carry is a 9. I commonly throw a Amp, Volt, Teebirds in varied weights, Ascent, Eagle, Shocks, Stag, Underworld in Fairways. I haven't quite figured out which ones work the best for me, that's why I have and posted so many!

I wouldn't limit yourself to just two discs yet. If I were you I'd keep the Leo, Flick, Buzzz, and Banger. With those four discs you can throw a wide variety of shots, especially if you have a serviceable FH.

Don't worry about distance. Worry about throwing the disc and having it land where you envisioned it.

Learn to throw that banger well. The banger is a pretty good driving and approach putter. Learn to putt with it too. Also get to a shop and feel all the putters. See if there is anything else you like. Putting and putters are crazy personal from person to person.

Also learn to throw that buzzz and snag an x/esp comet (or a really beat up dx roc). They are solid.

Should I go buy a new Roc from a store around here and start using it and I think a local outdoor store might have a comet but not sure. I planned on picking up a comet eventually now for sure now. Rain isn't gonna hold off today guys :/

Sorry for back to back post but I couldn't edit. A buddy of mine and I are splitting the Dynamic Discs mystery box and I saw you can request discs. I thought about it a little and thought I would ask yall what would be some good discs I should recommend. I was thinking:
KC Roc
Any Soft Wizard(Really want to throw one)
Ion(Heard great things)
ESP Comet
TeeBird

I have 7-8 discs depending on how many we get so give me a better list if you can think of one!

Tee-birds are going to fly a lot like avengers. So I'm pretty confused why you should be dropping the Avenger for a Tee-bird. I'd suggest an X or D Avenger instead of a new mold.

Sidewinder, You can never go wrong with a sidewinder.

Not sure if it has been said or not, I didn't feel like reading the whole thread but drop down to disc in mid 160's for Your backhands. When I started I had the same problem 300' was my goal and just couldn't get there. My issue was not pulling through as fast as I should have and throwing nose up. I slowed my run up down to a walk up and worked on my pull, once I did this I jumped up to about 320'. Then I worked on the rest of my technique to continue gaining in distance.

This just happened to me this week! Work on slow and smooth with the footwork, and a nice fast acceleration of the arm at the end. Then, as I hope to see for myself, the xstep, hips, legs, and other concerns will iron out for more d.

Sounds like you want to do what we all do when we start out. We think it's the disc that's going to help us, when it's really just us. The Ion is a great disc. But you don't need any new discs. Learn to throw what you have.

Or buy a bunch of new discs, searching for the "one." That is more fun anyway. :)

Just went and play a quick 9 and I had another rough day off the tees. Putting was inconsistent but I hit a few 30-40 foot ones. Driving I barely hit 200. I used my buzz and my banger a few times off the tee.
Not 100% sure how to put the videos up but here is the links.

2nd video is all upper body sorry about that. I feel like I try to throw everything so hard and I end up overthrowing the discs and release is really late and it leads to AWFUL throws. Any tips?
