Salient DG Spec 1 Shoe

The DG spec 1 was made specifically for disc golfers in mind and as bring the first offering in there shoe line function is number 1 concern. There are no disc golf specific companies that have ever made shoes but there have been shoe companies attempt to turn one of there shoes into a DG shoe. The difference is SD will cater to the disc golf community and attempt to bring the best possible shoe in terms of function, comfort, and aesthetics we can. The only way for this to succeed is by supporting a fellow disc golf company that is trying to serve a purpose to the overall population of players.

With that said any critique is a good critique and we have had some great feedback so far and are happy with the moisture wicking ability and most of all durability of the toe cap and sides of the shoe.

I'm one for functionality before looks. That said yikes! Ill hold off final judgement for a better pic.
I hear you loud and clear, but I don't think the two are necessarily mutually exclusive. Taste and style are largely subjective, and there are some shoes that are so clunky or ugly that their somehow fashionable. For example, one maker of shoes that's fairly popular with many on this site (I'll refrain naming the brand out of respect for this vendor's thread and theur support of this site), all have a somewhat goofy looking toe cap, but somehow they pull it off, and the whole shoe looks OK.

That being said, I can't imagine any features that would so enhance the DG1's functionality (i.e. relative to competitive products) as to overcome their appearance. Salient would be well served to find a way to incorporate the desired features in a shoe that's more attractive to most people. Competition is a good thing, and I like to small companies succeed, but I'd be surprised if this shoe sells enough to be a profitable product for them - just my opinion. :|

I like functionality over form. I like shoes, and am sponsored by a shoe company (TRUE Linkswear), and these look fine to me. I'd prefer them in obnoxiously bright green (my running shoes are all bright as heck), but maybe down the road somewhere… :)

Then again, I owned an Aztek. Green, looked like a tank. But… removable rear seats, TONS of storage space, rear seat tailgate, fit three kayaks on top easily, 32 MPG…

I'd wear them. Would love to test them out. 10.5 E

Thanks Bogey, the shoes pictured are the protos we have been wearing and we do expect the aesthetics to change a bit but the overall function of the shoe has been as expected.

The difference in the shoes you mentioned is that they have a small rubber sole with a larger shoe last (the larger soft rubber part that the sole is glued to) which leads to the soles peeling away on the sides or toe when dragging your foot. We used a full 1 piece rubber sole to take that problem away along with napa leather above that to give it more durability.

Good day

If I'd known that, you'd have been walking to your hotel in Columbus!* :p

*I think I live in the Aztek capital of the world right now. I've seen dozens since moving when I hadn't seen any in years.

Another one here for form over function. I look forward to these becoming available as I tend to destroy shoes very quickly.

Aztek, ewww lol

Mock me all you want. I heard it all. :D And I was completely fine with it. It served me quite well when I was single, and my wife quite well the first few years we were married - we bought snowblowers, lawnmowers, entire sections of cabinets, I moved twice with my Aztek, shuttled around an energetic Weimaraner (there isn't really any other kind), etc. :)

Function > form.

P.S. The Aztek was basically a Buick Rendezvous. Just had a more "angular" body.

P.P.S. Function > form, but form still matters somewhat. :) Let's be real here… I just couldn't find a car/truck/SUV in 2001 or whenever it was that had SO MUCH FUNCTION for the stuff I was doing in my life at the time.

P.P.P.S. I'm looking forward to trying out these shoes, but I still hope they've got a low heel drop value - 4mm or less, please.

I truly loved the idea behind the Aztek. It was the implementation I disliked. I think it's the Groove of the automotive world. That said, it had the potential to be one of the greatest disc golfer road trip vehicles ever made. The tent extension is particularly amazing.

What do I know though? I drive a MINI.

At least make them up to 15's please

fingers crossed...but I bet we will get hated on like every other shoe company does.
out of curiosity what do you sport now? I need new shoes and not sure if I want ot go with Keen again.

And what's the heel drop on them? If they come with inserts, can they be removed and/or replaced to reduce the heel drop?

The heel drop is close to neutral. The simplistic reason is everyone has a different shaped foot (arch, forefoot, mid foot, heel). I see a lot of patients with severely pronated feet, pes planus and compensated talocrural joints and there is not one shoe/insert that works best for everyone. The foot has a natural tendency to have as many points of contact on the ground to act as a rigid lever therefore changing the natural shape of someone's foot becomes uncomfortable especially when first wearing orthotics or a shoe with an extremely high heel or arch.

So not to split hairs we made the shoes as neutral as possible which lends its self to being a little more comfortable.

Hopefully I answered your question.

A small insert is included right now but that could change and it is removable.

13-15s are huge sizes and what many don't realize is that for every size a mold has to be made for that size and it runs 1000s of dollars each. At this point we will begin with only a few sizes 9-12 and expand as we see a need. If we have enough interest we will make the investment but as of right now it's a pure numbers game.
