[Gateway] Gateway Putters

My Magic says 175 and weighed at 174...could be my scale...or his, but accurate enough.

A strange fact:

My wifes discs are consistantly within 1g of the weight written on them regardless of brand
My discs tend to be upto 3g off regardless of brand

Figure that one out!

I've had two black SSS (magic and voodoo) that were both WAY more flexible than red SSS....they're no more off than any of the others, weights and plastic.

Steal her discs...actually, +/- 1 gram isn't bad. It's the 3 that gets me. FYI, Marshall Street does claim to weigh their discs. I bought 2 Gazelles, 175. They came in marked 172 on the back from Innove. They put their own label on them, marked 175. I weighed them on a very accurate lab scale. 174.7 and 174.6. Go figure.

Maybe ill bring my scale to the disc golf store next time. I bet someones done that before.:D

It is a well-known fact that Gateway has a lot of inconsistency in their discs. They are always experimenting with runs of discs.
I have a SS Magic that is floppier than the SSS Magic. Go figure.
I weigh most of my discs but all my Magics. They are always within a gram of advertised weight. I can't explain your weight discrepancy. Send Dave McCormick an email. He'll answer you. He's very knowledgeable and very concerned with customer service, in my experience.

My biggest thing is this: I have no issue with experimenting and I realize no process is perfect. I work with plastics and in manufacturing. Just label flexes and weights accordingly. If you are shooting for a 175 SSS and it comes out 172 SS, then stamp it that way. That's all. Easy.

But I really like Gateway putters. 4 models/flights in 5 flexes and grips, plus premium. Talk about being able to fine tune what you want. Really caters to the short game while the others seem to be driver focused.

Now I gotta go weigh the rest of my discs. I did for the first few but stopped.

It's just like having dinner at a restaurant. A guy can order the exact same entree as his girl, but hers will always look better

I'm gonna have to weigh all those Gateway putters I've got at the shop tomorrow. I don't know why I haven't already, I've weighed everything in my bag already.

I just think it would be nice to get another voodoo like my SS voodoo. I have yet to find any gateway discs at my local shop with the same feel. I actually wish he would put the number at which they would rate it for softness on the bottom. I think the SSS seem to be a bit more consistent, but then again I don't know how much my disc shop gets those putters in. Anyone know if the organics seem to be more consistent at all? Or if the SS organic seems to be nice and soft, but not as soft or softer than SSS?

The Organic models have more of a DX feel to them. They're not listed in any softness that I know of, but think beat-in Aviar.
From my experience (I own 15 of them) the Organics are very consistent.

It is important to note that the marketing of our putter variations is not just based on flexibility, but also on surface complexion and surface hardness! Even though we only state four discrete flexibilities in our marketing materials, SSS (Super-Stupid-Soft), SS (SuperSoft), Soft and Medium, we actually produce runs that have a range of up to ten different flexibilities!

Here's a rundown on the differences in putter flexibilities, on a scale of 1 to 10. A 1 is the softest surface and floppiest we make (think SSS), though realistically most SSS we make we shoot for are 2. A SuperSoft is a 4, a Soft is a 7 and a Medium is a 9 which wont really flex that much unless you really apply pressure (50% of the Mediums are probably closer to a 10 for players that just like firm discs).

There are many runs that fall in between these target numbers, like 1,3, 5, 6 and 8. Again - our marketing of Super-Stupid-Soft, SuperSoft, Soft and medium is not only flex, but surface complexion.
Straight from the horse's mouth. Interesting stuff. The rest of it is here.

I know I've read it. That's why I said in my last post that I wish they would use that number rating system on the bottom so maybe you could request discs with that number in SS or something.

Well, you wanna send Dave a petition? That does seem like a good idea although it seems pretty subjective.

If you contact Dave regarding the weights, be prepared to answer these questions, "When was the last time your scale was calibrated?" "How was it calibrated and how do you know the weight of the calibration weight is correct?" and "What's the error of your scale?" I know if someone was going to ask me about an error that small (3g is <2% of the weight) those are the questions I'd ask right away.

Is that because someone was buying discs at the head shop?:p

We have a disc golf pro shop (spinskis) here in G.R with just about anything you could ever want for disc golf, about 10 different types of baskets, clothing apparel, every disc imaginable, if they dont have it they'll get it. But... no bongs or glass blown pipes. Theres a few "head shops" here in town too, they carry a few discs but nothing impressive as far as disc golf has to offer. Im sure the head shop would weigh a disc if you asked, they have the equipment to do that.:D

Ok, I just weighed all the Gateway putters I've got here for sale, and here's what I found out. Six were two grams over marked weight, three were one gram over, eight were marked correctly, three were one gram under, and one was two grams under. These were all ordered at the same time, requested to be in the 174/175 weight range, three are marked 174, eighteen 175. There are six Wizards, five each of VooDoos, Magics, and Warlocks. The plastics breakdown to two SSS, four each of SS, S, Med, and E HPP, and three Organics.

I have not noticed it with the putters at all, I own about 7 Wizards. However, I know that the runs of drivers do change from time to time, Gateway is constantly trying new plastics to improve their products. I live close to the store where they actually make the discs and to get a true read on what each run of disc will do, you have to ask Gateway in person. I know this kind of a negative, but it is usually just a different plastic and does not effect the flight that much. As for the weights? I have no idea, but that's kind of ****ty if the weight is off that much.
