2014 Discraft Ace Race

They've gotta announce this **** here soon!
Either way, I hope the took the bead(and wing bead) off a Z Comet so I can get a DC Flying Squirrel. :D

I just want to know soon. We are the first Ace Race in Minnesota every year and traditionally they release the teaser of what it is after we have to have the course set up and the scorecard/map sent to the printers. Also, most people get interested in it by the teaser just after the deadline Discraft requires our order and payment, so often we are left guessing how many packages to order.

This year seems worse than ever because there has been nothing from Discraft and we are only three weeks away from our tournament. There has been so little interest in it so far. Players in the know seem more excited by the Trilogy Challenge.

Discraft has been pretty consistent about when they release the information about the disc (generally around the time the first packages are shipped). If the late information causes your group that many issues in planning, I am curious as to why your group doesn't move the date of your Ace Race to later in the season when the information has been out.

The date has been set so we can continually claim to be the first Ace Race in Minnesota. The majority of our group is from the Twin Cities, so Becker is not necessarily close for us. When we first hosted this tournament, it was later in the season but we are subjected to the 30 mile rule and our first few choices were eliminated. Becker ended up being the only course even remotely near us that was not off limits.

So we advertise being the first one in Minnesota in hopes of boosting attendance.

How about DC just gets their **** together so the Ace Race can be run when scheduled?! Its THEIR event......

Could your hatred of Discraft make you look like more of a buffoon? This has nothing to do with "getting their **** together". If players now don't want to play until they know what the disc is then maybe trying to be "the first Ace Race" in whatever state is no longer a valuable advertising tool. There are plenty of people who enjoy the Ace Race environment and would play if the disc as a Nuke OOS (or Xtra OS or however you want to phrase it). Many people like me will play the most convenient AR, regardless of whether it's first, last, or in the middle. As you said, it is their event and they can release information whenever they damn well feel like it. Don't let your MVP love/Discraft hate blind you to the fact that Discraft has the most successful, longest running event of this kind. If you enjoy the Birdie Bash, Toolagy Challenge, etc, thank Discraft.
This place is about as far removed as you can be from the everyday world of disc golf.
^^^Aim, just keep repeating this until you get it...
the zombee is a piece of ****. worthless tweener.
Depends on what you carry. I like the way my AR Zombee flies. I may or may not buy another if I lose it, but I'm glad I traded for the one I have. As mentioned it works well in minimalist bags, and as a primary driver on certain short courses. It always seems to find a spot in my bag when I'm playing unfamiliar courses.

Every year Ace Rade TD's are sent a survey to fill out to provide feedback. Every year i write the same 2 things:

1) supply 1 player pack to all TD's when they become available, so the TD's can demo the product and get more people to register.

2) forget prototypes, start cycling existing/popular Discraft discs into the Ace Race. Do you know how many more packs they'd sell if it was a Challenger, Buzz, or Zone? Players would be overly excited.

This is very close to what I wrote in our survey. I simply put asking for information regarding the package earlier, not necessarily the actual package itself. However, I do know that I drummed up a lot of interest for a later in the season tournament when I started passing around my spare packages from our tournament. Having it in hand definitely raised some interest.

I also put exploration of new plastics and not necessarily new discs. Ti was a huge hit last year regardless of what they truly thought of the discs afterward. Many of us were left wondering if it was a newer blend of Ti because it felt a little softer than normal production runs.

lol.. so far from hate its not even funny'

you do know what the date today is... right?

DC offers this to TD's: Free baskets for the top events! The top three events with the most players win a free Chainstar basket from Discraft. See additional details in your TD info pack.

So why not make it as easy as possible for them to gain as much interest as possible?

That's where the Birdie Bash, Gateway and Legacy Challenges have the advantage. They all use existing molds.

When I ran my Birdie Bash, there was an option to get every Vibram disc that was available at the time for 80 bucks. I jumped all over that. I kinda seemed like a shill being parked by hole one at the local course telling people about the BB and letting them try the discs, but it works...we filled up registration in less than a week. We opened more slots and sold that out too. Then I used the discs as additional prizes.

Discraft could benefit from it, but as other have pointed out Ace Race has been a resounding success for many years. Until the participation slows down (Discraft has said it's been growing every year) they aren't too likely to change their process. An unproven idea is a risk. Running things as is provides no risk.

Again, DC is secretive about the new disc, we ALL know that. So if you plan an event on day 1, don't plan on knowing much until late. If you want to be the biggest event ever, plan accordingly. The info page itself says that they don't release disc info until right before first packs ship.

One thing that would be nice is at least a little bit of info spilling out...such as...its a mid/fairway/putter.

Personally, I like the suspense. So many things in our world now are ruined by leaks, previews, etc. that it's kind of fun not to know what I'm getting. But again, I will play regardless of the disc this year.

This for sure. Everyone is surprised. I miss the tragedy in this.

The tragedy occurs when an AceRace is scheduled on the same day as another event one town over. Players will gravitate to the better promoted event and Discraft will lose. :wall:

Nope, doubt it. The people who really want to play an Ace Race type tourney will gravitate towards that over a PDGA sanctioned event, and the players who want a sanctioned event probably aren't playing the Ace Race anyway. There are enough Ace Races that they'll find one that doesn't compete with another tourney. There may be other similar events that might compete, but I really doubt one of those overlaps with an Ace Race frequently enough for Discraft to worry about. Besides, Ace Race is the original. People play those who don't know anything about Birdie Bashes, etc. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.
