Why measure distance in feet?

Anyone know why we use feet to measure distance in disc golf in the US?

I was thinking about the recent SC coverage and wished they would have said 130 yards instead of 390 feet. I think it would put things in perspective for people that don't know anything about the sport. "Wow 130 yards, that's a football field and 3 first downs away" versus "Wow 390 feet, that's a bunch of feet"

Somebody started a thread about getting away from ball golf terms so maybe that's why we stick to feet. If we started using the same measuring standard as ball golf I'm almost certain the universe would implode

Or you could do like the rest of the world and say 119m.

 This gets my vote. If we are going to change the standard DG unit of measurement, it should be to meters (used everywhere), not yards (used pretty much only in football and golf).

Can't people that know nothing about the sport still relate feet to baseball? Like "whoa, 390 feet? that's like a home run"

I think we measure in feet because we have "golf" tied to our sport. So 130yrds doesn't seem far to the person with no knolwledge of our sport. I can hit a ball with my putter in ball golf 130yards . Also measuring in feet ties into our sport better. A huge drive in disc golf is 500ft, sounds better than 166yards.
It would have been better if the sports center guy said "longer than a football field", that would have registered better to the unknowledged public.

If you want a huge number we could say its 15179cm!

The pdga is already metric, the tee signs are all up to the course designer/city parks and rec.

I have two feet that come with me to measure my throws. My yard is pretty stationary.

If we switch to metric, it might be cooler if we measured in decimeters. More apparent precision and bigger rather than smaller values than feet. Nate's ace comes in at 1190 dm. Impressive on Sports Center. Since Americans don't know metric very well anyway, decimeters would be no more confusing than meters and have a cooler ring to it like comparing our "hyzer" versus "hook". You would get up to 3 dm behind your lie, up to 10 dm from OB and the putting circle would go out 100 dm from the pin. Discs are a little more than 2 dm.

For easy reference, 1 dm is about the length of a man's middle finger measured from the metacarpophalangeal joint (first knuckle).

Here in Sweden we measure holes in meters, 1m from ob, 10m circle and 30cm (3dm) line of play. Easy enough. 100m normal drive and 150m bomb :)

Oh metric system, how I love thee (but I'm Canadian afterall).

It would be hilarious if disc weights were measured in units of ounces.

My putters are all 6-1/6 oz.

;)
