[Innova] The Colt

My XTs will last a long time for me because I don't throw them into trees at full speed like others seem to do... :p ;)

Dude, you're doing it all wrong then...I could throw my XT Colt on a football field and it would still find a tree. Love that disc!

Star Colt is pretty nice. Took it out today for a very soggy round and threw it at least once on every hole. Not much to report here, if you already throw the XT or DX. It's a nice premium plastic Colt, period. As mentioned earlier it's moderately stiff and very very slightly domey. Though if you didn't have an XT or DX to compare it to, you'd never call it "domey" at all. The feel in my hand, and the release, is basically the same. My favorite shots with it are hyzer flip short drives and 60-70 foot go-for-it approaches. And since I already putt with an XT colt, I like the idea of putting this into heavy rotation for consistency.

Got my Star Colts today. I had ordered an Orange and a Yellow, both 175g. The orange one looked good; nice bright orange (not red-orange or brownish-orange) like my Star Tern, felt good in the hands. But I was stoked! when the yellow one turned out to be the very bright, almost-glow-in-the-dark chartreuse. And it was standing out in the relative darkness of a cloudy day at sunset as I did some quick range work.

First, the visual inspection: The Star plastic is firm, like my TL Star plastic, definitely more firm than the soft(er) Star plastic of my Roc3s. I compared the Star Colts to my DX protos and DX production Colts. The DX Production Colt was a bit domey relative to the others. The DX protos weren't exactly mcPro-Roc3 FAF flat, and my banging them on trees introduced a bit of warpage.

The Star Colts look a lot more like the proto DX's than the production DX. The sides of the Star Colt are very squared off, almost like a Prodigy PA-4. The Star Colt grip is shallow and very comfortable. The tops are not domey; as I was saying, they look very much like the protos.

Range work: I threw at full power off the tee into a bit of wind. The orange one turned a little bit, landed right of center, but went over 200 ft. (estimated). The chartreuse one went dead-nuts straight and landed soft and flat.

I then made approach shots to the basket (about 100-120 ft.), and these were with a bit of hyzer. Both held the line well, came to within 15 feet of the basket. They flew flat and straight to the basket on the putts.

Then I just threw them around some at different power levels. Being fresh out of the box, they do fade just a bit at the end, but they are very accurate. Maybe once in a while one of them would turn just a bit, but that might have been some wind effects. I then threw two putts about 25-30 ft. out. One went straight to the basket, just right (pro-side) of the pole and settled into the basket. The other looked like it was high and right, but caught the top of the right side chains and dropped straight into the basket with its brother-in-DG-Colt-arms.

On the way back to the car, I took shots at the practice basket. Tried to throw very straight, and both went very straight with only a touch of fade. When I power down, I get just a bit of fade. I'm betting that this time next year that fade won't be quite so much as the Colts beat in.

All-in-all, the Star Colt was everything I was hoping for... not understable, very straight and accurate on upshots/approaches, good for putting as well. Innova not only got this one right, they hit a "grand slam" with the Star Colt(!).

Serious question: what does the Colt do better than any of Innova's other discs?

Serious reply: obviously the Colt is not a Destroyer or Boss. But for the Colt's intended area of functionality, putts and approaches, the Colt is the most accurate disc I have ever thrown. Since it came out, I have gotten metal on throws from long distances out that no other disc has been able to duplicate despite my best efforts. With the Colt, some shots even go in the basket, like one shot I made from 130 ft. and another from 70 ft. Other shots have hit the rim, the basket or the pole with amazing consistency. And if it doesn't hit metal, it's parked "tap in" distance nearby.

Yes, very good players probably can do that with any putter, but for me the Colt is so accurate that I can confidently throw it and actually expect it to hit metal. I cannot say that of any other disc; the Colt flies that straight and true.

These are my results, of course; YMMV. I'll just end with this: When the Colt came out, it made a significant difference in my DG game. It changed my game like no other disc did before or since. That is how good and accurate it has been. Sure I've liked other discs from the start, and other discs have also improved my game, but none had the immediate and enormous impact that the Colt did. I think if you read this thread start-to-finish, you'll get some similar sentiments about the Colt. For me, it's simply been "THAT good".

You want someone to compare this disc to ALL Innova discs?

Why?

I must not have phrased that question right.

.... the Colt flies that straight and true.

For the record, at some point after reading this thread a few weeks ago, I got excited about the Colt and bought one (DX, hot pink) to check it out. So far I've only thrown it in field practice.

Throw flat with no fade no turn.

I think I probably just don't have enough arm yet to use a putter for the distances others are using it for. My go-to is a powered down Buzzz instead. I just got a Nova and Atlas to experiment with also.

I'm not anti-Colt by any stretch. (One of the shortcomings of field work is that it only measures accuracy very broadly.) Thanks for summarizing the pro-Colt opinion for me so I didn't have to read the whole damn thread again : ) Now I'll remember what I'm looking for when I throw it.

I will say that, though I'm not NEARLY as picky about grip/feel as many other people, I much prefer the rim of the Colt vs. a high-profile old school putter.

So did I; it's my only production DX Colt disc. It is more understable than the protos and the Stars. That's all gravy, I can use it for dogleg-right shots.

Some people are using putters for 300 ft. shots, and that's fine for them. Me, I use a putter for a novel thing: putting. The Colt to me is in the transition zone of a putter to a mid. I use it mainly for approaches, though it putts flat and straight inside the circle, too. I use mids (Panther, Roc3, M5) for shots that some of the power-throwers use putters upon.

I will say that, though I'm not NEARLY as picky about grip/feel as many other people, I much prefer the rim of the Colt vs. a high-profile old school putter.

I like the shallow grip of the Colt also. And maybe that's one reason it works so well for me. Please do let us know how the Colt works for you as you work more with it.

Yea, I hate the colt for putting lol.

I throw the colt about 280' on low lines. I am used to throwing putters for drives to this distance. The limitation was that I needed a high ceiling. I especially love throwing Sonics and polecats for 260' and they require an EXTREMELY high ceiling. Colt gives me a true putter line (no turn no fade) without having to throw it high. And as a bonus, if I have ceiling to work with I can pump it out to 300', and downhill it can go forever.

For reference, I am a medium power thrower with zero OAT, like not even a touch. I am a quarter hitter at best but get teebirds out to 400' max due to clean form.

I've had about 20 star Colts in my hands from two different stores and all of them were domey. I've seen on here that they are flat but not the ones I've held in my hands.

It's become my favorite putter because of the shallow rim and in XT plastic, absolutely perfect grip. It just feels effortless on release and as already noted, it's straight as f###. I also like it for any hyzer approach, and it's my go-to if I need to hyzer around a tree at close range, or thumb it vertically through a tight window. I use a star wedge as the US counterpart to the Colt and it's a perfect combo. The wedge gives me short annies and hyzer flips.

^^^ this guy must have really clean form getting a sonic to 260 is a chore even with high ceilings.i absolutely believe zero oat.

Even on extreme hyzer I'm not sure I could pull it off!

I think we should change your name from sonic guy to lid master!

Clean form and a LOT more power than he's leading us to believe...

Well the internet adds 20 feet :p

I don't think of myself as having very good power because the difference between a teebird and a destroyer for me is like 10'. That should not be the case of you are hitting it well.
