[Innova] The Colt

Nova is much deeper and not forgiving on errant throws/bad form.

Basically it will hold the line you put it on, as it's quite stable (0 turn, 0 fade).

Colts have some turn and some fade.

To piggy back on that, how does the Colt compare to the Nova?

The Colt and Nova are not alike at all. The Nova is basically an Aviar with an overmold, and therefore is a deeper dish than the shallow Colt.. It flies dead-straight with correct form.

The Star Colt is (for me) flippy and understable, especially when seasoned in. The proto-Colts were more accurately straight, but production DX Colts, especially domey ones, are understable. XT Colts might not be as understable starting out. But no Colt is going to be mistaken for a Nova, in looks, feel, or flight.

At this point I am pretty well established with my drivers and mid-range discs, but I'm always on the search for different putters. I've bought a bunch of them, some work for me and some don't. Recently I picked up a XT Colt and I am more impressed with this disc every time I throw it. The plastic is firm but with good grip, and it is DURABLE! This disc is gaining my respect.

I bought a couple of these and threw them today, and I like them quite a bit:

They definitely feel just like KC Pro plastic: very stiff and a little slick out of the box. I'm expecting them to hold their stability a lot longer than my proto XT's have. They fly very straight like a fresh XT, a little more stable than the domey GStar I had. They have a small dome, not pancake flat like the XT's, but not bad at all. Overall, I'd say if you like baseline Colts and want something durable, it's worth picking up a couple while they're available.

Are they proto mold or new mold? I can't imagine any production run Colt having proto Colt stability.

the colt seems under rated. it handles wind very well without being overly overstsable.

Is there any baseline disc out there from any company that has a similar shape and that extra-leathery feel of an XD?

Probably new. I should take some side by side profile pics with my protos. Stability is close though, definitely better than the Star or Gstar I had. Maybe a hair less stable than a fresh proto. All but a couple of my protos are used enough now to have lost some stability so hard for me to judge. Maybe I'll break out one of the unthrown protos I was saving and throw them side by side to compare.

That is the problem for me, if you flat top a production Colt or just get lucky it starts about as stable as a proto in the sweet spot. So after three rounds it is significantly understable.

I have no idea why DD decided to mess with the mold. It was one of the few Innova discs I was excited about and he immediately ruined it. I thought the Colt would be the Roc of driving putters. Oh well.

Unfortunately, I don't think we're ever going to see the proto Colt again. Too bad, as Innova took one of the really good discs (proto Colt) and totally, totally f**ked it up with the joke that is the production Colt. :( :( :(

Actually I have a solid spot in the bag for the production Colt. It turns slowly under any power so I can hit a reverse S curve. But it went from workhorse to niche overnight.

I went from loving the proto DX Colt to hating the production DX and Star Colts. I'm glad you're able to work with it, but it's been out of my bag for a while now. My production Star Stud turns over for me, so it's what I use when I need a turnover disc on a dogleg-right hole. The Colt on those holes would turn hard over and crash and burn.

(Apologies if I seem too ambivalent and dispassionate about this. :p )

It really was a special disc. I ended up with a Gateway Chief in the same spot and I'm very happy. But, I wouldn't have tried the Chief if the Colt mold didn't change.

So I got out into a field with a couple Pro Colts and a fresh, unthrown Proto XT Colt. I can now firmly say that the Pro Colts are the new mold. They fly better for me than the Star or GStar I had, but they don't have nearly the stability of a fresh proto. The Pros tended to have a little high speed turn and then lock into a line and hold that line to the ground. The XT proto on the other hand had no turn at all and tended to have a little fade at the end of its flight. Man, it's been so long since I've thrown a fresh one that I forgot how beautifully these protos fly out of the box. Anyway, I don't think the pros are bad discs at all and I honestly prefer them to Star/GStar. Their flight reminds me a little of the prototype Prodigy PA4 back in the day: a little turn and then locked into the line.

Went to the store today, and to my surprise they had a couple of PROTO Colts in XT plastic. :)

My wallet said things I cannot repeat on this family-oriented board  but I bought the XT Proto Colt anyway.

Should be good for a few rounds, and maybe I'll channel my inner Madison Walker and putt with it, too...

Would any of the non-Dx plastics result in a slower Theory?

I too would love an answer to this question.

I'm not very familiar with the Theory, but the Star Colt might be what you (plural) are thinking of in a 'slower Theory'.

Side note: I've been working with the Star Colt on the technical (read: full of trees) course not too far from where I live. Thrown with half-power and for accuracy, the Star Colt is straight-to-slightly-understable, but can get surprising distance due to its glide. MVP/Axiom discs don't have that level of glide for me...
