Ok ok, you're going to say it's not possible to only have one comet. But I've never tried one and have thought about getting one.. Which plastic do I need to try first?

I'd have to agree. Start with the Elite X, and then try the ESP and the Z. I have fallen in love with the Z and will never be without it.

Don't be like me and get a Z and wonder why everyone raves about the mold. Get an X and see how you like it. If you like the Roc/Wasp/Bard type feel you'll be right at home.

I am still learning Comets, but have a little bit of experience with throwing them in Elite Z, Elite X and ESP (a few months now).
The Elite Z plastic feels a little more slippery than other plastics that I throw. Because of this different feel, I have not chosen to throw it as much yet.
I like the feel of the Elite X and ESP discs. Generally, the X discs have more dome than the ESP, which can be rather flat across the top (If there are domey ESPs, I would like to try them). The difference in dome seems to affect the discs stability, where the elite X discs are generally more stable than the ESP. The stability of given discs vary just as one would expect, but so far, my experience is that the elite X are more stable than the ESP, though you will not consider any of them to very stable.

I should say that I have been buying Comets in weights from 170 gms and up, so I have no experience with lighter ones. Also, I live and throw at about 300 ft elevation; your results may vary depending on where you live.

In my sessions throwing Comets in a ball field, I have found the ESP Comets to be pretty flippy, where a smooth, moderate throw released with a fair amount of hyzer will likely result in a flip up to flat followed by a slow turn to the right (on my rhbh throws). Straight throw are possible with the ESPs, but they are rather squirrely.
I have been releasing the Elite X Comets with less hyzer, and expecting that they will flip to flat and ride straight, with some drift possible, and little if any fade at the end.

My ESP Comets are showing almost no wear after the use they have gotten so far. The Elite X Comets get beat up on rocky courses, and I recently used a nail clipper and emery board to clean them up. They may have lost a little bit of stability, but it is not noticeable to me.

For a Comet only round, I would probably choose a Elite X disc, because I find them to be more reliable than the ESPs. But, sometimes I choose to go with just one very unusual disc for a one disc round, just for kicks, and because it forces me to work with it much more than is necessary with some more sensible disc.

I now also own some Big Z and Ledgestone TI Comets, and will throw them some time in the future. I believe that Michael Johansen throws the TIs, so they must be pretty good.

Can't go wrong with any weight in X.

After this, I'd go MJ Tour Series for an X flight that wears slower.

If more stable is your bread & butter for a one-disc option, Ti.

Ditto!!!

I bought a 165g Z Comet and was never able to throw it very well...the Z plastic, to me, was very slippery and I had problems with the disc flying out of my hand before I intended. I was about to give up on the Comet and move on to something else but kept hearing how amazing this disc was. So I ordered a 169g X Comet and absolutely love it!!!

Probably getting ready to order an ESP Comet soon because the Comet has become the most valuable disc in my bag.

Although many people love the Z Comet I say go with the X to start with...absolutely love mine!!!

Is there an MJ in the X plastic? At one online retailer I only see the Tour Series (MJ) in the Z line plastic. Thanks!

Right now Elite X over 170 grams are almost the same as orginal ones back in 90's. Z ones if you want little more stable flight. Ron Russell Z Comets are money ;o)

There is not an MJ in X plastic, only elite Z. That's what I have and really like it. It's a little more pearly and has better grip than other Z's I've thrown. I haven't thrown a comet in X or ESP, but you all are making me think I should.

"JUST ONE COMET"

Such an awesome name for the thread. I really like your effort.

Hale Bopp. Bag one and it'll be the last comet you'll ever think about...it was for these people.

Haha the crowd is probably right about the X plastic... my personal preference would be a Z glow with a nice flat top, I'm not big on the domey ones myself. My results have been thus relative within the mold:

X... Straightest, with low HSS bit of fade, beats in fastest

ESP... a little "S" flight, lowest HSS, but more fade

Z... Straight but most HSS so it's hardest to turn over, my Z are flat or loved so less fade then domey ESP

Get one in whatever weight you typically like your Mid but I would avoid going over 174g
They are all good, but Z plastic is probably not the best thing to try in the winter... there are some amazing ESP blends that are firm but grippy if you play in a rockpile like me that would be the only reason to avoid an X

I prefer X for anhyzers, lower power shots, and shots where I want zero fade.

I prefer Big Z for shots where I have more room to work with so feel comfortable putting more power into it, and when a touch of fade is ok.

But it feels like there is a lot of overlap.

Yeah just learn towards X, they are cheaper, fly great, and don't beat up quick at all unless you play rocky courses. Grassy/trees they will last.

Comet is nothing to be afraid of other than the terrible hand feel. But they are worth it, and you learn to ignore it if it's not your thing initially. If you can throw a putter hard and straight, the Comet will do the same but farther.
