Was just using the course browser and noticed that are now over 6000 courses in the directory, and if you click the temp button it goes up to 6162. I wonder how many will be there next year?...:thmbup:

Anybody know how many courses have been put in in recent years? I want to say the directory had 5000 not all that long ago...

lolol. I made a big loop around central mn that I had planned for a few years. I looked the other day and now an 18 holer popped up just north of the loop. Aww crap, looks like Ill have to make another road trip

Sounds like a contest! I guess 10,285. (after2018)

^^^haha, yeah

just 1000 new courses in a year would be a historical increase. 4k+ is fantasy stuff! (no offense, thrembo)

So with 6000+ courses, anything rated between #1 - #60 is in the top 1%. So stop getting all worked up over one bad rating.

10,285 is my PDGA # lol. Yeah, could be a couple of years before we hit 10K.

A few weeks ago I looked up the course count on here(in 2008) to respond to a different thread and there were about 2700 that year. Don't know if that included European courses or not, but I'm guessing there weren't many over there yet. So, pushing 5000 new courses in less then 10 years, not counting un-listeds or temps.

That's accurate Jeff, in 2007/2008 it was in the mid-2000s. I can do a search of one courses were actually added to the site vs. what their install date shows. Might be a better metric.

Also, on a sad note, I don't know how many courses have gone extinct (never to be seen again) in the last 10 years, but i'm sure it's hundreds.

There are 714 extinct courses in the database. I haven't done the query for courses added each year, I will take a look tomorrow. The downward trend may just be that people aren't entering an install year so those courses aren't showing up.

I don't necessarily think that's sad. More courses going extinct is just a logical after effect of more courses being built.

I would imagine some of those courses, whether thru bad design or parks making additions that make the courses safety hazards, probably deserved to be closed...

I can think of a few that should be...

It's not really a downward trend in the number of new courses. The number of courses is still going up, but the increase is slowing down. The downward changes may not be statistically significant...hard to tell without looking at more data. I think it's hard to keep up large growth rates in any endeavor year after year. You end up using up most of the "low hanging fruit" opportunities. Personally I'd rather see our sport grow slowly but surely. Growing too fast causes it's own set of problems.
