Pdga has finally announced new rules on transgender competition

I took the survey but have no recollection either way on whether I signed an IRB consent form.

Menickelli teaches at Western Carolina U. so I am fairly sure the survey was done under their watch.

Also fairly sure the process was a sham.

I've got a 6 week break beginning very soon and I'm happy to spend the whole thing looking into if this was a conflict of interests or academic misconduct.

Interesting that they published the results on political orientation but not the 75% of the survey that was full of other minutiae about one's support of military intervention or what to do when your kids mouth off.

I'm curious too. Suspicious maybe. The other questions were psychological profile anecdotes to determine if they believed your answer to the questions that mattered to whoever did the study. These are the kind of profile questions asked in (online) job interviews to justify (undermine?) your clear answers to clear questions.

They are trying to pass off an ideologically-biased instrument as "objective" because, "well, it was reviewed."

"The survey was reviewed by a university Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure adequate provisions to protect the privacy of participants and to maintain confidentiality of the data."

If anyone reads this and infers that the PDGA is claiming IRB reviewed the survey's objectivity as opposed to just reviewing privacy and confidentiality safeguards...they would be wrong.

I think the PDGA gave the survey more weight than it deserved

71% of the medical committee opposed transgender participation in FPO compared to 67% of survey respondents. The survey was on average more supporting of inclusivity than the Medical subcommittee research.

You may be frustrated that women often negotiate conflict through anonymity and cliques, rigorously policing in group/out group status behind a veil of politeness, but once one spends more time with women or raises a daughter through middle school, it will at least no longer surprise you.

gy·no·pho·bi·a
[ˌɡīnəˈfōbēə]
NOUN
dislike or fear of women.

I'm not claiming that such behavior is wrong or even ill-advised. In general people tend to act as they see fit and I would not disagree with them. I'm just noting that the behavior OP describes is not exceptional.

I'm not claiming they are faking factual claim. I am arguing they are rhetorical constructing an argument about objectivity.

I'm still trying to figure out what words I am looking for specifically to accurately share my thoughts, and this may be a hot take, but I think its complete nonsense that a survey like the one they sent had any weight in a decision like this. It didn't even collect names and pdga numbers, so how do we know a person taking that survey was accurately representing themselves? We're giving weight to a survey where a person may have just put that they were against trans women playing in FPO because they don't believe trans people should exist, regardless of scientific findings or other factors?

Not to mention the fact that the pdga is now effectively requiring trans women to start physical transitioning at a young age during a time where several states and political leaders are considering anti-trans bills and laws?

This is going to do more harm than good, and effectively keeps trans women athletes from making any sort of living out of playing the sport. Just add it to the list of things telling trans folks we don't want them to be a part of society. It's a complex issue that deserves a better answer than this, and a better answer than give them their own division or have them play MPO.

This conversation is long on speculation about the survey and short on discussion of policy, which is pretty well fleshed out in the PDGA statement.

Transwomen can compete if they meet certain criteria. Full stop.

Are those criteria fair? Are they enforceable? That might actually be an interesting discussion; I hope someone with a clue can weigh in.

I think the PDGA gave the survey more weight than I thought they would. They are currently in damage control.

What's right is right.

I thought they would keep the results to themselves while quietly going along with whatever the survey revealed.

But I guess if they just went with the even more exclusive recommendation of the Medical Committee they would have been accused of going against their membership base. Publicizing the survey allows them to cover that base too.

Smart move by them. The pendulum is swinging hard the other way in so many facets. Look at the blowback Fauci and the FTX clowns are finally getting. Love it!

Ultiworld article draws the natural comparison to recent FINA guidelines: https://discgolf.ultiworld.com/2022...ompetition-at-fpo-majors-elite-series-events/ while contrasting the PDGA's new policy with Ultimate's "maximally inclusive" rules.

Beyond Ultimate and Esports, what sports have transgender women succeeding as superlatively as Lia Thomas and Natalie Ryan? Are we seeing a distinction between individual and team sports as to how they handle this issue?

World Athletics who governs track and field announced at their 11/30 meeting they will release new guidelines in March. Their president asserts that FINA has spent over $1 million in legal fees as a result of their new policy and the financial cost is a concern for them.
