DFW disc golf

Gateway was a lot of fun on Saturday morning. Very few disc golfers for such a shaded course. It looks great and is VERY playable.

What do y'all think about the Lewisville Open being trophy only for ALL Amateur divisions? I have a feeling DD is gonna lose a lot of players because of this...

I sure hope not. I know they are trying some things to see how they work and hear the response from players. I was one who was asked about this possibility earlier this year, I believe back in Feb/March. And I am guessing that they put it forward seeing as Lewisville was their last big two-day that they have experience with (Piney Woods is first-time for them).

They are also trying some other formats as well. They went to three courses all three times in Cedar Hill this year, with the Texas Amateur and this weekend's CH Open being three rounds plus final 9 for all divisions. I think we need to support DD, play the tournament, then provide constructive feedback on how it worked after the tournament (not b…ching, whining, or complaining). I think they will take all well-thought out input. Ultimately they are looking toward long-term sustainability of their events and building them even bigger. I believe their intent is to have a bigger prize pack and give more trophy discs/minis down the line -- not sure exactly, but we'll see. I've signed up. Who knows? Maybe instead of losing players, more will play Open and deepen the field that gets cash??? Let's see what happens, and then I'll comment to them on how I liked it.

I know that a lot of Advanced players got "saturated" with plastic, and later with apparel, so they are just trying it and seeing about the feedback.

So overall, my opinion is I'm still playing; I'll reserve judgment until after the tournament.

Well I now live 5 hours away from DFW. I really wanted to play this, had a blast last year. But I don't think I want to fork over travel and entry money for only the possibility of a trophy. I'm pretty disappointed and I'm a HUGE DD fan.

I would suggest anyone who has concerns about Lewisville Old Man Memorial being "trophy only" contact Dynamic Discs in Kansas. As I understand it, there will still be some payout merch, just not as deep down the line, maybe only the top few -- so those winners will get a bigger payout than before. What they are trying to do is give more Ams a chance at "stuff" with a whole bunch of CTPs and other prizes on every Am card during every round. I think they want everyone to play, see how it works, then they'll get the feedback from the competitors. If it turns out a lot of people don't like it, maybe they'll go back in future tournaments to the old way (I don't know), but they wanted to try this format for one time and see how it works. Yes, it's different, but I am willing to try. After all they can't really try something new "in theory."

They run some of the best tournaments around, so I'll be there.

Hi all - I'm heading down from Love Field to Waco on Wednesday, and I was looking at stopping somewhere in the Duncanville/Cedar Hill area for a round or two. Any suggestions regarding Crossroads of Life vs. Coyote or Beaver at Lorch?

Play Cedar Hill's three courses. Mt lebanon, which I'm not even sure is open to the public all the time, doesn't have tee boxes yet but is a challenging and unique course.

All 3 courses are next to eachother, 2 of them on the same driveway so I think you will get more disc golf out of those. Plus people like them more than the Duncanville course.

If you have time for two rounds, I'd suggest playing one round at Crossroads and one at Coyote. Crossroads has a mix of long holes - technical holes, right turns-left turns-must throw straight, & traditional par 3s - true par 4/5s; more variety than either of the other two.

Coyote, though shorter, to me is the more challenging of the two courses at Cedar Hill Lorch, because you look at it thinking you should score 48 every time -- but you don't (at least I don't) because the woods are punishing and force you to stay on the fairways while you go for birdies.

Mt. Lebanon is a private course so it's only open to the public for sanctioned tournaments & minis -- not during the week when it's exclusively for the camp goers. But you can't go wrong with any of them -- Beaver, Coyote & Crossroads are all great courses. Whatever you choose have fun and get all three if you're up to it.

Crossroads hands down.

I'd play Beaver. Good fun course. If you find yourself at 16's basket with plenty of time (and water) you can head over to Coyote and play that course before finishing up 17 & 18 on the Beaver.

Crossroads is junky golf on the first few holes and that can set the pace for the rest. Scores can range from a 1 to a 6 on any one of those holes. To hard to be fun if you are just stopping by to get a round in. (I will say it is a good course for local guys to go test what they are made of on.)

It is super hot out right now, make sure you bring lots of water and hydrate up before you play.

The Beaver and Coyote courses are much more shaded than the Crossroads course, and the XRds course has a 600 ft walk between 18 basket and 1 tee, mostly over pavement.

Here is what DD said (over in the tournaments threads):

I am going to keep this pretty short but want to get this addressed. We are always trying to improve the DD events and want them to be the best that they can be. We moved to player pack only in the recreational division a couple years ago and the response was very positive. After hosting a couple events that featured a "Win your card-Win a prize" we received positive reviews from the players. It often seemed more exciting for the players to be battling each round for that prize. It gives everyone a chance, at every round to win something.

To sum this up, we want to give this a try and see what the response is. We don't plan on making this the norm for the DD events.

-Each amateur player will receive a bonus players package
-Top finishers will receive additional payout. For example, 1-3 in MA1 and MA2 will still be receiving $100+ in merch.
-Four rounds of win your card-win a prize
-CTP's
-Ring of Fire
-Lunch provided on Saturday by Genghis Grill
-Player Party Saturday @ Dynamic Discs Lewisville with food and beverage provided
-No waiting around for an hour after the tournament to collect merchandise!

We think the positives outweigh the negatives in this format. Actually, we couldn't really even find many negatives. Everyone seems to win in this situation. This should provide for a more positive tournament experience. The top players still get rewarded as well!

I like it! I hope everyone else does as well. Plus it eliminates talk that they were "just sending more Am money to the pros" -- that's not it at all.

Alright I have a question for you DFW-westsiders

I've never played a tournament before, and I'm pretty terrible. But I'd like to try out a mini. Do any of the minis in the Fort Worth-Arlington area have divisions, or are they all open?

from the East side.
Most minis (everwhere) have Am & Open. (other than doubles minis).
Play the one on the course you play the most so you meet the people that play that course.

This is the best way to get better also, IMO. You get to see what is possible and pick peoples brains on how to do things giving you somehting to work on in the field or on the course

I have only played the one at north park once and it was mixed doubles. I'm an ok player at best but got lucky and got teamed up with a very good played so I learned a lot.
