How I generally do Course Reviews: I like courses with variety of challenges. I'm a simple man, really. I like courses to have 3 main things. Trees, elevation, and water. If a course has all three, usually I'll give it a good review. Some great courses only have two out of three, usually just trees and elevation, (though in Houston usually elevation is the part lacking) but they are designed very cleverly, which makes up for one missing piece.

I like playing holes that are unusual and fun. Not an open, flat field with scattered trees, like many courses are. If I play a hole, and want to describe it in my review later so others will want to play it too, thats probably a good hole. If the course rewards good shots, and offers risk-reward then those are also pluses.Even if the hole is fairly standard, throwing in an interesting twist makes me want to come back and play it again. Examples include: Pin on the edge of a cliff or on top of a boulder. Island greens. Terraced greens. Tunnel shots. Blind shots. A Lake or river in play. A hill or valley in play. OB sidewalks/roads. An unusual shaped line.
All these things, if used well, can make a hole noteworthy, instead of just another hole. Admittedly, few courses could include all of these things, due to limitations of the land they are built on, but making use of what's there for a fun and challenging experience is really what matters. Admittedly, not all courses are created equal. Some are built on land that really isn't all that interesting. Not every course can be, or needs to be a championship course. Some of my favorite courses to play are ones I might have only rated a 3.5, and some of the most challenging courses I've played are ones I might have rated less than a 3. If its fun and interesting, with variety, then it probably got a good mark.

The thing that separates good from great, in my book, is the wow factor. Was this course stunningly beautiful, with a variety of challenges and memorable holes? Usually this means challenging, yet fair. Its a hard balance to achieve, and I have utmost respect for the course designers that are able to reach this pinnacle.

Some things that count against courses in reviews:
One thing I don't like is repetitive holes. Some courses have many holes that are essentially the same. This isn't very creative, and gets pretty boring for me as a player. Also, some courses manage to be challenging without being fun. If there is only one way to play every hole, and the course does not force a variety of shots, then it probably got marked down for it. For example, if a course can be played easily with just RHBH, without any extreme annys or other shots, then its probably not challenging enough. at the same time, if you can just go over the top on every hole with a spike hyzer or a tomahawk, that takes alot of the strategy out of the game as well.

Admittedly I'm biased towards courses in the woods, because areas with only scattered trees are usually too forgiving, in my opinion. Also, I like courses that are technical enough that distance isn't the single most important factor. Most DGers I meet don't throw over 325, so how does a course test skill if its just long open holes that you just need a lot of distance to par. That, IMO is boring, and takes a lot of the strategy and decisions out of the game.

I think maintenance is probably not as important to me as some. I like concrete tee pads, but dont really care that much as long as the tees are flat and level. As long as I know where to go, its not a big issue for me how FTF a course is. Some of the courses I've ranked highest are very un-FTF, but I liked playing them so much that this wasn't really an issue to me. However, a really run-down course might otherwise be great with a little TLC.

Conversely, I feel like some courses are overgroomed. Their fairways are too wide and the holes lose some of their challenge. Some courses that are among the most well-maintained get marked off for making it too easy. Its another delicate balance.

What I've started to realize, after looking for a common theme in the courses I gave 4.5 or 5s to, is that a course doesn't need all three main elements (Trees, Elevation, Water/OB, generally in that order of importance) to be one of the best. If it has an abundance of one of the three, or lots of 2 of them and creatively plays to its strengths, for a unique and challenging experience, it can more than make up for lacking in one element. Here are some good examples of how to make up for a lack of one thing:

Fountain Hills Park, AZ- Open with few trees. Water everywhere and moderate elevation.
Blue Ribbon Pines, MN- almost no elevation, but tons of huge trees and several ponds in play.
Justin Trails Big Brother, WI- No water, but tons of crazy elevation and 2 generous scoops of trees.
Lambs Creek, WI- Crazy amounts of all three.

    So, to recap,
3 MAIN Elements of Potentially Good Courses
    Trees
    Elevation
Water/paths/other misc OB (tho water is usually best)

    Other SECONDARY, Complimentary Details
    Risk Reward Opportunities
    Baskets-hillside/elevated/protected?
    Hole Variety-different curves, diff lines
    Length Variety-some long, some short
    Fun!!
    Tee Pads/Signs/Benches/Mowing/Course Flow/Maps
    Thickness of Shule
    Width of Fairways/tunnel shots
IT Factor- signature & unusual holes, scenic views, etc

Well, hope that all makes sense, and maybe answers some questions about why I review the way I do.

when does the north western wisconsin trip with the english fellows begin; keep me informed as my main buddy may be interested in joining you at least for tower ridge and possibly more
I tried sending you four messages; they're showing up on my end; but, I don't know if you're getting them
you up on facebook? if so, does it go through your work? that would be a good way to keep up on each others doings...
We played blue tees; there is a set of golds we didn't notice; guess they're hard to find. +5 and +6 two best scores from three pretty decent players; from middle tees.
I had been there twice before, but first time it was raining cats and dogs and then hailing!!!...so, I didn't remember much about it other than that. New nine a wonderful/technical addition through the woods.
I must not have the necessary unique voters because I have been over 300 for 24 hours or more and I am still silver.

Well I also got all the distances listed for Vallarta Ast since they were not on the site yet.

I hope I can make it tomorrow . . . I o not want to miss out on any more weeks since I already had to skip 2 weeks. I would like to see how I finish in this division. If I win I will move up if I decide to play the next session (right now I think I will skip the Tuesday at Dretzka after session 1 and just stick to Valley View).

No offense to you I just seem to enjoy the guys at Valley View more. The guys at Dretzka all seem to be potheads and already in their own little cliques. I fit right in with the people at Valley View nd my wife has decided to join me on Wednesdays also at VV league. She wouldnt make it at Dretzka!!!
I just finished reviewing Vallarta Ast Hiestand and Elver. I left here about 5:30 sunday morning to get out there and play all the courses before I had to be at my parents for Fathers Day. I played both tees at hiestand and vallarta but only the shorts at Elver. Elver and Hiestand are better designs and better properties, but nothing can beat the facilities and maintenance at Vallarta. Just thought I would let you knwo I finally made it to Madison!

Now it looks like heading through Ripon and Beaver Dam will net me 5 more courses . . . plus I am headed to Wausau this weekend to visit my wife side of the family and I am hoping to hit Yulga and Standing Rocks up there.
suup buddy! im sorry im so crap at gettign back to you about everything. I have some work in progress that may or may not reak havoc with my plans so im keeping mum for the moment. In another not, not to make you jealous or anything i might be playing the world famous DeLaVeaga course tomorrow or friday...... ill let you know. I traveling for buisness so im gonna have to domintate the course with just my (Surge, only bringingng it to see if i can get someone famous to sign it), teebird, buzz and soft banger....... Ill keep you posted! Increase the peace homo!
So was I mistaken that you were in Milwaukee all of this past week? I called about playing Brown Deer or maybe Valley View or Village Park in Sussex and didnt hear back from you.

I play wednesday at valley view for league at 6 PM, practice round hopefully too by about 4:15 PM.

I might have another chance another day next week but it will have to be Tuesday if at all. Let me know your schedule, but I would be happy to hit up the regular Dretzka course on tuesday afternoon assuming it does open on Monday the 11th. Let me know and we can schedule ti so that it does happen!

P.S. Sheboygan is next in about 4 1/2 hours I will be leaving for it. I hope to hit 5 courses out of the 7 within 15 miles of Sheboygan!
Are you playing this weekend at all? I might be able to make Saturday work somewhere. Let me know your schedule maybe I could head out your way to some of the great Madison courses.
Hey your inbox was full so I couldnt send my last message.

I am in, like I said I will work my way towards Watertown to try and be there by 10 to play a round with your group of guys.

It might not be the nicest day but it might be the nicest day we have for a week so I figured I better get out there. I will most likely just play rock river with you guys and part ways because to hit up those other courses might be too much for me. I will have to try and get to whitewater another time it sounds like it is decent. Beaver Dam (although it looks cool) might be another tough one to get to since it isnt on a direct route for me for any travel.
There's this guy...Jason. I met him firsttime at this summers Mad City Open. I went out to watch some pros play on Sunday morning and decided to follow a group of lower level players...it seemed more realistic than following Barry Schultz. Jason was 1 of the 4. He was wond pretty tight and mentioned more than once....for no apparent reason, that he had been beat up the night before.

I bumped into him at Hiestand later this summer. I was near the basket at 8 and I saw his tee shot come off the pro tee at 10. Pretty awesome shot, pin high 60 feet left of the basket. I waited to speak to him...give him a "nice shot" hello and such. We talked for awhile and he took the time to give me a pointer on pulling thru a throw and snapping the hit like you'd snap a towel. Kinda interesting.

Then he mentioned that he got beat up the night before.

    He's an okay guy...but he's a suffering man.

Oh, he shot plus 2 from the pros at Token during the Tournament.
Sorry to hear about the sprain...that sucks. Man o man. Hiestand is so icy. The basket at 14 is just dangerous to be around. The left side of the hill on 17 is wicked. I don't even play 4 and 5, but just skip to 6. Its wierd that you report an injury...I came up with turf toe after 2 rounds on Thursday. It seems that because of the ice, I was using my toes going up hill to get more weight ( pressure) as I moved uphill. I never fell, but I overstretched a ligamnent across my big toe. I didn't notice any problem on the course, then took my dog to the dog park at Warner...which is very icy too. Friday morning...lol...I could hardly walk. Sheesh. I'm getting old. The toe feels better after a couple of days and I'm going use this cold snap thats coming to rest it somemore.
Rest up and we will hook up when we both can walk safely again.

    Peace
